Powell Boulevard Veterinary Clinic

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Powell Blvd Vet! Dr. Ault (and the entire staff) were so kind, thorough, and gentle with my poor, sick pup. Dr. Ault took time to build rapport with my dog and see how my little guy was doing before recommending treatments. He explained his recommendations well, patiently answered many questions, and gave several options to treatment pursue.
I’ve never felt as welcomed or supported in my decision-​making at a veterinary office. The level of thoughtful care was superb. My dog and I both left feeling cared for, with my questions answers, and a bill a third the size of the «inexpensive» vet I typically see. I cannot imagine taking my dog anywhere else now — such high quality care and support during what can be such a emotional time. Yay Dr. Ault!

We began visiting Powell Veterinary Clinic a few months ago. We moved because our previous vet did not offer weekend hours. We should have moved over years ago.
We came in for what we thought was something minor, only to discivery that our sweet greyhound had cancer and only a short time to live. We visited with Dr. Drennan twice and she was great about following up with phone calls to check in on us, knowing that the news was devistating and tragic to our family.
When the time came to euthanize our boy, they were able to come to our home for the procedure, which made the sad experience a little more bearable. Dr. Felton and a tech took care of everything including making sure he body was safely transported to where he would be creamated.
I can’t say enough nice things about the staff at Powell Veterinary. The loss of our furry family member was horrible, but the one shining light was the staff. We will be brining all of our pets to Powell from now on.

My dog was seizing, throwing up and flopping around. It was quite terrifying. I didn’t know at the time but he was having a seizure. This was the closest vet so I rushed him in and the team immediately took him in the back to stabilize and get his vitals. I was so rushed to get him to the vet that I didn’t even put on my shoes. Everyone was so kind. They brought me tissues and water. From the front desk to the vet techs to the doctor I received exceptional customer service and my dog received exceptional care. They are not my primary care provider for my dog so they even let me give his regular vet a call. They put the pet and client first and it really showed in how they cared for my dog and how well they treated me. I would highly recommend this veterinary care practice to anyone looking for a good veterinarian. I will be forever grateful to them.

This is the first time I’ve offered a review on Unilocal… ever. This is how strongly I feel about giving positive feedback for Powell Blvd Vet Clinic. Twice now they’ve made time to see my aging cat, Rose, when they really didn’t have time in their schedule. The first time was New Year’s Eve a couple years ago. Both during these more urgent times, and when I’ve got a scheduled appointment, they truly take the time to be careful, deliberate, nurturing, and creative with treatment. I leave feeling like the doctor and staff all genuinely care about my kitty. The office is actually a little out of the way for me, but I switched to a vet closer to home and didn’t have nearly as much of a positive experience, so switched back. It’d been a year, but they still remembered Rose. The waiting room is spacious and tranquil. Staff are warm and helpful from start to finish. Prices are reasonable, and they do an excellent job of keeping you informed before proceeding with costly procedures. Most recently, they even charged me LESS than the price they originally quoted. They’re open 7 days a week. The list could go on and on. Go here.

Been a client here for three pets and for several years. The staff are wonderful from front to back. They treated each of my pets for many health issues and into old age. Dr. Felton and Dr. Ault and Dr. Lathrop have been great with back issues, chronic bronchial problems and the standard ear infections. You can’t go wrong here.

This rating is for the friendly, caring staff, but ESPECIALLY for Dr. Felton, who’s been our vet for nearly 10 years. 3 cats, 3 dogs (not all at the same time!). Dr. Felton is the most authentic person I have ever met. She sincerely cares about you, and your animals. She never tries to up-​sell, and is always straight with you. A few years ago, our Westie tore his ACL, at the same time, we were worried about his teeth (he was 13 at the time). She did not judge us for choosing to spend the money on his teeth/​extractions — She was honest and said at his age, even with surgery, he was still going to get arthritis in that leg and would never fully regain his mobility. Yesterday, we had to put our 14 year old Shi Tzu to sleep due to congestive heart failure. Dr. Felton made time to be with us, there was no rushing, she made all of us feel important and cared for, just like she always has. I think being a Vet must be one of the hardest jobs in the world. Everyone in my family thinks Dr. Felton is the greatest Vet in the world. We love you, we mean it.

We love our vet! Our dogs love it here. Fortunately they don’t have to visit often, but hey that’s how it goes. We’d recommend them to anyone.

I’ve been taking my dog here for several years now and he’s always quite excited when we show up. Super friendly and clean. They also keep records online and have a great organizational system. Definitely recommended!
⁴⁄₅ Because they are definitely a little more expensive than the average vet but make up for it with stellar service. Would give a 4.5 if possible.

My dog has never had a problem at any vet but this one. I brought my dog in for an ear infection and the veterinarian wasn’t even able to look at his ear and requested that he be put under in order for her to take a look at it… My dog is extremely friendly but gets nervous at the vet. the techs were great and comforted my dog but the veterinarian never greeted my dog or pet him, she immediately took him from the room to look at him without letting him smell her first, she couldn’t muzzle him and so I had to, and with the muzzle on she still was too afraid to touch my dog and look at his ear. My vets back in Utah have all been able to give my dogs shots perfectly fine and have never commented on my dogs nervousness yet this vet was incapable of touching my dogs ear and acted as though he was vicious and couldn’t be handled. If a vet can’t handle an animal who can? I also remember as a puppy her requesting anxiety pills for my dog to take to check ups. I will never go back to this clinic.

The five stars is for Dr. Drennen. She is young and a relatively new vet, but I love her. She isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty (quite literally) and handles my dog who is terrified of the vet really well. She genuinely cares about my pets. I never feel rushed or dismissed. She answers all my questions even when I have a million of them. Dr. Drennen is amazing with my dog who is extremely terrified of the vet and has displayed some fear aggression (snarls). She’s so gentle and calming and has never once had to muzzle him even though she’s needed to do some pretty invasive procedures on him.
I have had some less than stellar visits with other vets at Powell BLVD, but since we started seeing Dr. Drennen, everything has been wonderful.

I chose Powell Blvd Vet Clinic back in 2002 because I lived close to there and it was convenient for me and my 2 yr old black lab, Dean. Over the years, Dean developed more and more issues and we became regulars there, especially when he joined their senior wellness program. Dr Felton there proved to be an invaluable asset to us.
When he neared the end of his 13 years, she was direct and honest with us while remaining compassionate. She informed us of our options as he began to have internal organ failure. She said that surgery was an option but he may not survive it and it would only give him a few more months, during which he would be in pain. She didn’t try to pressure me into any expensive options and gave me a referral to a great agency that did home euthanasia services. After he passed, they made a donation to a vet school in his name.
So, when I got my new girl, Ava, there was no question as to where I was going to take her. At the time, it wasn’t the closest or most convenient location but I wouldn’t trust anyone else with our animals.

This is being written a few months after my appointment because I was too sensitive to write about it for a while.
I honestly have no idea how or why this place has good reviews (I am new to the area and this clinic has some of the highest ratings in southeast Portland, so naturally I thought my cat would be in good hands).
My cat had been showing signs of urinary discomfort– crying when going to the bathroom, urinating outside of the litter box, etc. This is a common problem for male tabbies. I brought him in, a little worried but not yet desperate. At first, they seemed friendly and caring, offering bottled water and kind words from the front desk. The first vet emptied his bladder, gave him subcutaneous fluids and prescribed him a painkiller and a muscle relaxer and told me to bring him back in if he was still displaying symptoms. Fortunately, the first bill was just over $ 200. My partner brought my cat in again while I was at work because he was still peeing in the house and meowing. About an hour later, he called me completely distraught and told me to come to the vet as soon as I could. I left work and when I got there, there was a different woman attending to him. She had coldly told my partner that they would need $ 1,500 up front to do the procedure (72 hour catheterizing/​draining crystals in the bladder) or he would die. She posed it as an incredibly dire situation, threatening that if we didn’t do something immediately we would either have to put him to sleep or take him to the animal shelter, where they might «take pity on him» and «decide his case is important,» but that there were a lot of animals who might get chosen instead and that we could never adopt him again. I have had this cat for 7 years, he’s my baby. While I was sobbing because I had only $ 700 in my bank account and I offered that as a down payment, they told me that because I was a new patient, I would have to pay the amount in full. This is not unreasonable, as they probably have received incomplete payments in the past. What bothered me is their complete disregard for my pet’s life and how cold and hurtful it is to say «if you don’t pay now, your pet will die.»
If it hadn’t been for a manager at work who told me about a local pet insurance company (I will not list it, because this is about the veterinary office and not a PSA for the company) I would be completely lost. When I mentioned the insurance company to the vet and the front desk, they attempted to dissuade me from choosing that option by telling me the company «had a history» with being unsatisfactory.
That could not be further from the truth. When I took my cat to the pet insurance’s vet, he depressed his bladder and was able to produce urine (my cat had been urinating small amounts this entire time) which meant his urethra was only partially blocked. Which Powell Boulevard Veterinary Clinic must have recognized, but said nothing about. The new vet said the procedure was unnecessary at this point and that it was actually more invasive than need be, confirming that Powell Boulevard’s diagnosis had been made to sound a lot more serious than the actual condition. The vet told us that the specific procedure is only necessary in much more serious situations, and that my cat was actually doing relatively well. He put my cat on a prescription diet, told us to keep an eye on him with the muscle relaxers and pain relief and said these things usually go away on their own. Surprise, in two days my baby was fine– no bloating, no crying, no urinating outside of the litter box. Three months later, he is still healthy as can be.
Bottom line: This clinic takes advantage of distraught people in a time of need, they will do ANYTHING to convince you to stay so they can get all of your money– even giving a false prognosis about your pet and threatening his/​her death otherwise.

This review is specifically for Powell Blvd’s new location on Milwaukie, although I have also been to the original location for my previous and current cat, and found them to be solid.
My boyfriend and I are first-​time dog companions to a lovely puppy, Wally, who we adopted through OHS about a month and a half ago. After boarding him for a weekend at a reputable facility, we picked him up on Monday to find that something was obviously wrong with him. When our normal vet had no time to see Wally on an emergency basis that day, I called Powell Boulevard. The woman I spoke on the phone with was very kind, and helped us book an appointment for later that afternoon.
When we arrived, the facilities were extremely clean, did not smell bad, and were well-​stocked with merchandise as well as complimentary treats on the counter. We met with Dr. Welker. Unlike many other vets offices I’ve been to in Portland, there was no wait beyond what it took to fill out the initial paperwork. Dr. Welker was fantastic — kind, friendly, and above all else showed so much care for Wally. I could tell that she is a true animal lover and went above and beyond to show him some much-​needed love and make sure he was comfortable throughout the visit.
Thankfully our dog turned out to be very dehydrated but otherwise fine. He had some subcutaneous fluids and anti-​nausea meds and we went on our way. Prices for his x-​rays and treatment were fair — not cheap, but I would not expect service at this level to be cheaper than the norm. Dr. Welker personally called me to follow up this afternoon, and I so appreciated how she went above and beyond to make sure our little buddy was doing better. A+ all around! I’m sure we will be bringing Wally back for a check-​up when he is next due.

My first visit to Powell Veterinary with my two dogs was nothing short of perfect. Everyone is engaging, helpful and pleasant. Dr Gummer was very thorough and informative. What I really liked about Powell Veterinary was that they didn’t spend a bunch of time trying to sell you services like other Veterinaries that are associated with conglomerates do. I left the appointment feeling like I was a worthy pet owner not having to turn down services which are constantly being thrown out that the pet owner should do.
I’m real glad I found them.

Very good, very caring. Every vet we’ve seen has been smart, compassionate, and helpful, especially to our senior cat, who has several unusual health problems. The support staff is organized and caring; the front desk workers and vet assistants are top-​of-​the-​line. Practice is clean and bright; also, we especially like that they’re open till 7 pm on weekdays and have Saturday hours.

I’ve had Miss Daisy for 4 years and have never been pleased with out vet care– until now! They are friendly, professional, very passionate about pets and people. Excellent care, we’re so happy to have stumbled upon them!

Absolutely fantastic experience. I met with Dr. Welker & Tech Assistant Katie and I couldn’t have been more satisfied with the visit. As a new pet owner, I came in with a boat load of questions and left feeling like they had resolved any concerns I had carried in with me through the door. Never felt rushed at any moment. From the receptionists to the folks handling my puppy, you can tell this is a place that has a genuine love for animals. I’ll be back.

I took Harriet in today for her surgery. The intake chart had her name highlighted in pink, with hearts drawn next to it, and when I picked her up today they gave me a goodie bag with treats for her and chocolates and a water bottle for me. That pretty much says it all.
But aside from those, they were very considerate in all the ways. They stuck to the original estimate (which included a pre-​surgery visit for bloodwork, included in total cost). Dr. Welker called post-​surgery to let me know everything went ok, and when I picked her up the receptionists were kind and helpful (despite about 7 dogs in the lobby at 4pm for pickup/​dropoff, etc). The technician gave me instructions for follow up care, and she’s in very good shape. I have zero complaints, and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a vet in the SE.

I just recently moved to Portland and found this veterinarian on Unilocal based on the closest location to our house. I absolutely totally scored with choosing Powell Boulevard Veterinary Clinic. They are AMAZING.
My dog had really really bad breath and needed dental surgery. My vet at my old home town quoted me $ 1600.00 minimum and honestly, after paying off my kids braces with another kid needing them, I chose to put it off until we moved to Portland… and I am so glad I did.
Each person you deal with at PBVC are so wonderful and warm. I met with Dr. Eddy who made sure my dog was healthy enough to handle this sort of surgery and within one weeks time, all reports came back as positive and she had several teeth pulled today. The cost was less than $ 1000. and as much as that seems like a lot, my poor dog had A LOT that needed to be done to fix her mouth. I am pretty sure that I would have paid double where I lived before.
Before I left, they gave me a «goody bag» that was filled with things for Lily and for me! So thoughtful. Their customer service is out of this world and the care my dog received was even better. I HIGHLY recommend this business and wish everyone who had an animal could get this kind of service.

I’ve had my dog for almost 9 years now, and I’ve been blessed with her not really needing any full on vet visits… until recently when she developed a limp.
Having only taken Sable to a vet once to get some flea medicine 9 years ago I decided to come back to the same place, the Powell Veterinary clinic. They aren’t event remotely close to me, but I didn’t want to do the new dog thing and brought her here.
I must say I was BLOWN away with the level of care here. Infact, the level of care here was so good even –I– was jealous at how amazing the care here is. I brought sable in for a limping back paw, and they decided to give her a full checkup. They checked all of her legs and paws for a full range of moton, felt for any tumors. .the whole nine yards! I had a bunch of questions. 9 years without needing a vet results in lots of little things coming up.
Overall I must say this vet is so friggen amazing that even HUMAN doctors could learn a thing or six hundred from this office! They stay open late to accommodate people with jobs, they are great to communicate with, they use EMAIL and they are just downright awesome!
