I bought a Cake for my moms bachelorette party, it was the worth cake I ever bought. The cake was a man with no clothes on. It had no had no favor and the cake looked like a 5 year old made it. When I went to pick up the cake they had None thing I the store but a couple of donuts, literately 2 donuts. A friend referred me here and I will NEVER send anybody here.

Ascend to heaven on a crème puff cloud! Imagine if you will: a fuffy, old-fashioned powdered sugar donut. Now cut that in half, inject it with air, turn it into a sandwich which is then filled with a fresh berry mix and homemade Bavarian crème. This is exactly what I bit into, sitting beside a patinaed copper clock in the iconic St. John’s Square. The«cloud» was almost too good to be believed. Like most of everything at Tulip. Tulip is a St. John’s institution that’s seemingly beloved by everybody. And for good reason! Everything is made from scratch. Everything is made with love, care, passion, and an insane attention to detail. Cat’s a local treasure, and a devoted business owner. She loves what she does, and will tell you all about it. If you want to know if the eclairs are better than then canoli, she’ll discuss it with you. Her passion is infectious, making you want to try absolutely everything in the vintage glass display cases. Me and H. had a cloud and an éclair, respectively, as well as splitting an eggnog macaroon. Neither one of us are that crazy for eggnog. Both of us were crazy for this macaroon, which had a delicious flaky coconut texture. Tulip is the definition of locally owned and operated, and is a perfect representation of why Portlanders are so obsessed with supporting local businesses. It’s because we have so many of them here! Later in the day, at Club Sky High, the guy who was helping us had grown up in St. John’s and remembered getting .50 donuts at Tulip before school at James John Elementary, across the street. That’s a legacy you can be proud of. We don’t live in St. John’s any longer, and still make the trek to pick up Cat’s delicious goods. You should do the same. Tulip tends to close a little earlier, around 3 pm, when they sell out for the day, so make sure to get there early!

WOWWOWWOW. My sister and I stopped in here on a whim and are SO glad we did. What an adorable and nostalgic little bakery shop! Been in the neighborhood for 65 years and it’s easy to see why. We had a hard time picking what to get because everything looked super yummy(and is made from scratch). Prices were VERY reasonable. Cat helped us pick out an iced raisin loaf and it was amazing. I have a very refined sweet tooth(and my sister is particular about her sweets!) and this was immensely good. It was not too doughy and just the right kind of softness, chock full of raisins, and just the right amount of icing on top. One of the best sweet loaves I’ve ever had. The icing on the cake(no pun intended) was the absolutely lovely welcome and service from Cat. My sister and I were sincerely impressed. What a gem she is — as a business owner myself, I can attest that she is one of the kindest and passionate business owners I’ve come across anywhere — and I travel a lot. It’s no wonder this shop has been around for so many years. I wish them all the success and can’t wait to visit again when I’m in St. Johns.

Baked fresh every day and you can tell there are no shortcuts. She never sells old pastries and bakes a certain amount per morning anticipating her customers. Just such a genuine pastry shop and much better than voodoo

Best Cannoli in Portland. I do not say that lightly. Plus — excellent employees. True St Johns Gem. A place to come, enjoy the smells, and leave with a delicious pink box of handmade from scratch goodies in which one can truly taste love.

Just happened upon Tulip Pastry Shop today and it was such an amazing little shop, made better by the friendly employee(owner?) that met me at the counter. Kat was extremely amazing and awesome and there really are infinite adjectives to describe how wonderful they were. Can’t even tell you what I got because I was so delighted with the conversation but I know whatever I was chowing down on was tasty and savory. Go here, you won’t regret it. Get the lemonade they make too.

Why hasn’t this place gone out of business? Minimal selection, food for fatties. I just can’t understand why they can’t have fresh bread, more than one donut selection, good cookies — you know, like a real bakery, instead of a museum for cheap american kitsch. Move on.

The Tulip Pastry Shop is out of this world exceptional. It has memorabilia and décor of all kinds about both baking and transportation. Their various products such as donuts are very tasty. They are also inexpensive. The lines are not bad, not bad at all. I walked in and ordered the maple bar. It was only seventy-five cents. Everything about it such as the sweetness, the quality of the dough and it’s lacking of any fast-food style presentation makes this potentially one of Portland’s best places to eat. Nothing feels off about the product. It melted perfectly in my mouth, rather than my shirt. The maple taste was rich. They could have more than one table, but with so many parks and benches, that is not much of a problem. Tulip Pastry Shop is a list topper.

In a panic I needed to get a cake for a party and had never been to Tulips. They had 2 cakes available and I bought both… The two running the shop were both unbelievably sweet and helpful. The cakes were insanely delicious and perfectly made. Awesome little St. John’s gem.

This pastry shop is exceptional. Everything is delicious. Customer service is friendly and fast. Pricing is VERY reasonable. Plus, it’s a local independent pastry shop that’s been in business in the heart of downtown St John’s for decades. My fave: the coconut twists. Sooooo good.

After burgers at Brekkens(I know you love that alliteration), Ron and I stopped off to check out the always delicious cookie selection here at Tulip. After some thought and drooling, we settled on something the proprietor called her«cowboy cookie.». Such a list of ingredients! I remember coconut, raisins, and chocolate chips, but there were more. Definitely a worthy dessert served up by the very friendly person who baked them. Do come and give the treats here a try(didn’t think I was going to finish without another try at alliteration did you?).

«What foods these morsels be…» These are classic and timeless pastries made simply and beautifully. The dough is so light and mouth melting. The icings taste like they were made in small batches at home. It feels like it’s been there forever because it has. You’ll feel nostalgic for every early memory you have of lovely donuts and pastries. Often good food is about the way it makes us feel as much as how it tastes. So good.

The only thing that would up this place in my esteem… is if they also made bagels of a similarly outstanding caliber as the rest of their stuff! That and more tables! But otherwise, I would have to work really hard to find fault with this quaint, old-fashioned, freindly and scrumpsious St Johns bakery! Three large cases of baked goods, a table and two chairs, two stools, and a long bar(were there seats on the other side?) pretty much sums up this shop located on Lombard at the end of downtown St Johns. But there’s a lot to choose from. The owner(or one of them — I forget her name) waited on us. This is a family bakery — here since the 1920s if I am correct. She was super friendly, down to earth. Another owner came out later and was also really nice. You feel so welcomed! Prices here are GREAT! My glazed donut was .75. Yes, you read that right. And it was one of the best glazed donuts I’ve ever had! My young friend had a maple/cocolate glazed, custard filled donut(my bite was delish!, and only $ 1 since it was a day old). I also ordered some savory items and shared bites with my other friend. New $ 3, day old 2 for $ 3 — what a deal. Many flavors… we tried a sausage and a cheddar/broccoli flaky pastry. YUM. I also got a sweet bbq pork bun which I ate as soon as I got home. I am in love and will get one fo those every time I come here! I had a sip of coffee — not enough to judge — but it definetly wasnt bad, or I’d have noticed. I swear — all of this cost around $ 10 — maybe even less. What took me so long to try this place? What’s taking you so long? Get down there now, soon, and often! I will be back, no doubt many times! They aren’t open Sundays or Mondays… bumer for us — good for them. And for those of you counting, this is a 5 for the glazed donut as well!

«Just swing by Voodoo and pick up donuts on your way into work» The dreadful line I’ve heard spew out of my colleague’s mouth one too many times. «…but…I have my own local donut shop…» mumbles from mine. «Fine. But It’s on YOU if you want to go out of your way.» Oh, daaarn I have to drive a whole three minutes to the cutest pastry shop in the world. Get my beautifully made, ultra fresh dozen donuts plucked and arranged by the owner himself all while waiting negative 2 minutes in line. Darn. Eleven bucks cash and I’m out like trout. Colleague comments as follows: «Oh, wow cool Shakespeare quote on the brand stamp…» «Oh, yum, these are really good…» —pause for two hours– «Time for another donut… gosh I am such a bad influence.» Now, my comments: Rich, airy, golden dough. Homemade, developed maple icing. Beautiful raspberry jam filled centers, perfect white icing. But. Get. This. A pretzel shaped donut, frosted with white fluffy cream and topped with chopped walnuts. Done!
