Alma C. understates the facts. Davis Dairy seems to be the only decent kosher deli in New England. I am a corned beef aficionado and have had to go to New York from Cape Cod to get anything resembling a good New York-style corned beef. No more. Davis Dairy has a superb corned beef. Really! It compares favorably with what I might typically get in NY. I can’t tell you how thrilled I was to find them! It’s an hour’s drive, but worth it. On the negative side, their selection seems narrow and they have very little in the way of in-house prepared foods. But just to see Halvah and Jelly Rings available on the counter makes me feel at home.

This is a great place to go for chopped liver, chocolate or cinnamon babka, pickled tomatoes, potato knishes, bagels, lox, cream cheese, etc. If you’ve never had chopped liver, this is a really good place to try it. This is a hidden gem in Providence, definitely try it out!

Davis Dairy is the only kosher food specialist deli market in Providence. I repeat. Davis Dairy is the only kosher food specialist deli market in Providence. It’s a small family owned retail market that serves the local Jewish community and has wholesale accounts too. I personally like the no BS service, the sliced meat, smoked fish, nova lox and especially the super smooth deli cream cheese which you can buy by a ¼ pound. I don’t cook Jewish/kosher food often, but when I have a hankering and need some essential ingredient, odds are Davis Dairy has it. Cash only.

One can fly to Alaska and fish the rivers for Salmon and smoke it on the spot and still not get better lox than Davis’s Dairy. It goes great on Pizza too :).

When I was a little girl, this wonderful shop was called Davis’ Deli, but now it is called Davis Dairy — not sure why the switch. It happens to be the SOLE survivor of Jewish delis(that I am aware of) left in RI, which is quite sad. The owner, Joss, has been working there since he was a child, literally, and he knows everyone who comes in the door, and their cousins and uncles too. This is one of the wonderful things about the place. They don’t take credit cards, and I think, but am not certain, that they won’t even take a check if they don’t know you. I remind Joss who my father was, and he says his name out loud, saying what a wonderful man my father was, and how good he was to Joss when he was a boy.(My father was a bus driver and he used to give Joss tokens or transfers for the bus to get to school. Since my father passed away a long time ago, and the bus company has changed hands, I feel that the statute of limitations has run out on this one!) So, Joss takes MY checks! :-) Davis sells wonderful lox, smoked white fish, white fish salad, pickled herring, and dozens of other delicious products; and they have cold cuts in the back(they keep them separate because observant Jews do not mix dairy products with meat products. They also usually have halvah, a middle eastern, ground nut based candy that is delightful, fresh for the slicing. They sell it wrapped in small packages also. YUM. I love this place. If I lived on the East Side I’d be there a lot more often. As it is, it is my go to place for white fish and smoked salmon if I’m having company. There is something very special about Davis’, not the least being that the owner knew my father and my entire family — both sides! And it is such an old fashioned little store that could just as easily be sitting on a street corner in Manhattan as on Providence’s East Side. They do a fabulous business and are always crowded. The service is friendly, the food is old-time deli fabulous, and there is a parking lot on the side of the building, for your convenience.

This is an old fashion mom and pop type store, which is good because of the more personal relationship. They have a nice range of kosher products(cholov yisroel cheeses, glatt kosher meats and chicken, products from israel and ny), and PRE-PACKAGED meat with a reliable hashgocha.(I say this because of the fact that there unpackaged meat is currently not supervised) Their prices are really great, and I was satisfied with the products I purchased. The only downside was that they do not accept credit cards. I will return again!(next time, with cash)

Slam dunk Jewish grocery. Cheap nova salmon and great kosher meats. Friendly owner. The store is picked clean during holidays, so plan ahead! Strange, small parking lot off Hope street.

It was at Davis’s and the late Miller’s(of blessed memory) that I discovered from an early age that there really were foods as good as Chinese in this world we live! Davis’s is a must stop for deli lovers and for me when I visit RI. Davis’s features very good kosher meats and if Josh, the owner, hand slices your Nova, it will be as thin as can be… something that is becoming a lost art. They also carry babka(yes Jerry and Elaine, they carry both chocolate and cinnamon), frozen gefilte fish and potato pancakes, whitefish salad, herring, cream cheese, bagels, challah, blah, blah, blah… yata yata, yata… Although they carry many great items, they sometimes do run out of things and they are not shy about hurrying you up if they are crowded. I believe the store is open Monday through Saturday, does a huge wholesale business, and has been top dog for Jewish foods in RI for many years! So if it is Jewish deli you crave, stop by Davis’s and try the the real thing!
