Sushi Chiyo

Saturday morning I was driving to Pip’s donuts and had passed this place. I remember it becuase I was sitting at a stoplight reading their happy hour sign. Then when I was back at my friend’s place, she mentioned she had a favorite rotating sushi spot, and I was like «Is it Sushi Chiyo?» Turns out, it was! So we stopped by after 2pm on a Saturday.
I am pretty sure we got happy hour prices. I think had 5 plates and it came out to less than $ 10 and I was stuffed!
I enjoyed their nigiri, rolls, baked mussels, I thought everything was tasty for rotating sushi! And great price! I would come back!

This 5 star review is taking in mind that this is cheap conveyor belt sushi.
The place is spotless. The service is good and the sushi is better than the competition for this type of sushi. (The only item that is better at sushi land is the calamari. All other items especially the unagi and the creamy scallops is far better here than the competition.)
Come here during happy hour 2 – 4 pm and it’s a steal!!!

This time around the offerings were slimmer. Some of the tempura rolls I pulled were a little soggy. I did get a special order volcano roll so it was hot and delish. The sashimi was good. HH everyday is one way to generate customers and it definitely works. We got there at 2:15 and by 3:15 it was pretty full. The hot tea is good stuff especially since it’s complimentary. Service is good. Waitresses are all nice and on their A game.

It’s always fun to watch the little plates circle around on the conveyor. Nigiri was nice and fresh to spite having made a trip or two around the restaurant before meeting its fate at my table/​belly. Definitely order the scallop cups! You can get them 2 ways… spicy or regular. Delectable! I don’t know if they ever put them on the carousel, but no matter — get them made fresh. Nice and cool, melts in your mouth, with a nice little crunch from the fresh nori wrapped around the outside. GET IT!
I swear we had like 15 plates, plus my large sake and the bill was only $ 43! I do not live anywhere near Chiyo, but will definitely find an excuse to come back. Sorry no time for pics as I was busy shoveling sea creatures into my pie hole.

Soon as I walked in for lunch I could tell they weren’t really in to serving. I asked for a seat at the bar and what I assumed was the owner essentially told me there wasn’t seating available on an almost empty bar. After that, she derisively looked away and ignored me. What’s the deal?!? I was dressed business casual, it’s not like I looked like I couldn’t pay. I just walked out.

We are really glad this place opened after our local sushi place changed owners/​chefs and then folded (Hama Sushi). This is our new sushi favorite! There are 5 different price plates for the different kinds of sushi ranging from $ 1.85 to about $ 3.25? each.
Our favorite sushi plates are «Tiger Roll», «Green Dragon Roll», «and Vegas Roll».
They also have basic rolls with either avocado and cream cheese, etc that would apply for kids.
Prime time when its busy is after 7pm.
My wife and I usually spend around $ 27 – 30 for our dinner meal and we are stuffed!

The employees were very friendly, the atmosphere was ok. I found the sushi to look nice but it didn’t taste all that great, and definitely not very fresh. I think this would be a great place in a pinch, maybe if you lived around here, but definitely not a destination sushi location. Also it is very small so not good for groups at all.

If you like raw salmon, like I do, this is your place. They do not really have very much on selection that goes around but holy wow on not just how much salmon but the size of the portions are huge for $ 1.85… The waitress was super nice too and kept coming back and checking in with us which was pretty impressive as well since they were busy. The restaurant was also very clean. I did not order or attempt to order anything from the chefs because I was so happy eating so much salmon but I will work on that for next time… and, oh yes, there will be a next time. Nom nom nom nom…

When I am in the mood for inexpensive sushi, I hit up Sushi Chiyo. Check out their happy hour, where plates on the conveyor belt are $ 1.85 each. The service can be hit or miss, but I am not really here for exceptional service. I like ordering off the menu, and grabbing a few nigiri’s off the belt, and other sushi concoctions.
I am usually in and out within 30 minutes, and that’s with ordering fresh sushi and or hot items. They have booths to the right of the entrance, if you’re not fond of communal seating, which is to your left. We usually spend around $ 20 for the both of us, and it’s usually more than enough. Sushi Chiyo offers affordable sushi with questionable service, but as long as that aspect pertains just to the service and not the sushi, than Chiyo is A-​OK with me.

Don’t expect top quality but this is a good spot to get some cheap sushi. This rule of thumb can probably be used for any Sushi spot that has the conveyer belt but go when it’s busy that way you know you the plates are turned over more frequently.

For a sushi-​go-​round restaurant this place is where it’s at! My new favorite cheap and quick sushi restaurant. We went a month or so ago because it showed up on Unilocal’s Hot and New section and have been back two more times since. I love being able to sit right down and enjoy fresh sushi within seconds. The quality of roll is better than most conveyor belt restaurants that I’ve been to and the price is very reasonable. Two of us can stuff ourselves and leave with a $ 25 tab. Drinks add to that but I don’t mind.
They only have one local beer — the Deschutes porter –and the servers have a hard time understanding when you order it due to the language barrier. I’ve had to point to it in the fridge most times and now have a photo on my phone that I can show them.
This place is getting quite popular so if you go on a Friday-​Sunday evening it can be pretty packed. We haven’t had to wait more than 15 minutes at most though. If you’re looking for a delicious sushi go round restaurant in SE Portland this is where you want to go!

The Happy Hour special is excellent. Everything was $ 1.85 or less, and I was able to order fancy items from the menu. Definitely one of the better kaiten-​zushi in Portland, but it’s still kaiten-​zushi.

The reason for three stars is the poor selection. Both times I’ve visited it was the same. Not super busy, but the same, boring rolls circulating the belt.
I hate train sushi places that have poor selection, and it seems impossible to make a special request/​order.
I finally gave up, flagged a waitress down, ordered miso soup, and called it quits.
The fish was fresh, at least.

Five-​stars — for a sushi buffet. So yeah, this is a sushi buffet place, where you sit down and plates of different rolls rotate in front of you on a conveyor belt. It’s like being on It’s a Small World at Disneyland minus the singing robots. The place even kind of smells kind the Small World ride but I think it’s because of the refrigeration system for the fish, so I guess that can’t be avoided.
Chiyo is special because their variety is excellent and the quality of their fish is really second-​to-​none (for a sushi buffet).
It’s hard to find their menus for off-​conveyor belt items you want to order, but just know that it exists in case you want a bowl of Udon or something instead. I also highly suggest coming during happy hour, when all plates are $ 1.85!

If you like imitation crab sticks and/​or crab salad, you should definitely hit this joint up.
I agree with other reviewers, this is a better than average sushi train and totally worth $ 1.85/plate for their happy hour from 2pm-4:30pm. Look for the Yoko roll: shrimp tempura topped with spicy tuna and spicy mayo because it actually was bad ass.
We left right as they put rainbow rolls onto the train around 4:15pm. It might be worth coming in a little near the end of HH. Next time!

For a conveyor belt sushi joint, Sushi Chiyo offers better than average sushi with friendly service. The selection on the belt can be pretty limited, depending on the time of day you go and how busy they are.
Favorites: Green Dragon and Seared Salmon (you might have to order this one…) When served fresh, the seared salmon has a wonderful smoky char on it. It melts in your mouth…
TIP: Try to position yourself close to the sushi chef. As they make the rolls and set them on the belt, being first in line gives you the best choice. Otherwise, you could be left waiting, hoping, wishing that the rolls make it down to you.
Tip #2: If there is something specific you want, order it. They will make it fresh for you!
Their menu is not as expansive as most other sushi restaurants, but at these prices, you will leave satisfied!

Mediocre conveyor belt sushi at its finest! It’s not the best sushi you ever had. It’s not even the second or third best sushi you ever had. But it’s absurdly cheap. And the fish is of decent quality. And unlike some other conveyor perveyors, this place is immaculately clean. I’m a fan.

I love me some sushi. With plates ranging from $ 1.55 to $ 3.25 you’re the master of your own sushi destiny. Go between 2 and 4:30 for happy hour, and all the expensive stuff is only $ 1.85! Sure that’s an inconvenient block of time, but just think of the savings!
The sushi is above average quality for a sushi boat place. I know the fish is frozen at some point, but I have yet to bite into frozen fish.

I cannot afford Jiro but I can pretend. Sushi Chiyo affords me that dream. (See what I did there?)
Sushi and a few select menu items all reasonably priced.
The sushi was great and my favorite that I didn’t expect was the spicy salmon. I don’t like salmon but mistook it for tuna. After three plates I saw the menu to see it was salmon. Color me impressed.
