I would like to go but the first time I called a man answered and then hung up the phone. Second time I called and left a message, no response. I’m assuming they just don’t need anymore new clients.

Hands down one of the most exceptional hair salons in Portland. I’ve sort of made the rounds when it comes to hair salons in Portland; I tried Dosha (gasp, I know), Burnside Proper, Primp, Bliss, and I’m sure there are more. I just couldn’t find a salon or stylist that fit. I would describe what I didn’t want (too many layers too short because it would give me a mushroom head if I air dried my hair), and I would always leave with what I didn’t want.
My mom has been getting her hair cut with John for awhile, so when I was getting ready to go on vacation for New Years, I called in a ditch effort to get my hair cut before my trip. John was able to squeeze me in within the two days I had before my trip and I went in with so-​so expectations. Don’t get me wrong, my mom’s hair always looks great, but our hair is so different and I hadn’t had a good experience in awhile.
I left with just what I’ve wanted for a long time. John listened to everything I said! He knew what would look good and agreed with what I was looking for and was able to execute it perfectly. I’m so happy to find a local (within 10 blocks to my house), friendly shop to support. Great location and great stylists. Could not recommend more.

I went to SE Salon today to get my long wavy hair cut by John! It was by sheer reviews that I decided to choose him after years of bad experiences with hair cuts! I was scared to let go of my very long hair even though it was not as healthy looking anymore (I am 56). John is someone who tells it like it is… No beating around the bush! He took one look at my length and told me how he needed to cut it to bring out the curl it needed to flatter my face and to be full and healthy with little effort (I won’t even blow dry)! I was nervous but he said he would do a good cut and not take off all the length he wanted to ease me into it! Omg! He understood my hair and it’s texture and I cannot believe how full and good it looks! What a difference the right cut can do! I have been to every fancy salon and never had someone be so frank with me! Goodbye hippie hair and hello full healthy curls that better flatter my face rather than pull me down! John said I would be back to get the shorter cut he envisioned and I know he is right! I love this cut but can’t wait to see what he does next! He let me use my product as I am very fussy and know what I like! Thank you John for bringing out my face and being so direct! I would not of had the courage to shorten my hair (it is still long and sexy) had you not been so real! I found someone finally who knows how to cut my hair!!!

So, I have curly hair. This may not seem that important, unless you have curly hair and have tried to get a hip hair cut.
It’s a sad truth that many stylists are confused or intimidated by what to do with hair that changes so drastically from wet to dry. I am a reasonably young, fairly hip gal and would like a haircut that reflects that. I’m very happy to report that not only was my first hair coloring experience in 12 years a complete success. I also have a new badass haircut! This was my first time trying this salon. My mother has gone for quite some time and the fabulous job they did on her curly locks gave me the confidence to give them a shot. Thank god I did! My cut and color (with highlights) that I LOVE also happened to cost the same as I was paying just for a haircut! I am very very pleased and now officially have a new hairdresser! Yay!
