PSU Bike Hub

I went in today to try and get fitted for a helmet. After admitting I had no idea what to look for and what fit would be appropriate the consultant didn’t bother to help. She gave me a quick run through and when I explained to her I still had no idea what to look for she became annoyed and cold. Unfortunately this location is very convenient for me, but I don’t think I will be going back. I felt belittled and was treated as an annoyance.

This place is awesome. I took advantage of their Winter overhaul special and just brought my road bike in the AM and it was ready later that same day. No appointment, super-​fast turnaround. They let me pick out a new handlebar tape and installed, all included with the tune-​up/​overhaul charge.
I imagine they get pretty busy so the sooner you drop your bike off, the faster you’ll get it back. Emily knew her stuff and I I rode into work today and the bike shifts so crisply now.
I’ll be definitely going there from now on because their service is great and I trust their knowledge.

PSU Bike Exchange provides good quality Linus commuter bikes at great rates: $ 15 for a ½ day; $ 25 for a full day; and just $ 60 for a week. This includes a brain bucket and lock, plus all bikes have a basket and/​or rear rack. The shop also has great gear. Members get awesome discounts, e.g., Chrome Storm biking sneakers that retail for $ 105 sell for $ 84. The catch is that membership is open only to PSU faculty, staff and alumni. The public can buy, but at full retail or sale, not at the generous member discount. That left me out of luck. When I was in a couple of weeks ago they were having a fire sale on helmets. $ 60 Giro were going for $ 25. And they have an excellent assortment of accessories for rabid cyclists like me. Thanks to Cole for all of his help.
I’d like to see hybrid and road bike rental options, but that’s not really their mission.

This place is large with lots of yellow and wood tones. It looks very sterile and little to no real personality. It’s like the Red Robins of breweries/​eateries. What this place does have going is the large selection of craft beers. Whether this is the best selection in the city or not I cannot comment on ’cause the guy I am dating and I are from Vancouver where craft beer is not really a thing, therefore, coming to Portland we get excited about craft beer of any kind. We didn’t stay and dine but rather took a 4 pack variety pack to drink later at the hotel. The price was very reasonable at $ 19 no tax.

Apparently this is the 1^st review of PSU Bike Hub, which surprises me since it’s been open about 1.5 years. Another surprise: Unilocal does not have a category for bicycles, not even repair/​maintenance, for bike-​friendly Portland.
I took 2 bikes here to examine and tune up. One was bought in the late 1980’s but had mostly alloy parts and was in decent condition, a Shimano racing/​road bike. The other was a mountain bike given to me by a friend some years back, also in passable condition. I’ve been unemployed for some time, so had been looking for a bike service shop with reasonable prices. My friend Tim P., a PSU student, recommended PSU Bike Hub.
The shop caters mainly to PSU students and staff, but also serves the general public. PSU students & staff can be members of the store after paying $ 30 a year or $ 15 per term, and receive 20% discount off products and services. Members also get access to the tools, workspace and resources of the Bike Hub, guided repair instruction, and free invitations to Bike Hub workshops and seminars.
Clint Culpepper, PSU Bike Hub’s manager, was welcoming, knowledgeable and helpful. I told him my situation and he assured me that they would do their best to fix the essentials while minimizing cost. After I picked up the first tuned bike, he kindly let me leave the other in the store for extra time so that I could pay later. The shop’s rates for the general public are still very reasonable: $ 65 for a full tune up, and $ 30 for a safety check.
The lead mechanic, Dan Penner, tuned both of my bikes. My mountain bike only needed a safety check, and a replaced cable. I bought a Frog lamp for $ 10. Fortunately, my 20+ year old Shimano racer only required new brakes (front & back), and brake cables/​housing as new parts, although I decided to buy new pedals, a new tube, and a patch kit just in case. Dan was knowledgeable and patient, helping me to pick my parts, and answering my many questions. Although Dan worked more on the Shimano than on the mountain bike, I was only charged for a safety check and new parts, and Dan kindly installed a new REI saddle I had brought, w/​o charge. The other staff were also friendly and helpful — Brody adjusted my saddle after I left the store and it was causing cramping.
My bikes are performing well so far, although my 20+ year old bike creaks a little, understandably, when I climb up steep hills. You can be sure that I will be a returning customer. I have already been recommending PSU Bike Hub to my friends and contacts before today, and will continue doing so. I will become a member if/​when I become either a student or staff of PSU! :-) Check out their web site!
