Just ate my birthday cake made in the Bakery in this grocery store. It was one of the best cakes I’ve had in 75 yrs., decorated just the way I wanted. Inexpensive for what it was. I’ll order another cake when I have a need for one. We’ve had food from the restaurant, no better Mexican food on the east side of Portland. Thanks again for making my birthday a success. I can see why you were on the FOODNETWORK.

If you want fresh delicious Mexican food at a great price, here’s your place. It’s a deli, but there is seating where you’ll usually catch a tele novella on the TV. Great takeout for a party. We usually get the carne asada, home made tortillas and rice and beans with their home made guacamole and a couple of different salsas. Makes for a stress free burrito bar party. Olé!

They make some of the best burritos that I’ve eaten, couldn’t stand the chili rellenos or rude service. It’s inside of a store.

The store is not fancy at all. However, very friendly staff. I bought corn dough/masa for tamales and it was excellent.

Best affordable Mexican food on the east side. Not a traditional dining experience, just a kitchen in back of a grocery store. But the Mexican food(pork beans and rice) is out of this world !! A plus plus.

I purchased 500 tortillas here on the morning of my wedding. Yes, they are made by hand but they run them through a big tortilla machine so they are uniform. I don’t care about that, they tasted amazing — fresh, fabulous and still warm and the price was rediculously good. When I had gone there to arrange it the week before, I spoke with one really sweet older man who spoke English, but the day of the wedding when I called to confirm I could not get anyone on the phone who did. My Spanish is terrible so I had a slight heart attack at that point — luckily I had a friend over who speaks fluently and she got on the phone. Indeed they had my order as promised! The place is in this weird little strip mall in between a plasma donation center and a drive through cigarette shop. Not the most inviting location, but who cares? I couldn’t have been happier with the tortillas, they really made our wedding buffet outstanding.

I was pretty disappointed after my first visit. I drove there for fresh tortillas but what they had out for sale looked at least 1 – 2 days old. Yes they are better than the tortillas you can get in a supermarket but not that much better. So here are my ratings of the things I tried: Fresh tortillas 3⁄5 Tortilla chips 4⁄5(but slightly stale) Assorted salsas 4⁄5 Carnitas burrito 3⁄5 Chicken sope 2⁄5 The lady was very nice with limited English vocabulary and I speak a little Spanish so it worked ok. I am going to give it one more try and will amend my review if indicated. I really liked the people who work there but growing up in SCAL my expectations are high for Mexican food and markets.

So, I went primarily for the tortillas expecting handmade tortillas and secondarily for the carnitas. I was disappointed with both. The tortillas are what you would expect from any regionally made tortilla. Are they better than the crap they sell in the grocery store? 99% yes, there are a few exceptions. Are they truly handmade, no. They are uniform in shape, size and color and the flavor was unexceptional. As for the carnitas, were they good? Pretty good but they were incredibly greasy and by the time I got home, they had leaked grease all throughout the bag making everything a big mess. Dumping a bunch of carnitas in a pack of tinfoil is quite impractical. The bottom line is that neither were worth driving from the netherlands of Vancouver(and no, I can’t find good tortillas or carnitas here either) to Gresham. Forget that whole Northeast Portland thing, this is Gresham. Boonies. And I’m saying this as someone who used to drive to Hillsboro for Yoga. I don’t mind the drive but I expect excellence when I make it. No exaggeration when people have stated that the staff don’t speak english. It was all I could do to ask for samples. I wish I was fluent in spanish but the whole immersive method of teaching sends me straight into a panic attack — or at least the class I took last year did… could have been the teacher’s style of immersion. On the plus side, they do have that creamy green salsa that I’ve only seen one other place in Northern Washington at a fabulous little taqueria. This version was spicier while the place I’d tried in Northern Washington was more flavorful. I need to figure out how to make this stuff at home. I felt rushed because there was a line so I only briefly sampled the other salsas and couldn’t really tell if I liked any of them. Back to the detractions, I got a small bag of the homemade chips and they were stale. I’m only glad I didn’t shell out for the large bag. I thought the beans were pretty good but the rice had an odd spice to it. I prefer a more traditional mexican rice.(not the red stuff but the one shade yellow above clear and sometimes with carrrots and short grain rice) The older gentleman from the pics was all smiles and the lady behind the counter let me go with a straight 20.00 charge for everything I ordered because I only had another 20 and no change which was a nice thing to do. If I lived in the area, I’d probably be a regular but it just isn’t worth the drive and the expense.

Holy Mole! Super awesome genuine people who work with a smile. I love that this place is getting such good reviews on Unilocal, because it made me go in there. I grew up off of 162nd and Fremont and have driven by this building 1000’s of times. Not sure when this business opened up but damn me for not going in sooner! I was lost… confused as to all hell about what to order. I love mexican food, speak decent spanish and know usually what to order. However, when I looked into the heating case where the meat just sat screaming«pick me» i got nervous and drew a blank. The nice lady who I ordered from offered me a few«baskin n robbin» style samples of meat. I almost choked on the first one due to the fact I inhaled it down. She kindly grabbed me a glass for water. I asked what I presume to be the owner what I should order. She suggested the burrito. I had the pork and it was awesome. The only thing I am left wondering is what to order the next time I go it, and how often I should reasonably go back without feeling like I am going in too often. Next time apparently im ordering the Rellenos per the recommendation of the owner. Kudos to you! and as Arnie says«I’ll be baaack!»

We lived down the street for months before ever stepping foot inside, and the moment we did we wondered why we hadn’t discovered this place sooner! Everything here is amazing. From the outside, it’s unimpressive and easy to pass by, situated next to a plasma center and laundromat. Do not be fooled! Inside this gem is some of the best Mexican food I’ve had, and I lived in Southern California and grew up around a lot of real Mexican cooking so I’d like to think I have a good idea of what this cuisine is supposed to taste like. My husband and I are in here a couple times a week when we are able, and we’ve worked our way through most of the menu, ALL of it is just pure food goodness. My favorites are the chicken tinga and nopales salad. On the side, they also sell homemade salsas and chips and these are worth spending the extra money on, or worth going in for all on their own. They also cater, do bulk orders, and sell their meat and beans by the container if you want them(um, yes please!). They aren’t cheap, but they certainly aren’t pricey at around $ 7 for a burrito and those extra couple of dollars are absolutely worth it. It’s family run, too, so I feel good supporting the business. Go here and prepare to eat way more food than you intend to, because it’s just so good. The only downside? Their hours are pretty limited. They serve food from around lunchtime to 5pm.

The restaurant is at the back of the store. Check it out, it’s worth while. :) I had a combo plate: Carnitas, rice, bean & tortilla for $ 7.99. O Yummmm!

I wrote a lengthy and positive view of this place, which said: GO Here! Unilocal dropped my lengthy text, and I don’t feel like trying to recreate it. But, to keep it short, go here! We’re from Oly, and haven’t found anything this good from Seattle on south. Go here! Did I mention? Go here! Oh, and if you love carnitas, DEFINITELY go here!

Since moving to Portland in ’01, I have been continuously looking for the next best Mexican restaurant and this is it… Bar none! Hidden in the back of the store you will find a piece of Mexico. Two chef’s from Oaxaca run the kitchen. They have all the classic«guisados» stews, that I grew up on in Mexico. Their dishes are all lined up on display as they keep warm for you to see and choose. You pick your«guisado» and your side dish(beans and rice) and away you go to enjoy a piece of heaven on earth. Did I almost forget to tell you that they have fresh hand made tortillas, which further enhance the taste of their food? Amazing. Yes, they could probably expand the kitchen and have a fancier dining room, but HEY it would take away its old skool charm and feel of Mexican décor and a traditional family dining experience. I could go on and on about how great this place is but, go and find out for yourself instead. Provecho!

After living briefly in San Diego and Phoenix for 12 years and surviving almost exclusively on Mexican delights I’ve been on a totally fruitless quest to find a good taco shop in the food-Mecca of Portland. Finally I have found the mountain top. This deli/grocery/taco shop has it all. For one the pork and cactus is the best. It’s run by an awesome family that basically just serves up homemade Mexican food in the taco void of Portland. If you want to know what real south of the border cuisine tastes like with out hopping the Tijuana trolley this is it. If you long to escape from the rude hipster taco crap on Hawthorn this is your refuge.

Finally dropped by last night for a quick dinner to take home and gorge myself on. I ordered the Chile Rellano Combo with rice and beans(chose the black beans). It also came with 2 tortillas(chose the flour). This was a TON of food for $ 8.99. It was also quite delicious. I could have ate an entire bowl of those beans. Yum yum. The rellano was good but it might not have been my best choice for to-go, it was cool by the time I got home. That will happen with fried food — my fault, not their’s. The tortillas were great too. Not sure if they make the flour ones in house, but they didn’t have that store bought underlying flavor many tortillas do. I know they make the corn ones in house, so I’ll try those next time. I purchased some of their chips and one of their medium salsas(it was the deep red one, can’t remember the name). Loved both. They were friendly, quick, and food was great. I’m looking forward to returning for some carnitas.

I have eaten an unholy amount here since discovering this place. From sopping milky sweet tres leches cake to crispy chicharonne. The lengua taco was on point while my chile rellano doused in savory chicken sauce was a perfect harmony of crispy, melty cozy. The servers are so nice! I learned about a food cart that specializes on a sandwich from Puebla Mexico and different kinds of spices I have never heard of. I look forward to trying all sorts of delicious things here while learning more about other places to try!
