Stopped in to pick up a cake the day I needed it and everything about this place is awesome! The customer service was spot on, there were a variety of cakes to choose from and the atmosphere is fun! I went with a chocolate ganache mouse cake and it was fabulous! My friend and I loved it, it was so delicious and rich! Over all this was a great experience!

The tomato bisque was fantastic as were the popovers; however the $ 8.50 mimosas were an absolute joke. #1 if you serve a mimosa in a champagne glass you’re an a$@hole. #2 mimosas should be 90% bubbly and 10% Oj… not the other way around. #3 If you’re going to rip me off at least serve your mimosa’s in a wine glass so the brutal ass raping doesn’t hurt so bad.

I love Popovers. The food is always fresh, and both inside and out make for wonderful people watching. Coffee is Rao’s, and the desserts remain the best part of the meal

A bit overrated honestly. My breakfast was yummy and my coffee good but just not as crazy amazing at it seems it should have been by what was said on here. The popovers were yummy, but not as blown away as I thought I was going to be.

A nice lunch spot. Stopped by for late lunch on a chilly Saturday afternoon. The place was packed! The line for ordering moved quickly. I got the«pick 2»: ½ caprese panini and bowl of clam chowder. Finding seats for two people was a bit of a challenge, but turnover was fast enough that we found a table before our food was ready. You get a buzzer to let you know when the food is ready to be picked-up at the counter. The soup was hot and delicious! Thick(but not too thick) and creamy with lots of clams. Great flavor. Exactly the clam chowder I was hoping for on a cold, gloomy day. The panini was very tasty. Perfectly grilled and filled with lots of fresh tomatoes. They give you an adorable mini popover with your meal. So light and fluffy. It can definitely stand on its own, but I would«splurge» the extra $ 0.25(or however much it is) for the maple butter.

YASSS must try if you stop in Portsmouth! popovers so fresh and HOT when you get them, airy, eggy, crusty ALLINONE —popover with maple butter: so simple but great with butter and strawberry jam —popover with eggs and American cheese: served with a small bowl of fruit, there is A HEFTY portion of egg in the middle but the cheese really brought it together Order at the front then get your items and find a seat! NOTE: they also do sandwiches, bagels, baked goods, Etc Not just popovers! Although why wouldn’t you get one?!

Update: Now I know why food critics try a restaurant up to 3 times before reviewing. We went to Popovers on the Square 3 times in 6 days and the thing I complained about the first time of the popover top being only one crusty layer was not the case the following 2 times so looks like that first was a one off.

What a wonderful little place! Wide variety of sandwiches, soups, salads, and other lunch items. They have homemade sangria and beer on tap as well. Our party of 4 utilized the mix & match menu(½ sandwich and side salad or soup) and we were all very satisfied. Reasonable prices and very friendly service. Highly recommend!

It’s a fast, casual breakfast and pastry service that does the job. The popovers are nice and I’m impressed with the scrambled eggs in popover as an idea and this was the one time when I’m surprised by how the American cheese addition on the egg is not as bad as I thought. The taste reminds me of eating a Kraft’s Mac n cheese. We were rolling through Portsmouth from MA in the early morning hours and Popovers on the square was there to address our morning hunger. The fruit that comes on the side of the scrambled in popover is a bit old tasting. I assume they’ve been sitting around before being dished out.

I came with hesitation, but now I am a fan! Just tasted my daughter’s generous bowl of the best clam chowda ever! I had the slightly spice, as I like it, chipotle ham and pork panini with tomato bisque soup. Great stuff. Cool popover which was sad. Hence not five stars.

The cheese and egg stuffed popovers a great breakfast pick; comes with a side of fruit salad, all for less than $ 10. Outdoor café-style seating is great for people watching on Congress Street.

I am sorry to say I don’t have glowing review on this one. I had taking a course on «chocolate baking» with the chef and was anxious to try the place. So, I stopped one morning and order some fabulous looking pastries to go down to MA for a family get together. Unfortunately, a few were rather stale. I «assume» this may have been a one time thing, so I don’t want to complain too much. And I never stopped back to complain. But I have never returned either. Just my two cents …

The popovers were yummy but a bit cold. Underwhelmed by the pear salad: canned cinnamony pears with wilted iceberg lettuce and old carrots. They could really upgrade their menu and add fresher, healthier options. I love popovers but feel this was only giving it 70%.

After seeing Popovers on our past 2 visits, we decided to eat there for Mother’s Day. I was surprised when I called and was told their wait time rarely exceeds 15 minutes. But we were seated on the patio after maybe 5 minutes. We waited for our server to take our order, only to be told it was self-serve. That explains the wait times! Would have been nice if we’d been told that right away. Otherwise, we had a great meal. I got the pear & Gorgonzola salad with chicken and my husband got the Caesar salad with chicken. We got the grilled cheese for our son(which did not come with the mini popover the cashier said it did), and which we both LOVED. Our salads were large and tasty, although the chicken was a bit hard. The popovers were, of course, fantastic. It was somewhat expensive, but we had a great time and really enjoyed our food and the ambience.

Popovers and maple butter made for the perfect breakfast/road trip snack on our way up to Portland from Boston. Popovers were warm and fluffy and the maple butter really brought it home for me. If you’re on your way up to Portland like we were and want a quick snack that’s not McDonalds, definitely stop by this cute town and it’s even better café on your way up!

Popovers on the Square feels like a generic Panera Bread to me. The space seems big, cold, and designed for high customer volume. It makes for a great spot for old friends to catch up, and probably makes for a perfect location to do work from should your WiFi kick out at your house… but when I come here, it’s to take away coffee. Specifically the Red Eye. Crazy as it seems, some places in the world don’t actually know what a Red Eye is, so I asked the girl at the counter if I could have a cup of coffee with a shot of espresso and soy. She smiled and said, «So we have this drink called a Red Eye, and…» I lit up and animatedly told her that was EXACTLY what I wanted, but I didn’t know if they knew what it was(only it sounded more like one big squeal, because I was so excited). She explained that the way they do it there is to pull the shot into a cup, hand it to us, and let us fill it with however much coffee we want from the coffee bar across from the counter. Within minutes I had a mug with some espresso(two shots, because I like to test the limits of my heart). I turned around and pumped some coffee into it, and as I was about to mention something about the lack of soy I had requested, I realized they actually had carafes of various«dairy» products — from milk and half & half, to soy and almond — sitting on the bar for customers to help themselves to. Um… genius. It truly is as accommodating and self-serve as you can get… and I LOVE that about this place. Just love it. They have instantly become my go-to for coffee in the area because of this. Finally, I’ve only ever tried the pastries… I would suggest avoiding anything with peanut butter(it always tastes grainy to me), but going out of your way for an éclair. Only, you’ll probably need to order two(because you’re going to inhale that first one so fast you won’t know where it actually went… then again, this might just be the espresso talking!).

Uh, no waitress and maitre die had s hard time explaining how they take reservations yet have a sign that says«seat yourself» front and center upon arrival. Unfortunately for us this added up to spotty service from start and despite us letting it go it just kept coming back to haunt. Plastic cups, fruit that was diner-like, a self serve bakery counter and ordering station, as well as a high volume of tourists made this spot a two star. I bumped it up one notch with baked goods as well as soup, sandwich and breakfast/brunch varieties. Nothing fancy anywhere or complex and surely not gourmet but likely a popular stop for more than enough people to satisfy and keep them coming back. Sadly I won’t as I can simply get much better service next to anywhere I dine and the baked goods were not special enough.

My first time having POPOVERS and I was SOIMPRESSED! If only I could find a place in Boston with these warm, crispy, soft, eggy, pastries. I would be there every weekend. Their popovers with maple butter are $ 2.25, and it is totally worth it! They are HUGE, but all air inside. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was absolutely delicious. I tried a piece at first without the maple butter just to see what it actually tastes like, and it was nice and thin and crispy with an egg taste to it. But let me tell you. this maple butter was divine! It added a nice light sweetness to it, and definitely added more flavor to the popover. I was so excited that they had amaretto syrup because I rarely see that at coffee shops! I got a soy amaretto latte, and it was so delicious. It was a little sweet, so I would probably ask for one less pump next time. Their soups come with cute little mini popovers that I was tempted to get, but I was so full from lunch. I wanted to go back so badly the next day but we were too far from Portsmouth to make another trip. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Portsmouth!
