Charcoaled chicken and rushed service. This is a Japanese fast food served by Cantonese.

The«Steak Guy,» as he shall be known for all eternity, has been grilling steak, chicken and serving noodles at this location as long as I’ve lived in Portland. It could be longer, I really just don’t know. He stands out because he works hard, smiles and seems genuinely happy about life. Anyway, over the years Suki Hana’s menu has grown smaller and smaller to just a few select dishes. It is still saucy and the chicken is still somewhat fatty, however it is fast, reasonably priced mall food.

It kinda goes without saying that, well, you generally get a mediocre experience with mall food. That’s essentially what this place is, mediocre. Since it was pouring rain I took the easy way out for lunch and headed a block to the food court in Pioneer Place. This place offers your basic choice of a couple kinds of chicken(teriyaki, pineapple… maybe some other one or two choices) with some rice(white or fried) and some veggies that seem like they came out of the freezer section of the local grocery. It wasn’t horrible but the pineapple chicken was only somewhat tasty and they drowned everything in my to-go container in teriyaki sauce, making it somewhat soupy. I did manage to eat it all but it was definitely because I was hungry as hell and not a reflection of the quality. Given that there are other spots in the mall to get food, if I happen into the food court again I’ll probably opt for a different vendor.
