We stopped here by accident-trying to get to Portsmouth pub but could not find parking. Round the corner we go and here it was on a side street. Food was excellent as was the service. Tried the shepherds pie and the shawarma chicken wrap-both excellent! Recommend the Chupbrewcabra porter & the mulled cider with Captain Morgan –soooo yummy! Don’t forget dessert and after dinner drinks either.

Slow slow slow. I had the Chicken Tikka Masala. It was pretty good and the portion was ok. It was seasoned well and the rice was almost perfect. A little more chicken would have been nice. Friends complained that the pot pies looked better than they tasted. We certainly enjoyed the wide selection of beers, but the wait was miserable. There were a dozen or fewer people eating in the restaurant and it took almost 90 minutes for our orders.

The service is always perfect. Very attentive! Love the real british food. As I am from england it makes me happy to find food that makes me feel I am back in England.

We were only in town to take our daughter to the Fairy House Festival, this restaurant was very close to our hotel and looked like someplace we would eat at when in our own neighborhood. What a fun find! We stopped in on a Saturday night — very busy, loud, fun vibe. My daughter and I split the Butcher’s Board, which was delicious! My daughter hogged all the Scotch egg. Very liberal with the Coleman’s and chutney. Sausage was grilled to perfection. Olives and pickles were quite tasty. My husband had the full on English breakfast, which looked delicious. So much food that he couldn’t finish it. Reasonably priced for a fun night out. Décor will make you smile. When looking out the window, saw an awesome collection of gnomes. My only complaint is that there didn’t seem to be enough staff but I attribute this to being the closed season in Portsmouth.

Great cocktails– especially the gin-based drinks, super nice bartenders! Can’t speak for the food since we were just there late night for some drinks. Next time we visit the area we will certainly stop in again!

I’ve been to the Coat of Arms several times, and it’s always a good. Friend & I got a drink at the bar while waiting for others to show. Good selection of beer on tap. My meal was good(salmon), though the rice could’ve used some flavoring(or a bit more sauce with the fish to mix in with the rice), and I really liked the asparagus. I had the English Custard Pudding dessert, which was a white-cake with more of a cream-sauce than custard/pudding.

I will only be reiterating what everyone else says. LOVETHISPUB! The scotch eggs are awesome, bangers and mash are SO tasty, and the Fish n’ chips, PERFECT! Only complaint was I disliked the shepherds pie and other pies, wanted to like them, but just really didn’t. Also try the black and black!!! Guinness and black currant cordial-YUM! Very authentic and laid back ambience :)

Fantastic and authentic pub grub. A proper fish & chips. Try the pepper pork chop as well. Great drink specials and attentive service.

This was a gem of a find on a cold Sunday evening during a business trip. Per another reviewer I ordeed the falafel. It was fantastic! Ordered a side of curry sauce to dip my fries in and I was in heaven. The dry cider was a treat but next time I plan to choose from one of the 5 or 6 gin & tonics on the menu! If I were more of an extrovert, I’d have stayed longer and joined someone’s team for trivia night. If I lived here, this would be my go-to spot!

Stopped here for lunch. The selection of Brit spirits was pretty good, the food was okay. We had the wings, wrapped sausages, scotch eggs, and London Nachos. The wings were okay. The mustard that came with the sausages was pretty great– lots of horseradish, and cleared your sinuses right out. The food itself came out quickly, but I think might be frozen. The sausage in both instances was kind of hotdog-ish. Not bad, but was lacking in texture, and very, very mild. The London nachos were fine. Atmosphere-wise, the place was fine. Divey in a fun way, had darts, arcade games, and pool. A little chilly temperature wise. The restrooms were clean, so that was nice. The staff were friendly and prompt. Very nice people. I did notice that there are a few items on the menu that are served until closing, so if I was going a late night out, that’s a great selling point. The only one I remember was French bread pizza, but that’s really all I’d need! I’d definitely stop in for a pint and a snack again.

Great selection. Great fun. They failed to mention the four dollar charge for using the pool table.

Everything it should be and more. A little divey, cool clientele, nice servers. Definitely one of my favorite spots for a pint in Portsmouth

I have always had a bit of hesitation in going to this restaurant. For those people that are longtime residents of Portsmouth New Hampshire, they remember when the space was occupied by a Mexican restaurant called the Toucan. But on a cold winter night in Portsmouth and not wanting to travel very far from my hotel, I decided to give this restaurant a try. When I walked in there was a very smell that covered the entire restaurant. It is clearly more of a bar and a place to go for beers then a nice meal. But I do expect to have good food in a clean atmosphere when I go out for a nice meal even in a casual setting. The atmosphere was in my opinion, reflective of very low standards. About half of the restaurant was full and the other half was left very much unkempt and gave the overall impression ofA lack of attention to detail with regard to cleanliness. The menu was actually very appetizing and included many items that I thought would be perfect for this type of establishment. I opted for a chicken pot pie with a couple items on the side. While the meal was overall adequate, I felt like the pie was just thrown together and not really crafted to the point where each ingredient was maximized in the dish was well put together. I say this because I have had expertly made chicken Popeyes at dangerously delicious pies in Baltimore and at the restaurant in the Los Angeles airport international terminal. I have had many very good chicken pot pies and this offering gave me the impression that it was pulled out of a premade bottles and warmed in the oven rather then actually made by a chef. The accompanying potatoes were less than fulfilling and not even hot. Overall the food left a great deal to be desired and when combined with the atmosphere of a bunch of rowdy’s playing darts just a few short feet away this experience really fell flat. However, my server was incredibly attentive and did her very best to make my experience pleasurable. She was a very personal young lady who provided just the right amount of attention while not being overbearing.

The first time I was here the shrimp was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too onion flavored, didn’t want to eat the rest after having sampled it. Then another time I tried the fish and chips. What a mistake ordering the fish and chips. GREASECITY and I could not eat the batter at all. Disappointment. Beers looked good but I was not in a drinking mood. It was freezing in there so I had to wear my big puffy jacket. They should shovel the front walkway, it was very icy Waitress 3⁄10 I really want to love this place but the food :(

I had the cider which was warm and delicious. I also had the margarita which was decent, not too sugary or strong. We were able to get a table on Friday night which we were lucky because it was packed!

Good pub, surprise trivia! I lost horribly :(but that is not their fault. Enjoyed my time here. Good draught selection. Exactly what you would hope for in an american pub. The only thing I’d ask for is more cider choices other than that«cheers»!

My girlfriend and I pop in here every time we’re in Portsmouth. She’s from the UK and agrees it’s the only legit British pub around. The food has always been pretty good, but I’m pretty sure they had a menu change in the last year or changed cooks. The chips and curry got pretty spicy and the haddock and leek pie seems smaller than I remember it, but regardless still tasty.

Stopped by for dinner late last night and was immediately seated at a cozy, roaring fire. The scene was exactly what I was looking for: casual, chill, friendly, a place I could easily bring my friends to throw back drinks but actually talk and hear each other. Oh but the FOOD, yikes. We ordered scotch eggs(sausage encased egg covered by breadcrumbs and baked) and the fish and chips with a side of onion rings. Realized that the secret to the award winning ‘chips is the unbelievably thick layer of crunchy fry. Which was absolutely ok in my book(except maybe my belly). Still, absolutely worth it because if you’re gonna go all out, you go all out, and this place is the best way to do it. #happyfryday
