Waves of Grain Bakery

So, I really do like this place, and everything I’ve eaten from there is reliably delicious. Unfortunately, they just can’t get their act together. This morning I brought in a friend for breakfast, coffee and conversation. The same problems reared their head that I have mentioned in a previous review.
I won’t bog you down with too many details, but the short version is this: I ordered their French toast, listed as having pears and pomegranate with a ginger pear compote. What I got? French toast with blueberries and raspberries. It was delicious. It was also not what I ordered. I asked them about it and the guy behind the counter shrugs and says «oh yeah, I guess we need to update the menu.»
Yeah, get on that buddy. When somebody orders something off the menu at a restaurant, it’s not a loose suggestion. It’s an order. The food is delicious, but this is NOT how to run a business. I’ll be back for sure, but the extreme unreliability of this place is a definite disappointment.

This coffee shop is truly amazing. I’ve lived in the neighbord now for a year and a half and I feel spoiled. The food is by far the best because it’s all fresh and made in house. The sandwiches are to die for and the make your own breakfast sandwiche caters to everyone. They sell fresh bread and all of their pastries are amazing. I love ginger molasses cookies which is also used as the crust in the key lime pie. Everyone should come try this place out!

I had the best cheese biscuit sandwich this morning there with egg and cheddar cheese! They even had potatoes with it which I wasn’t expecting. I’ve been going to Meat next door for my cat and had never stopped in there and was pleasantly surprised. Everything in there looked so yummy. I’d highly recommend the biscuits for sure though! :) The pricing seemed a little high to me, yet reasonable. I’ve been to places that are more for less… so I was ok with it.

Came in today for lunch and a coffee. Instead I ended up getting the cheese biscuit with sausage gravy. It comes with some nicely cooked red potatoes as well. Service was nice and quick. There’s free wifi in case you need to do work. I don’t know how crowded it is on weekends, but it wasn’t when I went on a Thursday.
I have to say that this is probably one of the most expensive orders of biscuits and gravy that I’ve ever had (especially being from the south), but it was super yummy. They also have a bottle of Louisiana hot sauce on all the tables which I absolutely appreciate!
Although a bit way overpriced, I’ll definitely be coming back.

I stopped by one weekday morning for a quick bite. It’s a cute place, but I can’t write about the food because it never came. I waited for 20 minutes (for toast and 2 eggs – the only affordable meal in the place. Sorry, but $ 9.00 for a breakfast sandwich is silly). SInce there was only one couple in the place, I felt confident it would come within a decent amount of time, but apparently the Millennials running the joint were more interested in discussing bands than preparing food. After 15 minutes, the couple got their food, and 5 minutes after that, mine still hadn’t come and I had to leave. I explained my situation to the counter person, and she seemed stunned that I couldn’t wait, and tried to «explain» that there were orders ahead of me. Apparently the cook was unable to handle 3 orders at a time.
This place is probably fine if you are supported by a trust fund and have loads of time on your hands, but if you have a life and work for a living, I wouldn’t recommend it

I’ve been in love with Waves of Grain since I discovered them in Cannon Beach a few years ago. Their swedish cream is what I imagine everything tastes like in heaven, and every time I go to the beach, I go in to get my fix. When I went back this past spring and found myself in need of some coffee and incredible treats, I made my way back to their cute spot on Hemlock but found it looking strangely different, and glaringly devoid of swedish creams. I was so disappointed by the change that I decided to ask the people that worked there what had happened. They told me Waves of Grain had moved to Portland — by some great strike of fortune, to a spot not three blocks from my house. The joy this brought me cannot be overstated, especially since just the week before, my neighborhood coffee shop dreams had just been shattered by Heart, across the street. I’d just moved back to the Buckman neighborhood and was looking for a new café where I could tend to my caffeine problem and also occasionally make myself a little bit at home. Heart was profoundly disappointing. I’ll say no more about it, since this is not a review of that unfortunate place.
Waves of Grain is unpretentious and super friendly, and so far, there isn’t a line! It truly is a gem to be discovered — their pastries and desserts are made of pure magic. The baker in that joint is a genius, there’s nothing more to to it. My boyfriend has claimed that their turkey sandwich (add bacon) on challa bread is the best sandwich he’s ever had in his life. Their breakfast sandwiches on those crazy tasty biscuits are enough to bring me to write this here Unilocal review. Waves of Grain knows flavor.
The people who work there are awesome, hilarious, helpful, and always patient with my interminable indecisiveness. Go forth, people! Discover this place! Bring your favorite people there and impress them with your knowledge of some of the finest deliciousness Portland has to offer! Bring the line out the door, and make me never want to go there again! I wish so much success to these guys. They’re doing everything right.

My review is for a brunch experience on a week-​end.
Good breakfast biscuits but the pricing is a little cray. You build your own sandwich and every ingredient is priced separately. For instance, the biscuit itself is 2.5, then a meat is 3, a slice of cheese is 2, etc. So a biscuit with just meat and cheese is already running you around $ 10. Sure you get some house potatoes with your breakfast sandy, but the price is still steep for a self-​service joint. Then, if it’s a weekend, you have to wait for your food for 10 – 15 mins.
I’d say YES for pastry/​coffee to go and SKIP for sit down meal.

Had an opportunity to taste their breads during an Unilocal event. Wonderful taste… pumpkin bread: very good. Scones (or something similar): awesome.
Would visit them in future.

I’ve been here several times now and there are several things I really like about this place, their coffee is delicious, overall their food is really good and there was NO line! I’m sure once this place gets more popular it might be different but it’s always awesome driving past the huge line at screen door to walk in, order and sit down with little to no wait. For their biscuits and gravy the regular sausage gravy seemed to need a little something, maybe more salt or herbs but the chorizo gravy was really good (I make a mean b&g so I might be more picky) and the sweet French toast was very tasty.

My husband went here yesterday morning to bring home breakfast for us and some treats. I didn’t go myself so sadly I can’t comment on the staff, interior or décor.
The bakery has a nice menu for both breakfast and lunch. The breakfast menu offers a Build Your Own Sandwich option, which allows you to completely customize your breakfast. However, it can get a little pricey depending on what you choose. Your basic choice of meat, egg, cheese and bread will run you about $ 9 at its’ minimum. They also have savory and sweet French Toast ($ 10) options, Biscuits and Gravy ($ 9), granola ($ 5.50), oatmeal ($ 7.50) and a ton of different breakfast pastries.
Their Lunch Menu looks good, and takes a little bit of a spin on classic choices. A Turkey Sandwich ($ 8.50), for example, comes topped with mango chutney. They also offer plenty of healthy options like a veggie-​happy House Salad ($ 4/​$ 7.50), a Vegetable and Hummus Sandwich ($ 8.50) and a Wheat Berry Salad with feta ($ 3.50). And for purists, there is always Peanut Butter and Jelly ($ 5).
We got the Biscuits and Gravy and the BLT, along with pastries to share. The Biscuits and Gravy were incredible. We got the Cheese Biscuits which were an extra .75. The sausage gravy was savory and delicious and full of fresh herbs. The breakfast potatoes were also very good. Even though this is a rich breakfast, it felt satisfying without feeling greasy or heavy. It’s also a good portion to share if you’re not very hungry.
The BLT ($ 8) was really good. The bread is fantastic. Heirloom tomatoes and a savory avocado aoili make it a little extra special.
Pastries we tried included a lemony blueberry bread, a Marionberry scone, a Key Lime Tart and a cinnamon bun. Everything is great, high in quality and not too sweet. It’s an excellent bakery.
They are new, and you can tell. The only negative thing I will say is that our order took 20 minutes to make, and when my husband got home he realized that he wasn’t given the BLT. He returned and they apologized and gave him a free scone. Naturally, some mistakes are going to happen when a business first opens, and patience needs to be granted for that. However, I think this bakery is worth the wait and will return as a customer again.

Waves of Grain Bakery serves up homemade cookies, brownies, and breads with love. Service is incredibly friendly. They have an amazing steel cut oatmeal with homemade cherry jam, pumpkin seeds, raisins, and brown sugar, and the most incredible biscuits — served as sandwiches (egg, cheese, meat). Go try their samples of brownies or pumpkin bread or chocolate chip cookies, and you’ll fall in love!
They also serve coffee from Coava! and Stumptown. Their attention to detail is awesome and though the bakery doesn’t look like much from the outside, the inside is fresh and bright with big windows, quaint art, and flowers on the table tops.
I was so excited when I heard that Waves of Grain was moving to Portland from Cannon Beach, and then ecstatic when I realized they were across the street from my work. Yay!

So happy this place is in my neighborhood. Their naked goods are fantastic and their menu items are equally delicious. The counter service is friendly and knowledgable. It is family friendly. Open for breakfast and lunch. Their Stumptown coffee drinks do not disappoint. I’m excited for them to get a liquor license. It’s nice to have options other than Heart or GreenBeans.

I want to give this place a higher rating because the baked goods are really fantastic… But I think they have a few kinks to work out first.
The first time we went, we just ordered coffees at the counter and it took about 20 minutes.
The second time, I got two breakfast sandwiches. Although they were delicious, it took almost a half hour to get them, they were $ 12 (!?!) each, and they got one of the orders wrong.
Prrrrretty frustrating experience overall.
We will be back to try again, but with cautious optimism.

Happy to have this gem in my neighborhood! It’s a good spot to have coffee and a treat, whether meeting someone or working on your laptop.
So far I’ve loved the quiche, ginger molasses cookies and ‘build your own’ breakfast sandwiches. Prices are reasonable to slightly expensive (ie. 2.50 for a cookie– but SO tasty!)
Looking forward to tasting the pumpkin bread and other lunch items. Friendly staff and attentive service. Good coffee (stumptown and coava). Nice, simple décor with natural light from the front windows. They are obtaining a liquor license as well!

I love it when a new bakery comes to my part of town. We have a few, but certainly not enough fresh bread around this part of town. I love fresh bread. Saying that, I haven’t had the bread here yet.
Sue and I came by last weekend because of a craving for cinnamon rolls. Happily we walked in the door and Waves of Grain had cinnamon rolls. Big ones for $ 4. We also bought a coconut cream tart ($ 6.50).
Took them back to my place, split them each in half and had an enjoyable afternoon snack. Next time, I try the bread.

I wish I lived in Portland and in the nearby vicinity of this bakery because this place is perfect. We were actually going to brunch at Screen Door, but we were so hungry and the wait was over an hour and we needed food and especially coffee STAT. I had spotted this place as we passed by and I asked our group if we could go there while we waited for our seats at Screen Door.
Between the four of us, we ordered a blueberry scone, a key lime tart, a cheese stick, and a berry muffin, and obviously coffee all around. The pastries were mind-​blowing. I’ve been trying to find a blueberry scone like it here in San Diego, but I just don’t think they exist. My friend’s key lime tart was made with a molasses crust and I cannot even explain how delicious it was.
The vibe in there was nice and quiet and mellow. I’m not sure if they have just recently opened, but everything was super clean and well designed. The service was beyond friendly and they were happy to give suggestions and help us dump a cup of coffee my husband had accidentally filled with decaf. I thoroughly enjoyed our coffee, pastries, and time here. In fact, I enjoyed it more than Screen Door. I would have preferred to just sample more goodies here rather than move on to brunch across the street, but oh well.
I hope to move to Portland someday, eat here every day, and get exceedingly, horribly, and beautifully fat from all the morning, afternoon, and evening pastries I would eat.
**Edit: I just saw their bio and that they started in Cannon Beach, which makes me love them even more because I grew up in Astoria. Oh, Waves of Grain! Come to San Diego! **

We ordered different stuff this time. I had buttermilk biscuits with pork sausage gravy. She had a raspberry chocolate scone. And we both had lattes. The service was again very good. The Lattes were also good. My wife thought the scone was very good to excellent. But the biscuits and gravy… Not so good. They give you two BIG biscuits covered in gravy. But these people must think the dough is the star of all their offerings. Because there was 2x more biscuit than there ought to be. The was no way for me to eat a biscuit tall forkful of the meal without getting dry mouth. The gravy while good was nothing special. So i sliced both biscuits in half and set the dry side aside. Added salt, pepper, and hot sauce. Wha la … I turned it from inedible to good! But i should not have to do that. And never had to do that at Pine State.
BTW service was still very friendly and they asked what i thought about the biscuits.
So we will probably be back but it will be for my wife who would give this place 5 stars.

Yum. My husband LOVES molasses cookies. They hard to find. Here at Waves of Grain they have the best cookies. Not only the molasses but the chocolate chips are very good. Their key lime pie is seriously the best in the west. Prices are

I’m so glad Waves of Grain has moved into my neighborhood from the beach. Great pastries, friendly people, and awesome biscuit sandwiches. The bacon cheddar beer soup is amazing!
We’re so happy we can get our Waves of Grain fix by walking ½ mile instead of driving 75. Now I’m going to eat my cinnamon roll. Yum.
