Service by cute, personable and attentive waitress started strong but declined during the meal. Chicken fried steak was less than stellar. The breading did not hold and the beef was chewy and rather tasteless. It would be safe to say Elmer’s chicken fried steak is superior. The Ruben was very greasy and while the pastrami was tender, it tasted more like pot roast. I know the owner chefs are highly decorated, so we expected more. Not likely that we will return this establishment.

One of the best places for lunch or dinner in Portland. Chicken fried steak, amazing! Pumpkin pancakes, outstanding, but only in the Fall. Great service too. Highly recommended!

American. Traditional. Grandmas house for Sunday dinner. Wife had the fried chicken. I had braised beef. OMG what’s not to like. Portions are just like grandmas family table. Everything was perfect. Trio pudding dessert was too much to share between the two of us and then we had two cookies also? Wow. Dinner drink was Skeet Team; as our waitress called it–«Boozy Arnold Palmer». Go before 6 to guarantee no waiting.

Always a solid meal, split the open face meatloaf sandwich with a salad. Terminal velocity IPA on tap! How can ya go wrong.

Brunch! No wait on a Sunday at 930am. Started with basket of pecan cinnamon rolls, which are the best I’ve had. slightly crisp outside and soft buttery goodness inside. Went well with the coffee. Brunch was country fried chicken steak, sour cream mashed tater, sautéed greens and gravy. Good portions — I ate half and was happily full. Ask your server to look at a copy of the boom the country cat has published. I’ll be back soon to try another brunch and also try the dinner menu. Servers and staff were friendly, and I felt the pricing was solid.

The service here is as amazing as the food. I can’t tell you how nice it is to eat somewhere the staff is excited to make recommendations. The cocktails were well-made(our server happened to be the bartender, so we were spoiled!) and the food was amazing. So far, not a damn thing to complain about and how can anyone have a bad thing to say about anywhere that offers a chef’s counter experience?!

The service was exceptional! The food wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t very good either. I make better breakfast at home. But hey, the service was great!

I was really wanting to like this place, as I love their emphasis on farm-to-table, but it was honestly not very good. Cost– Pretty overpriced. For 3 adults and 1 child, the bill(incl tip) came to $ 70 for brunch. We only ordered 3 coffees for our drinks, so I can’t even attribute that high bill to alcohol. Good thing we didn’t splurge on the mimosas! Atmosphere-Cute, but very loud, even on a weekday. Could hardly hear ourselves talk, so we were just trying to hurry up and eat and get out of there. Food-We ordered a kids plate, the Vegetable Hash, the Biscuits and Gravy, and a basket of Biscuits. The Hash vegetables were very good, however the roasted potatoes in there were just gross. They tasted old, and had obviously been cooked at an earlier point and then reheated. My husband ate only half of his Biscuits and Gravy, and then decided it just wasn’t good enough to keep on eating. The biscuits were unappetizing, and the gravy wasn’t your typical«white» gravy, but rather dark brown turkey gravy(like you would put over mashed potatoes). Seemed odd to serve that kind of gravy over biscuits, not a winning combo. Again, the potatoes served with his dish were not good. Out of the 3 biscuits that came with the biscuit basket, only one was eaten. They just tasted like a bland corn biscuit, with an odd aftertaste. Considering the basket was $ 9, that was a waste. Service-was great. Very friendly. Overall, Very disappointing, will not be back.

My only problem was it was so good, I kept eating and gave myself a stomach ache. Great service! The fried chicken with greens and mashed potatoes and gravy were best I’ve had in years. Ordered shoestring onions for appetizers. Needless to say, we devoured them in minutes. And even the ketchup tasted homemade. Very good food. Portions are big, so you won’t leave hungry.

Fantastic chicken and biscuits are SO good. The Cat has a great vibe and usually busy. Drinks are excellent. Definitely, a place to take someone for a GREAT meal that is comforting and tastes amazing. I’d put it on par w/Screen Door, but quieter with a diner feel(but don’t let that fool you, definitely amazing quality).

Mmmmm I absolutely love this place! One of our go-to spots for late morning/early afternoon brunch and it hasn’t disappointed yet! I have tried various menu items from their classic eggs, home fries and biscuit, to their grilled cheese and tomato soup, to most recently, their season vegetable hash with a poached egg on top. I have yet to try the fried chicken and I think that’s a must soon! Their biscuits are to die for. Order the basket of them if you’re with a friend and you won’t be disappointed… Or better yet, eat them all yourself! ;) Last visit there I wanted to go a little healthier and ordered the seasonal vegetable hash which was delicata squash, brussel sprouts, kale and some other delicious veggies on top of their house potatoes and topped with a perfectly poached egg. Scrumptious!

This was our second attempt at coming here, the first time it was an hour and half wait so we ended up having a great brunch down the street. This time it was a 45 minute wait, we gave em our phone number and walked down the street to the amazing farmer’s market and purchased some goodies while we waited. I got the fried chicken skillet, my boyfriend got the pork chili over grits. I wouldn’t call it «chili» at all, it was pulled pork over grits, topped with two eggs. Honestly, we were already a bit full from snacking for over an hour at the farmer’s market.(We never got a text or call that our table was ready so we stopped back in after it had been over an hour of waiting time.) My fried chicken was good. But for a small side salad, the sweet bread I didn’t care for, and two little pieces of chicken for $ 15… I can’t say it was worth the price. The service was pleasant, the Stumptown coffee was great! Upon leaving we saw some guests with the Bloody Mary’s, they looked amazing! Glad we got to try the place! Saw the owners on Chopped and they seem like great chefs and people!

Country Cat definitely has word-of-mouth for THE place to go heard by a recent trip from talking to friendly strangers and friends. Since my friend lives in the hood, we stopped by for a early dinner. I found there is very little«country» at this urban minimalist décor restaurant. Country may be found by drinking out of jars and simple flowers on the table. Seating is limited like the décor. Menu is simple Overpriced Fried chicken has no uniqueness Customer service bland

Fantastic place for brunch, but you should make reservations! My girlfriends and I stopped here on the way home to Seattle and it didn’t disappoint. Two of us had the eggs benedict with house-cured ham, which arrived piled on top of a homemade biscuit with a delightful lemony hollandaise, and the WT my friend had also looked amazing. Kid friendly(we had one with us), and awesome service.

ATMOSPHERE: The exterior is simple, red, and dark with a cat mosaic by the entrance. The interior was modern with lots of wood and metal; industrial in appearance almost. It was busy when we arrived, and there was a wait. We decided to go here after getting off the airplane and wanting breakfast. We noticed it was on a television show that my fiancé’s mother and my mother watch, which made us definitely want to try it and tell them all about it. SERVICE: It was good. The hostess was fantastic! She was friendly, and she was very sweet to my son. She offered him a coloring page and crayons when he was going crazy from waiting. Our server was quite busy, so we didn’t see much of her. She was okay. There was another lady going around and doing little stuff for the servers. She was really nice and helpful. FOOD: We ordered the Slow Burn, the kid’s Fried Chicken, and the kid’s Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup. The Slow Burn is two sunny side up eggs on top of pulled pork chili and grits. The eggs were great, and the pulled pork chili had lots of pulled pork. It wasn’t much of what I would consider a chili, but it had quite a nice kick to it. The kid’s Fried Chicken was awesome. It was seasoned and cooked well. It came with very well seasoned and cooked potatoes, too. The kid’s Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup was great. The grilled cheese was elevated from the normal kid’s ones you see, and the tomato soup had this wonderful smoky flavor to it. OVERALL: It was a good experience, and we’d visit again… soon.

After our sunrise hike we went here for brunch. Our waitress was very nice and we got seated right away because we came when it just opened. What’s good about this place is that they take reservations, which not many Portland breakfast joints do. I ordered the country fried steak and it was delicious but the breading of the steak did not adhere to the meat well so it all just came apart right when you cut the meat. It was in a shallow bowl thing too and was hard to cut the steak. The cinnamon rolls we ordered were tasty but we’re basically soaked in butter.

I was finally able to breakfast/brunch at the Country Cat, since it’s a little further out from Downtown Portland where I normally stay when traveling out this way. We got there about 15 minutes after they opened on a Saturday, and the restaurant was mostly full already. By 9:30am, they were completely full and there was a super long line by the time we left, so definitely come early to avoid having to wait! We tried: –Cast Iron Skillet Fried Chicken(w/Bacon-Pecan Spoonbread & Field Greens, Dressed w/Maple Syrup, $ 15, ): Yum– solid fried chicken. The skin was crispy and flavorful, and the chicken was fried very well. However, the bacon-pecan spoonbread was very boring, and way too dense. I didn’t like the field greens in here at all, since the flavor of the balsamic dressing didn’t go well with anything else on the plate. –Half Order of Bacon($ 3), Side of Gravy($ 3), One Biscuit($ 3) [ : The bacon was ok, but the fat to lean ratio was uneven among the three pieces. Also, one piece was way overcooked/almost burnt, which was disappointing. The biscuit and gravy were good, but the gravy was a brown gravy, and I’m a fan of cream based gravy. I would probably get the bacon and biscuit again but not the gravy. –Stumptown Coffee($ 2.75): Solid, and they give you free re-fills. Our server was super sweet, and the service here was excellent. Overall, this is a solid brunch spot, and they give you gigantic portions so it’s definitely a good value. There are some street parking spots available, but it’ll likely be difficult to find parking after it gets busier.

The food here is okay, but the portions arent worth the prices. I decided to check this place out because I saw it on Diners, Drive ins and Dives a week before traveling to Portland. I was pleased with breakfast, but dinner was rather bland and boring, especially considering I’d ordered the Whole Hog. It looks good, but it could have been so much tastier. Perhaps its because I opted to make it gluten free, so I didnt get the breaded cube of head cheese? Surely that cant make that big of a difference, but I honestly wouldn’t know. If you DO eat gluten, I am sure that this place is an entirely different and much more delicious experience. As a person with a gluten allergy, I feel my dollars are simply better spent elsewhere.

Well, this is a long over due review… Came here in January when we were in Seattle watching the food network. It was a road trip so we would be going through Oregon going back to California. We decided to stop by for brunch, luckily we made it just in time before closing. I tried their fried chicken with pecan of course. Chicken was yummy and not dry at all. I also got their beef jerky to go… It was not what I expected… I most likely wouldn’t get it again… Overall service was great and the food we ordered were yummy other than the beef jerky. *this place gets busy *plenty of street parking
