Pacific University Eye Clinic

I went to the eye clinic at Pacific University because I am low enough income that I could receive a 50% discount on an eye exam and eyeglasses. I really needed a pair of prescription eyeglasses because I am taking meds that cause light sensitivity, to the point that they can cause retinal damage or even blindness in the sun. The catch for the 50% discount is you have to see an intern for the initial exam but I explained to him my problem with the drugs and he said he would look them up but he never did. The intern was great and I felt like he really knew what he was doing and felt like I could definitely trust his examination.
However, when he completed his exam, I had to see a faculty member to verify the intern’s prescription and in spite of having explained my light sensitivity he started shining bright lights in my eyes. I understand the light is necessary to detect possible damage in the back of the eye but he did not understand that I could not tolerate the light. At all. I told them I would have my eyes checked for disease as soon as I completed my drug treatment, but he insisted on shining the light in my eye regardless so I finally told him I only came for the prescription so that I could get sunglasses to help with the sensitivity. He told me that I could not get the prescription without having the light testing on my eyes and so I got up to leave. He escorted me to the front desk like I was some sort of criminal and loudly told all the staff, so that other patients could hear him, I could not have a prescription because I refused testing.
I sent an email to the person responsible for patient satisfaction but was only offered another appointment. I explained I was too embarrassed to come back in there and that I only wanted my prescription. I have yet to hear back from her after 3 days. My experience at Pacific University was not only a waste of my time and the intern’s but also was terribly demeaning. (not to mention the pain from the light causing a serious headache) And, I did tell the faculty member that I had a terrible headache from when the intern put the light on my eyes.
