Tango Berretin

I’ve visit and dance at many studios in USA. Tango Berretin has an embrujo inexplicable. Tango sounds feels and it is dance awesome here

This is probably the epicenter of tango culture in Portland. Along with the hipsters and strippers, Portland is for some reason a big place for tangueros. Weird!
I’ve been here a couple of times, and how many stars I advise depends on who you are and what you are coming for. If you are a woman with no experience, come on Saturday nights. There are many men (not sleazily) who will ask you to dance regardless of your experience. Just keep a guy’s eye contact until you are asked. If you are Señor Tanguero, then you already know this place, so why are you reading this? If you are a novice guy, then come for the class. Beware the longer you stay, the more uncomfortable it will be. If you are on a first date, then come for the class, nibbles and go somewhere later before the tangueros separate you. But if you are comfortable pair that can dance with others then by all means go… um wait, the place for swingers is downtown. Maybe I should have re-​worded that…

Tango is the closest passion to my heart. Milongas are SOCIAL dances, but unfortunately unless you actually know people here, it isn’t a place to go if you want to be asked to dance. I’m not sure if this is just the «culture of Portland» but for a visitor, it was alienating. I was visiting from San Diego; everywhere I travel, if it fits into my schedule, I attend a milonga. All milongas I have been to were very welcoming and warm. However, at this place I just sat there for three and a half hours, never once asked to dance. A lady from Germany decided to sit next to me and said she was disappointed because she hasn’t been asked to dance either. She was in the same boat. After an hour or so, she finally said she «had» it and decided to breach Argentine milonga etiquette and asked a man to dance with her. He was an old guy, and only danced a bit of the song with her, not even a tanda! If she was daring enough to ask someone, and they only gave her a portion of a song, why would I to bother asking someone to dance if I were to be treated the same way? We weren’t welcome in their community, so unless you are familiar with some people here, expect to be left out. In other venues where I have danced before, (not in Portland), no one just leaves you sitting there for more than three and a half hours. Left feeling like I paid money to go here for nothing.

This has to be one of the coolest spots in Portland. I cannot believe I’m only the second person to write a review, but tangueros seem to spend every spare moment either practicing or talking about shoes, so maybe they just haven’t gotten around to it yet.
For Tango, this is the place. Many (if not all) of Portland’s best dancers can be seen here and the floor energy on a good night feels like it’s coming up from the floorboards. If you dance tango, you need to go here.
Alex Krebs (the owner) creates a really great ambiance and has weekly classes for those who want to learn Argentine Tango. But, as the other reviewer stated, this is a dance in close embrace, so you’ll be spending time in close contact with other people’s body. Be prepared!

If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at the sexy, sultry Argentine tango… this is the place to learn. Don’t confuse this with ballroom tango… and this dance is not for people with space issues. Argentine tango is danced in a «close embrace». So bring breath mints and wear deodorant.
I’ve taken tango classes at several locations and found that Alex does an excellent job of teaching this dance, and explaining the nuances of the tango. There are quite a few beginning classes here to choose from.
