My husband and I are neither vegan nor gluten free. We stumbled in here on accident thinking it was a regular bakery. We dug in to our desserts and were both wondering why they were gritty and tasted like earth balance and/or coconut oil. Once we realized our mistake it made a lot of sense. I guess it would be a good substitute for the real thing if your diet was restricted but I will not be returning.

The people were nice and friendly. The restaurant was clean. However, there was no signage or advertising that this was a vegan and gluten free bakery. The food was mediocre and if you are not vegan be prepared for the fake cheese and other odd tasting food combinations.

I received a care package of Petunia’s Salted Double Chocolate Chunk Cookies from a friend. My son is allergic to nuts, dairy and eggs. I specifically called the bakery asking if there were nuts in the cookie. The woman on the phone assured me that there were no nuts. My son ate the cookie for dessert and immediately had an anaphylactic reaction. He threw up, struggled to breathe and I quickly administered the epi-pen. After two hours at the ER with steroids, anti nausea medicine and allergy medicine, my son is fine, thankfully. I called Petunia’s again the next day to ask what might be in that cookie. The woman on the phone said there are no nuts but there is «cashew butter.» Do you think it would be good to list this on the website or to have had informed me on the phone the other day when I called before the cookie consumption? The woman on the phone was very kind, apologized profusely and said the owner would call me immediately; because they take this very seriously and have been«considering» listing life threatening allergens. The owner never called me. I guess she doesn’t take it seriously. My son went to the ER because they did not give me the correct answer when I called the first time and also do not list it on their website.

We had no idea we were walking into a gluten-free and vegan shop and we were so impressed that the mixed berry pie we had tasted delicious! Really adorable shop and I loved the mason jar mixes. I missed some real cream for my coffee but overall a good place to stop for some sweets!

The best gluten-free cakes and cupcakes I have had in years. My husband surprised me on my birthday with cakes from Petunias. We were in town visiting so we were not familiar with what’s available in Portland, but I am so happy he chose Petunias. He got me a slice of german chocolate cake as well as strawberry cake. He also got me a cupcake with maple espresso frosting. All were very moist, extremely fresh and packed with flavor. The strawberry cake tasted more like coconut cake with fresh strawberries. It reminded me of a vegan coconut cake I use to get at a juice bar that is no longer around in Seattle. I have craved that cake for years. My husband who can eat gluten was blown away as well. Thank you Petunias for such awesomeness.

$ 7.99 for a slice of Marionberry cheesecake pie. That’s way too pricey. That’s on par with Cheesecake Factory, where the portions are bigger and they specialize in cheesecake. Their credit card machine was not working. They had meager selections at the end of day, which is understandable. Petunia is not the owner’s name but the pig on top of the employees only door. The interior has the brick and high ceilings and the furnishings and style are modern and feminine. A lot of thought was put into the interior but the prices are a bit high.

Adorably bright bakery with tasty and SWEET gluten free vegan treats. Staff was very friendly and clearly passionate about what they do. I gave four stars because one of my treats was just a bit too sweet, even for my raging sweet tooth.

A friend and I discovered Petunia’s while out one night in Portland. They had booze and dessert so basically we were sold. It was a pleasant discovery to find out everything was gluten free, as my friend cannot eat gluten. Everything is also vegan. I had a cookie dough cupcake that was frosted with actually cookie dough. The cupcake itself was delicious, even more so considering the ingredient restrictions. The cookie dough had a little bit of a courser than usual texture, but nothing too bad. It tastes almost as if they used a courser sugar than the«norm», so it was more little specs of texture instead of the whole thing being very course. I really enjoyed it and would happily eat it again-even though I personally have no dietary restrictions. The cocktails were great and the employees were very friendly. The décor was cute and feminine. There were a couple other groups here enjoying the evening together but I could also see this place being great to study a little earlier in the evening.

Pretty good for a vegan and gluten-free bakery. I picked up a variety of cakes and cookies. Some items I picked up were delicious and moist(cakes), and some were a little dry and crumbly(cookies and bars). It’s a cute place, and welcoming atmosphere to sit down and have a coffee with your dessert, but until I can really develop a taste for gluten-free items, I’ll probably stick with the buttery, wheaty stuff.

I DON’T EVENFEELBADABOUTIT! I had a huge piece of black and white cake one time, and a turtle cheesecake, and a coconut raspberry cake, and you bet I’ll be back to add to this list. Some people are scared away by the«vegan» or «gluten-free» labels on food because they think that also means sacrificing quality and flavor, so I’m glad they don’t have huge flashing lights with those words because it forces people to try it, love it, and then realize it is possible to have some of the best baked goods be cruelty-free. So on that note, I am happily going down the menu and trying everything they have to offer and I don’t feel bad about stuffing my face one bit!

I wouldn’t have realized that these desserts were vegan if my friend hadn’t told me. The desserts here taste like regular, non-vegan delicious treats. We wanted to try the strawberry rhubarb pie that Salt & Straw uses in their ice cream, but they didn’t have any that day, so we got the raspberry walnut streusel instead. It was just the right amount of sweet, and also a bit healthy-seeming with the granola on top. The crust was a bit too hard though. The salted caramel cookie bar was sinfully good. Really sweet and caramelly.

Two stars because as Unilocal puts it, «Meh. I’ve experienced better.» I don’t identify as vegan and I don’t have a gluten intolerance. I think food meant for human consumption should taste good. I picked up a pecan sticky bun after a staff member raved about it and had to stop after two bites. It was overly sweetened and the texture was dense and gross. In terms of flavor per calorie, this was not worth it. A few weeks later, I purchased a cupcake for a work colleague; it was packaged in an upside down plastic cup with lid. Looked awful and traveled even worse back to my office. If you’re vegan and don’t like gluten, by all means try this place. You’ll probably love it. But if you don’t «need» this in your life, save yourself the trip and $$. :)

I was very pleased. I ordered the biscuits and gravy and a pumpkin cupcake with maple icing. I love that it’s gluten free and vegetarian. I’m not a big biscuit fan so that probably affected my opinion of the biscuits a little bit, but I love gravy and this gravy was great. The biscuits were good. I think if I had the gravy over potatoes or something it would have been heaven. The cupcake was yummy. I came on my lunch break and they brought my food out almost immediately. You pay at the counter and bus your own table. All of these facts make this a quick place to go when you’re short on time. The slogan is «The best darn baked goods you’ve ever had. They just happen to be gluten-free.» I would say that isn’t true, but it’s still really good, especially for gluten-free AND vegetarian. I’ve never even seen somewhere serve gluten free and vegetarian gravy. I’ll definitely return soon. Edit: I went back and ordered extra gravy and it made it AMAZING. I got the thin min brownie this time, too, and was amazed. If you’re gf or vegan and miss gravy or thin mints, come satiate your craving here…

Gluten got you down, better get to Petunia’s! What a great find. Met up with some friends here for my first visit, and I was impressed. It’s just not an easy sell even in Portland to do vegan and gluten free, but they make everything shine here. Great staff who are glad to answer questions, super clean café, and just a great atmosphere. Almost an upscale 1950’s feel to it. It was a hard choice, so many great options, but I went with a piece of lemon cake with a lime frosting. Very nicely decorated on a big plate, the huge piece of cake was a winner. At first I thought, this better be something for $ 8, and while everything seems to be a little pricey, you have to remember you are in a specialty shop paying for specially made items that cost a lot to make and a lot of time to prepare. Turns out I wouldn’t have had a clue my cake was gluten free, let alone vegan. So freaking good! The café serves up some dinner meals as well as baked goods and ice creams. My friends had a lasagna and macaroni and cheese, and another friend had a really enticing ice cream sundae. We were all left very happy with our choices. They also have an impressive cocktail menu as well. Overall, just a great addition to our city. They put a lot of love into this place and it shows. Careful attention to detail, and service with a big smile. I will be back for sure!

I was wandering around downtown looking for a coffee shop when I stumbled upon Petunia’s. What a great find! In addition to my coffee, I also got a vegan doughnut which was very good. My friend ordered a Tomato, Mozzarella & Pesto sandwich(mouth watering!). Everything in the bakery is vegan which worked out in my favor. It is not advertised on their menu so my friend and I had to ask a few times just to make sure there wasn’t any dairy. I will be going back to try more of their pastries and lunch items.

First off, always awesome to find a place that is vegan AND gluten free for my husband who had a million allergies. He loves their doughnuts and sticky buns! Personally I think a lot of their stuff is really sweet, kinda pricey, and I’d love to see more soy-free options. The menu is pretty big, but the soy-free pastries are pretty dry and limited. Definite props to them for having more than just soy milk though! They have hemp, almond, coconut, hazelnut and maybe a few others too. Love grabbing a latte here. My absolute favorite treat here is the Belgian waffles! Only available on weekend sadly. But for reals they are heaven: delicious, light, and not too sweet. Customer service could be more consistent, but usually they are friendly and helpful. Overall, some good options for those in need of a gluten-free vegan treat!

I wanted to love Petunia’s purely based on their collaboration with Salt & Straw. My husband and I ventured into their bakery on Macaron Day.(it was something done for charity.) I asked the cashier what he recommended and what his favorite was. He replied, in a very dry tone with, «That’s up to you.» Um, ok? Thanks for the help. We proceeded to order a macaron each.(They were ‘giving’ away macarons with a suggested donation of $ 2 a piece. It was for charity so I’m all for it). The cashier then said, «You can have one macaron with your donation and I’ll charge you $ 3 for the other one.» Am I missing something? We’re both participating and each giving a donation, yet you’ll only give both of us one macaron to share. In my opinion, if you choose to participate in such a large event, maybe you should have someone a little friendlier and a bit more helpful out front to represent your business. We will definitely not be returning.

First time going there, it was pretty packed. it’s pretty small so you might have to get treats to go. The banana split is awesome the chocolate cake it wasn’t bad but it wasn’t 100% great either. My partner did not like the vanilla cupcakes but he did say the vanilla ice cream was good. something about the food made me extremely thirsty and I seen a ton of people getting water so make sure you drink enough water maybe something in the treats but yes I would go there again
