Richs Volvos Only

Yeah, what everyone else said. What a sleazeball.
We verbally agreed on putting in the third row seat, then when signing the papers, he said we never talked about that and gave us a hard time. We weren’t going to leave without the 3^rd row seat, so he finally agreed to just set one in the back, but putting it in (just putting in a few bolts) would be $ 100. When we got home, he didn’t even give us all the parts for the seat.
The car was in decent shape which we expected for a 20+ year old car, but a few things were wrong and rich was going to replace. He replaced everything with such old and crappy parts that we have basically rebuilt the car a year after buying. I’m lucky my partner is a mechanic and knows how to work on Volvos because after buying from Rich, I would have been hosed if I expected to get a nice working car (and its not like it was cheap either, it was the most expensive one we looked at)
Before buying from Rich, we looked at a few craigslist volvos and one lady warned us about him. Should have listened. Avoid him at all costs.

Paid $ 99 for a Car Care Package. Ive done one of them before with another shop (Everett Street Autoworks for the record) and it was great! Pays for itself and introduces you to a shop to work on your car that you can trust (maybe). Well, not only is Rich’s one of the worst in general (untrustworthy, takes forever to do simple repairs, over charges, etc etc) but he didn’t even honor my oil changes past the FIRST ONE! So I paid 99 for ONE oil change, I paid $ 100 for a radiator flush (which he quoted me at less, but took my statement that he could ‘do other work up to $ 100′ as meaning that he could do NO other work and just charge extra for the radiator flush, oops my bad for not catching that one at the time) and now NO OIL CHANGES and the rest of the package is useless to me if I have no interest in ever seeing this guys face again.
Oh, and top of that he borderline sexually assaulted me when I did get an oil change.

if you love your volvo, do not under any circumstances go there, you will be ripped off at the least, your car damaged for sure! sleazy, liar with no morals, or scruples is a better description! the car mechanic you heard tales of and could never believe existed! than after you get free, bills will keep coming. if you want to use him, why not just drive your car over a cliff?
same results, what is «fixed» is just another broken thing needing to be replaced by a decent mechanic. wrecking yards are better for parts as is the internet. save yourself the headache, read all the reviews and use any other volvo mechanic first.

This guy took a shit in the tailpipe and then proceeded to punch my firstborn claiming that «Gary Busey has a flourishing acting career» I mean I wouldn’t say it was flourishing by any means. 3 stars.

Rich is a very sleazy guy who will say anything and promise everything, but try to have him put it in writing and you’ll be out of luck. I really don’t know how he can sleep at night, and I am AMAZED to see that he is still in business after all of these years. Rich’s Volvos Only (He changes the name of his business every few years because of so many bad reviews and dissatisfied customers) is THE WORST.
I finally found Alamo Automotive and have been with them for years. Read their reviews, they are one of the best Volvo shops in Portland.

it was years ago but still wanted to leave feedback about this crook. he buys Volvos with major issues and resells them without doing anything to fix them! seriously, you will get screwed so badly if you buy a car from this guy. can’t imagine the bad karma he has. maybe he’s changed his ways recently, but judging by these reviews it sounds like not! also my current Volvo mechanic has mentioned him as someone to avoid buying a car from, because he works on the cars people buy at Rich’s which immediately require service! i learned my lesson the hard way, maybe you don’t have to.

I will not go back to this gentleman after my coupon expires. He worked on my Pontiac vibe for a month. I had to bring it in multiple times after I picked it up. He also took my title as a payment till I paid him off, but then he lost my title to my car and it took him a month to find it. Btw it’s a Tennessee title.

same ol’ story. met rich, liked him, trusted him. he gave me a story about his son loving the car i was looking at and driving it around before it was for sale. we talked about the 2005 s40 i used to have and he said that that was the worst year/​model volvo ever. we also talked about «not knowing what you get at a car auction»… rich let my friend and me test drive it/​take it to lunch without so much even learning my last name.
i was happy buying a more «responsible» car! it needed new tires and he would have replaced them but they still had a little life so he knocked off $ 400 (less than the cost of new tires, i know) and rotated them. they were obviously wearing funny though and when my friend asked about it, rich basically said «theyre fine». the check engine light was on but he said it just needed an oil change and it would be done right away. sold. they even gave me a warranty on the engine/​transmission/​drive train even though the original sign said «as-​is». awesome! and i would be on my way to work just in time!
fast forward two hours after the paperwork was done to me getting my shift covered at work and wandering between sitting in the uncomfortable and unwelcoming lobby and standing out in the rain at the garage entrance watching everyone dawdle around my car and the other cars there. im not the kind of person that complains or asks for a status update every two minutes and i figured that since no one was even paying attention to me, something «must» be happening in there! finally, someone tells me itll just be a lttle longer, but nothing else. then, while sitting in the lobby, a delivery dude brings a case of oil! oh, thanks guys, you didnt want to tell me you were OUT OF THE OIL FOR MY QUICK OIL CHANGE? im pretty sure that literally, the second they had my money i was just a nuisance.
a month later, the check engine light comes back on. and the passenger door stops opening from the outside. it was the holidays, though, and i lost track of time since neither issue seemed very pressing…
a week ago the check engine light went back off. great!
yesterday, the car started acting up. long story short, had car towed to a different mechanic (
… — thankfully i read the reviews on this place before taking it back, thinking he might be more willing to help since i bought it there) and it was out of gas… so i guess the gas gauge doesnt work?
during their diagnostics, they found $ 2000 in repairs needed, including the tires and the passenger door latch, left and right front control arms (the right is very bad!) and my bevel gear assembly is leaking; a new one will run me approx $ 675!
guess we should have driven this car to another mechanic instead of lunch, huh?
UPDATE: car continues to have problems, put over $ 3,000 of work in it, replacing everything including a broken door lock, catalytic converter, tires, radiator, etc. when about 14 months later my boyfriend and i get stranded in rainier washington on valentines day because the transmission died. we donated the car to the feral cat coalition and they auctioned it off for about $ 800. since rich buys his volvos at auctions, i wouldnt be surprised if it ended up back in rich’s hands for some mickey mouse fix it job that makes it run long enough for you to take it around the block and back to put some money in his hand.

despite several negative reviews Rich has always been helpful and knows my V70 like the back of his hand. other employees have been testy and unnecessarily sharp but Rich is solid and knows how to treat a Volvo right.

Rich is completely dishonest. When you look up «used car dealer» in the dictionary, his picture shows up.
The car he sold me had a broken odometer, which he never disclosed. I therefor have no idea how many miles the car actually had.
he promised that the AC worked — it didn’t.
If you do just a few minutes research on this shop, you’ll see that Rich’s primary business is in screwing people.
Go some where else.

I recently purchased a car from a person on Craigslist, only to find out that they are an affiliate of Volvo’s Only and in the business of selling cars that Volvo’s Only have put band-​aide repairs on in hoped that after the car is purchased they will come back by referral to Volvo’s Only for repairs.
When I purchased the car, the title was in Rich Standau’s name, the seller I was dealing with was named Andrew (don’t have last name now because I sent it in with the registration paperwork). Andrew plead some sob story as to why this was the case, and I went with it because I was simply drained from dealing with the situation.
Long story short, this mechanic is NOT TO BE TRUSTED! A friend of mine purchased a volvo from Andrew as well, which we realized after 2 months. Both of our cars need work to be drivable, mine over $ 2,300 and his over $ 4,000. The title on both were in Rich’s name, and both were sold by a chipmunk-​y short statured man named Andrew who wanted to meet at Glendoveer Gold Course.
Andrew, of course, referred us to his «amazing» mechanic, claiming he would give us a «friend discount», which was none other than Volvo’s Only. Sparing the minor details, I would plea that you NEVER get your car worked on by this mechanic, and ALWAYS get your car inspected before purchasing!

This is where your Volvo will go to die, and where dead Volvos are made to appear living and sold as such.
The mechanics are inattentive at best, and dangerous at worst. Parts will be missing or improperly installed, the owner (Rich Standau) is difficult to work with, d and NONE of the vehicles they have «for sale» are in drivable condition.
My car has been back several times to repair the same issue and I have been charged for repairs that were either not done or done improperly. The car was never, not once, ready on time and was kept there for several weeks at one point.
DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE PEOPLE
If you are planning to buy a car here, I suggest going somewhere else or having a long talk with your current car and seeing if you can’t find some shred of your once great relationship. Don’t let the car you once loved die here.
