Uchiyama Design Studio International is the private Japanese landscape practice of Sadafumi Uchiyama. He is the current curator of the Portland Japanese Garden where he may be reached. You can see his bio here: . He is especially skilled in the design of rocks and masonry in Japanese gardens, a specialty learned from his family in Japan. He is very skilled in the design of water courses and the rocks defining them. Slopes present a multitude of challenges for landscape design, and Uchiyama is the best in Portland for meeting that challenge while making it look good. He is unique in the area, having both a certification for Japanese garden design and maintenance in Japan and a US landscaping degree and certification. Of all the Japanese designers in the area, he is the youngest and easiest to work with. Youngest is relative though, he has 40 years experience. That has translated to international commissions. He designed my space and supervised standout aspects, as well as the space of another close friend, including a watercourse, from who I found Sada San. We are both happy and supportive. He related excitement to me on seeing a striking wall constructed near Chapman, and then discovering it was built by another world renowned out of town mason, whose style he recognized. That’s landscape geekery in a great way, from whom else would you find that in Portland? In the world, there are well under 100 top Japanese garden designers. Uchiyama is one, a designer for ambitious residential, commercial, institutional and public Japanese landscapes, in Portland and worldwide. Truly world class.
