Greater Grinders Midtown Portsmouth is 5 Stars. This is THE stop for a great lunch or dinner… priced right… great staff and a toasted sub that’s addictive. I typically get the grinder well toasted and it comes steaming hot. The rolls are locally sourced and the meats and cheeses are primo… first bite is always a pleasure with the cheeses still lightly gooey and super satisfying. The menu IS very sub centric so don’t patronize the place and expect Ruth Chris foods at corner store prices. You CAN expect the best assortment of hot subs made right and fresh for a super reasonable price and served to you by great staff.

First time trying this place and I’ll definitely be back. If you’re new try the original greater grinder with the sweet peppers and you won’t regret it. The store has an old time feel to it in a good way, and the staff is delightful.

Tried the super great grinder sub and it was delicious. Have to get it toasted! I loved the roll, especially when it is toasted. 5 stars for very friendly service!

World class! Great subs at a good price. It’s nice to eat at a local place that is old fashioned but still just as good as the day they opened. Friendly people everywhere in this place too!

I adore the meatball sub here. My husband swears by the super greater grinder. Some of the other sandwiches we’ve tried lack distinctive flavor. Overall, this place is far better than Subway! The prices are very reasonable. We always receive friendly, fast service. We will continue coming back!

First time eating here. Ordered the greater grinder with hot peppers and mayo. Sub was toasted and very good. Only complaints are they forgot the mayo on the sub and not much flavor for the sub; no spices. Good thing I asked for hot peppers. Customer service was very good.

meh. these people are super friendly but the food is just meh. nothing is very flavorful and there aren’t a lot of options for sandwich toppings. I had to put an entire side of mixed hot peppers on my turkey sandwich in order to achieve any flavor whatsoever. I know they’ve been in business a while and they truly do excel at customer service, I just wish the sandwiches matched their awesome personalities. I left feeling unfulfilled and underwhelmed :(

My niece and I were craving subs so we stopped here. Service was fast(we were the only ones there). But to be honest, noting jumped out at me. Nothing screamed«hey visit me again.» Nothing against them, I just didnt care for my sandwich… or the prices. Service was friendly enough though. I got a ham and my niece got a turkey sandwich. I will say she loved hers and she wants me to take her by there again in the future. Sorry, but it will end up being the distant future.

This place used to be good, no more. Every time I’ve been in in the last couple years the service was god awful. The two subhumans behind the counter were mocking me for some reason right in front of my face and the food has also been sub par. Better off going to subway a couple blocks over.

Got a steak n cheese with extra cheese and extra meat and super greater grinder with extra meat. super greater grinder was ok not worth the price and definitely no different than any other place. The steak n cheese was horrible. All it was, was warmed up steak ums that tasted like cardboard. We shouldve known there was something wrong at the restaurant when we did not hear any sizzling after we placed the order. Even Zero’s sizzles. To top it off the sub was over 12 dollars!!! Ended up throwing sub away. Would definitely not go there again it recommend to others. Expected better from a family owned business.

So I have been to Greater Grinders twice now. Both times there was no line and it still took over 20 minutes to get my sandwich. The prices aren’t too bad and the sandwiches are decent but definitely not worth the wait. I don’t think i will ever go back there.

Greater Grinders is absolutely AMAZING! :) My family and I go there often. I have never been let down, ever. From the excellent friendly service to the phenomenal food, Greater Grinders is by far THE best submarine shop in Hampton Roads hands down. They slice their cheeses and deli meat on site and all of their veggies are freshly sliced on site as well. Their submarine rolls are purchased from a company in NC and they are SO delicious! Melt in your mouth onions and sweet peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, oil and vinegar and mayo and mustard if you’d like as well. A little taste of heaven if you ask me:)

Stopped here for lunch. Got the super greater grinder half sub, which comes with salami, pepperoni, 2 cheeses, lettuce, tomato, hots and sweet peppers, and spiced luncheon meat. I’ll admit some fear at trying that last one, but it all worked out for the best. The sandwich was hot, as they toast all of their subs, and it was delicious. Cheap too. $ 4.55 for the sandwich with the most stuff on it I’ve seen in a long time. Get the meal deal for an extra 1.50 for chips and a soda. My colleague got the mesquite chicken which ended up just being a chicken breast on a roll. Serves her right for eating healthy. Overall, a good spot for a quick bite to eat in the Tidewater area.
