This is one of our favorite places in town, along with Isa and Tempo Dulu. The food is amazing, and the staff is among the finest I’ve experienced. The décor is simple but clean and did I mention the food? You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu and we’ve probably tried everything. Standouts are the German breakfast plate, with meats, cheeses, fantastic breads and jam. We usually get that and potato pancakes with capers and salmon and tons of coffee. And when they have their hash you do not want to miss it. It’s out of this world. Their dinners are also top notch, the schnitzel being a particular favorite. All in all, it is a terrific place that we return to time and again, both for the food and the friendly service. A note about alcohol — it’s BYOB but they will provide cork and glass service so grab your favorite beer or merlot and prepare to be blown away by the food.

Great breakfast! My boyfriend and I are on a specific diet so were limited and didn’t get to try the waffle or potato pancakes that our friends got to enjoy but the scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage were excellent. And our friends really enjoyed what they got as well. Service was very nice and it’s a quaint small little place. The only slightly awkward thing is that they don’t have a portable chip machine so they ask for you to tell them the tip you’d like to apply as opposed to writing it. I love German food so want to come back for dinner in the future.

Reservations recommended. Super cozy atmosphere. Excellent food. Tiny portions. Ordered two rounds of breakfast. Rough(but artsy) neighborhood.

Oh I love this place! My husband was not a fan, but I think he is crazy. Wonderful German food. The bread is to die for, the potato pancakes… I could go on. One of the great things is that it is also BYOB. I have been here for brunch and lunch, but have yet to do dinner. Everything I have tried on the menu has been great, so, so far I have nothing negative to report! The have great, friendly service as well which makes the overall experience so pleasant.

Had the German breakfast plate for brunch on a Sunday. Glad we made reservations for 5 people the previous day. Best breakfast I’ve had in years. Great service, very friendly. Can’t wait to go back. Highly recommended.

Simply put the food here is amazing. The atmosphere and staff are equally awe inspiring and welcoming. The food is typical German style and very homey with a gourmet flair. Cannot praise this place enough and is a definite must go in Portland. It’s location isn’t the best but I think it lends itself to cheaper prices and adds to the charm, I suppose.

My wife was speechless just moans of joy through out the meal(schwaebische spaetzle). The only negative is that we didn’t know it is a BYOB. So don’t forget your wine we won’t the next time. My meal was the schnitzel with German potato salad. Homemade desert were wonderful.

Great German food brunch. People in my party enjoyed potato pancakes, schnitzel, and spaetzel, while I had the Bergmannkiez(a bit of a continental breakfast): Fresh bread with a variety of cured meats, cheeses, and jam.(This was after a heavy meal the night before, so I was glad there was a lighter option.) The meal was very pleasant and delicious, and the staff were friendly. I felt right at home.

Despite being in a rougher part of Portland, Schulte & Herr makes you feel at home and comfy inside. I love coming here for Sunday brunch. It’s a good idea to make a reservation because it’s on the smaller side and it fills up fast! I have seen people turned away at the door and told to come back in an hour or so to get a table. The service here has been great. The waitresses are intimately familiar with the menu and have always been nice to me and my friends. My only reason for docking 1 star is that on my last visit it was hot outside and pretty much just as hot inside. There was an air conditioner but for some reason it was not turned on and it needed to be. The potato pancakes with sour cream and apple sauce are delicious. My friends love getting them with lox and although it looks excellent I’m not a fan of fish so I prefer the plain pancakes. I ordered this with a side of sausage and felt full without getting that«I ate way too much!» feeling. Perfect portion. On my second visit, I ordered the Sunday special. The Sunday special is a beef pot roast with mushroom gravy served with delicious potato dumplings and your choice of a side(three huge slices of bacon, yum!). Now that I’ve ordered this, this is what I’ll be getting every Sunday! It was a large portion, enough that I was full and had to push the plate to my friends to help me finish. The dumplings were the hero of this dish. Pro Tip: BYOB! That’s right. Bring your own bottle(or two!) of champagne with you to brunch and have mimosas! The waitresses will bring you orange juice by the half glass for you to mix! Watch as the other patrons look upon your table with green eyes ;)

I walk by this place at least once a week and think to myself«I really want potato pancakes». Enter brunch. I went with a couple friends who also have an insatiable craving for potato pancakes. We did not have a reservation but were immediately seated at this tiny mom and pop eatery. It fills up fast and many of the repeat business knows about the reservation policy so I’d suggest making one or you may be turned away. The brunch menu is very simple with some nice German offerings and other breakfast staples. On Sundays they offer an item called The Roast, which can vary. This Sunday’s was Pork Roast with mushrooms and potato dumplings. I ordered what I had been craving for months… potato panacakes. Surprise! I got them with lox, capers, radishes and cornichons. It was a beautiful spread and very delicious. The plate will run you about $ 10. Great deal for brunch! They are also BYOB so I’ll be taking full advantage of that the next time I go which will be very soon as I’ve already made reservations! I learn quick. Overall, it’s a great place to satisfy your German craving not too far from home. I look forward to many brunches here and I hope to try out their dinner menu soon. I feel a schnitzel craving coming on.

Skip the brunch here. Not really much going on other than the delicious potato pancakes. Everything else is just plain average at best. Side sausage, the bratwurst, potato salad and even the coffee was meh !!!

One of my favorite places anywhere. The potato pancakes are amazing. The split pea soup with ham is delicious, as are they rye bread with spread. My dinner tonight. I love the sides. The German Potato Salad, cucumber salad(mom food from a friend), roasted beets… The plates are also very good but it’s all about the potato pancakes, soup and bread for me. I miss Portland, Maine now that I live in Ansonia, Connecticut.

Walk into Schulte & Herr, and you will immediately be transported to your German grandmother’s kitchen.(I don’t actually have a German grandmother, but after eating here, I wish I did!) The fare is fresh, prepared with incredible care, and always impresses me. The spaetzla is a melty, golden brown dish that has been bestowed on this humble restaurant by German Gods. The emphasis is not on matching chairs and hip décor, but genuinely good food prepared and served by the owners. Dark bread, savory sausages, and house cured lox make every meal special. The food is incredibly affordable — one of the best bargains in Portland. Perfect for both dinner and brunch.

We stopped in here on a Saturday for lunch. The place is small, with a sort of eclectic décor that I didn’t care for but my partner did. I ordered the bratwurst, which came with potato salad and sauerkraut. The bratwurst was delicious, the sauerkraut on the sweeter side which I like, but I’ve resigned myself to the fact that vinegar-based potato salads are just not my thing. My partner got the potato pancakes which were cooked fritter-style(I forget the specific German word he used, which the waitress understood) and were delightfully crisp outside and tender inside. The waitress spoke to him in German, which was a nice treat. Overall, a really nice place to eat good, authentic German food.

Oh how I love German food. Potato pancakes with homemade applesauce and sour cream alongside sauteed spätzle with caramelized onions, emmenthal cheese, chives, & a fresh cucumber salad. Come on, so good! There is something about spätzle that I don’t understand that makes it that much more delicious. It’s like magic pasta. This place is so tiny and adorable that I can’t even handle it. Such a perfect date spot.

I would never think to describe german food as «light,» and yet, that’s exactly what the potato pancakes with lox here was. Delicate, while still an ample portion. Crisp pancakes and lots of capers. The service was attentive without feeling rushed, and we were seated right away while the dining room also remained just-the-right amount of full. I can’t imagine a restaurant can plan that sort of thing, but if so, kudos. I was dying to order«The Roast» because I love potato dumplings that much, but it was just too early in the day to commit to what I imagine is a very meat-heavy meal, I shall simply have to return.

Great service, great food! We made reservations for Sunday brunch. It is a small place, so definently make a reservation. On street parking. We had the potato pancakes, spatzle(a pasta like dish with cheese and onions), hash with eggs, cucumber salad, and the raisen potato bread. All so good. No bar, so Byob.

I’m a total glutton and expect the usual enormous portions. But I left so contently and pleasantly full that I forgot what it’s like to eat normal rations of food. *drops head in shame* I realized there is nothing wrong with not leaving so disgustingly full that my jeans are screaming in agony. The food was just the right mix of light and filling and salty and sour. My family moved here from Ukraine when I was four, now I know that not all European food is alike, but there was definitely a similarity to S&H and my grandmother’s kitchen. I loved the food! Maybe I’m bias because I get to eat similar dishes on a frequent basis, but that should be all the more reason to listen to me and GO.TO.Shulte&Herr. We both ordered the potato pancakes with lox, a side of home-fries, and a side of sausage. Everything definitely emanated ‘home-cooked’ and was comforting and appetizing. The potato pancakes come in three’s, they were about the size of my palm and nestled around them were delicate slices of salmon. Little chopped pickles, radish, and capers accompanied the plate, and a ramekin of what tasted like a sour-cream/horseradish concoction is what you smother the pancakes in. My only frown about S&H is the location(you get a majestic view of a rusty parking garage) and the décor(which is kind of awkward and old). The food makes it worth it though, I promise!

How can I not instantly love a place that plays Andrew Bird’s «Noble Beast» album? Just like that, Schulte & Herr, you’ve won my heart. I wouldn’t say that German food is something I frequently crave… though I am weirdly addicted to potato pancakes(topped with BOTH sour cream AND apple sauce at the SAMETIME… weird? Maybe. Delicious? #‘Chup), warm potato salad, and beets. These are dishes I can make myself however, so they aren’t necessarily something I’d go out of my way for. Unless it’s rainy and I’m feeling particular lazy… enter Schulte & Herr. No, S&H isn’t located in the most picturesque part of town, but all the better for us locals… I think it’s safe to assume that most tourists wouldn’t consider walking that part of Cumberland. The quaint restaurant is tucked behind a few trees(and so it can be hard to spot if you’re flying past), so look for the white Christmas lights adorning the window. The inside is «charming» — in my opinion the décor feels both European and like my grandmother’s house… this isn’t a bad thing. The meal started with complimentary bread(some multigrain rye concoction, I believe?) accompanied by a cream cheese/sour cream/paprika/cornichons/chive spread(which tastes EXACTLY and PERFECTLY how you would think it would). For those carboholics, you’re going to need to show a little self restraint. Had I not been in such polite company, I would have plowed through the entire basket with no regrets. Unfortunately, I couldn’t have the potato salad because it’s got bacon in it(le sigh) and I totally forgot to order beets, but I did get the potato pancakes which come three to a plate and are about three-ish inches in diameter. Accompanying them are both sour cream and apple sauce(though you can also get them with lox and horseradish sauce, and apparently that serving size is bigger). I thought the pancakes were perfectly golden and crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside; but, they were just a little under-seasoned — no worries, ’cause a healthy sprinkle of salt remedied that instantly. I’m not huge into lunch, so when I do eat it, it has to be on the«lighter» side. That being said, I have to admit… slathered with both apple sauce and sour cream, I was insanely satisfied with the portion and the price(how can you beat $ 5!!!) of the pancakes. When I AM craving German food, I have no doubt that I’ll find myself here again(especially if they continue to feed my soul with good music, too!).

I finally went to Schulte & Herr today after trying a few times in the past just to find out they were closed(they have odd hours but Sunday is the day to go). The décor is homey and makes you feel like you’re at your grandmothers house for Sunday brunch. On Sunday they offer a special Sunday roast which is out of this world. $ 12 for pot roast with mushrooms, a thick juicy sauce,(1) side of your choice, and potato dumplings. The potato dumplings are hands down, one of the best things I’ve tasted so far in 2014. They have an amazing treasure inside the potato dumpling which was maybe fried bread? I’m not sure, but I won’t question the dumplings amazingness and move on to other points in the meal. I actually didn’t have the pot roast I just siphoned off some of my boyfriend’s meal(in return for a fourth of my belgian waffle). I heard good things about the Belgian Waffle so I had to order that. It had a crispy crust and a delicious blueberry syrup on top. In some spots the blueberry syrup made the waffle a little soggy but by folding it over on top of a crisp part — the consistency was just right. I can’t wait to go back and try the potato pancakes with lox or the bergmannkiez! The coffee was bottomless and great too. They don’t have many seats but I feel like the small table set-up is great for Schulte & Herr because they can be attentive enough to you(i.e. full water glasses, coffee refills, etc.). A lot of places default to more table tops and the service ends up suffering but at Schulte & Herr you’ll feel right at home.
