This place is a total disaster of a club — I went for a the Dropping Gems collective’s pre Halloween show, had a drink and danced a bit until One of the apparently drunken Bartenders cut off one of the collective’s Djs twenty minutes into her one hour set around one in the morning because he was«loosing money» while she was playing. There were plenty of people listening and dancing, but the headliner had already played and some people filed out before she even began. Why would you book someone you’ve heard and booked before and then cut them off while people are dancing and enjoying the music? Also, it was a party put on by dropping gems! The bartender became aggressive when i responded to him and later used trans phobic language in the direction of the DJ(who is a woman who is also trans gender) who was acting somewhat passively about the entire thing(Although I admit myself and others were heated) I would recommend no one ever, ever play or patronize this place for any reason — and certainly all queer folks and allies avoid like the plague. There are plenty of other great, respectful venues and clubs to play The bartender/booker’s use of trans phobic language towards a woman and generally aggressive nature is reason enough.

Great bartenders, really nice outdoor seating and the music was way better than this spaces previous incarnation.

It’s taken me a long time to sort out my complicated feelings about this place. It seems like such a weird place — fairly well laid out, good lighting, friendly bartenders, but it’s perpetually empty(except for my last two visits!) It’s located about a block from Portland Rock Gym, which means it’s become the go-to bar for post-climbing libations. This also means that I can be found here at least twice a week. High points? — It’s almost always empty. — $ 2 beers on Tuesdays(with a small but decent tap selection) — $ 2 – 3 off cocktails on Thursday — As evidenced by the previous point: laid-back bartenders — Crazy art(check out the giant mural of dead rock stars) Low points? — Open mic last Tuesday. Save for the beatboxer backed by a trumpet player, it was an aural trainwreck that made me drink a lot faster than I would have. — Absolutely bizarre mix of clientele(none of whom I could ever picture talking to). During open mic my friend remarked that they saw the entire American Eagle catalog lineup seated behind us, next to the hipster quotient and a dude in a Cosby sweater. For the most part, though, I’ve come to love this place. They deal with us getting loud, coming in covered in climbing chalk, and pushing tables together to spread out maps of Nepal for trek-planning purposes.

Seemed like a nice enough place, but the owner doesn’t respect paying customers enough not to jerk them around. Avoid this place like the plague.

this place is fun, in a good location and in an awesome building! the staff there– bartenders, cook(sam) and manager(ashley) were great to work with– patient and accommodating. so why did i give it only 3 stars? the owner does not seem to understand what is in the best interest of his continued business among certain communities and that when a group rents out the space for a private event, there may be certain standards and lifestyle choices that should not only be honored and adhered to for that event, but also respected and considered when making any decisions directly involving that event. so good for a drink after a long day? maybe good for a group to celebrate a HUGE accomplishment? aside from the staff(previously mentioned), no. it’s too bad really, because i want to be able to give this place 5 stars but after an experience tonight, i can not do so.

We kind of stumbled into this place and ended up face to face with some of the most killer beats we heard in Portland one weekend(not that we heard a lot of beats, but whatever). Great music(it was a DJ and live drummer duo whose name I already forgot), hipsters dancing, Pabst tall boys(but I guess that’s standard for Portland) and cool, vaulted layout to the place.

Popped in with a friend for a drink before dinner. It was OK and conveniently located. The interior is nice but I like The Chesterfield better. The hard bench seating is a little unconfortable but the drinks solid and wait staff very attentive.

The Old Chesterfield. I like it! Good drinks, good music, good space. The owner/bartender is a personable guy, the crowd isn’t really as obnoxious as I thought it’d be, and I made up my own drink which was yummy: Hot monkey pepper vodka, triple sec, and passion fruit juice shaken and served in a sugar-rimmed glass. I drank too much and danced too much and generally had a blast.
