Moody’s Doughnuts no longer exists. Sorta. Rocking Frog Café bought them out. Its no longer a foodstand but they make the same donuts inside the restaurant and now Not just on Sundays. Every dang day. They’re good doughnuts. They have chocolate, cinnamon, vanilla, and plain. They’re all very good.

I will say it’s sad that Sundays are the only time to get these cinnamon doughnuts but I will also admit that it’s probably a good thing or else I’d be here too often. Give yourself a Sunday treat and expect you might have to wait for the freshest most delicious doughnuts I’ve ever eaten. The outdoor back patio of the coffee shop is pleasant and their coffee is a nice compliment. Once the music was blasting Led Zeppelin and I was in a classical music, coffee and doughnuts kinda mood but it didn’t matter. I was there for the doughnuts!

There is absolutely nothing NOT to love about Moody’s. Fresh, hot, delish donuts served up by possibly the friendliest donut-man in town. Watching the donuts be made is fun enough for adults, but it’s pure magic for kids, who can stand on a special perch to see all the action. On sunny mornings, there’s nothing better than grabbing a patio table with a hot coffee and warm donuts. Only thing that could be better is if Moody’s was open on more days!

I’m so special that I merit my own fresh, hot, crispy, cakey doughnut whenever I ask for it, at least that’s what I’d like to think. You see, those delicious fluffy golden circular confections are made to order. That’s right. Made-To-Order. Yes, you’ll have to wait 10 – 15 min after you order to get your carb fix & while the shakes may have you jonesing for sweet starch of the gods, don’t worry, it’s worth it. Just make sure you pick up extra napkins to mop up the drool while you’re picturing your steaming, crispy, cakey, slightly greasy slurpalicious cake doughnut freshly topped with your choice of cinnamon sugar, powdered sugar, chocoooooolate, vanilla glaze or plain jane. At $ 1/divine doughnut, how can you order just one? And apparently they care about your waistline & cardiovascular health cuz they’re still only open on Sat & Sun. So does this mean I’m only special on the weekend? Evil b*st*rds. Now I’m getting a complex…

I wasn’t religious until I went to the Doughnut Church. With doughnuts made fresh in front of you and choice of five flavors, I think my stomach has been saved from the demon that is Krispy Kream. They aren’t your run of the mill doughnuts, they are closer the old school variety. Crispy and delicious and oh so rich. Hallelujah. Praise the carboload. Bless the sucrose. Oooh, this is the first Portland review of the year. I knew there was a reason I stayed home tonight!

I went to church on Sunday. The doughnut church, that is. Moody’s is only open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays. The guy that runs the little shack said he couldn’t do it more than one day a week since the oil gets everywhere… including his eyeballs. You could tell he’s done with the business and is selling it off soon. The rice flour doughnuts come in five flavors; plain, powdered sugar, cinnamon, vanilla glazed and chocolate glazed. They are a buck each so I got the plain and the chocolate glazed. Oh wow, you could tell how fantastic a simple doughnut is as it rolled off the conveyor belt. If I’m going to compare Moody’s to Voodoo, well, it’s not really much of a comparison. Moody’s is a simple and good doughnut. Voodoo is the trendy doughnut with its bacon and colorful sprinkles.

Went here yesterday(Sunday) on a recommendation from a trusted friend. This place is a definite stop for fresh donuts in Portland. Haven’t been to too many other shops but you get the real deal here. Here’s the kicker, they’re only open from 9am to 2pm on Sundays. That’s it. Seriously, that’s it. They’re also pretty slow if there is a line or if you’re in a rush. If you can get past those two things you’re all set. Don’t worry about the second thing though, I think they have live bands playing on Sundays. Ok, the other thing is that you’re going to have trouble finding it if you don’t know what to look for. You need to look for the Rocking Frog Café(which used to be The Coffee Shop or something like that). It’s on the corner of SE Belmont and 25th. Moody’s is in the backyard of the café. So this place is a tiny little shack. Room for one donut maker and one donut maker machine. He stands back there and makes donuts and they’re pretty darn stinkin good. If you haven’t had fresh donuts you’re in for a treat. When we went he had 5 different kinds so we got a half dozen for $ 5. There was plain, cinnamon sugar, chocolate, vanilla cream, and powdered sugar. All of them dipped by hand. Seriously if you like pastries, doughy things, sweet things, delicious things then you need to stop by this place. Portland has a couple of hidden treasures and this is definitely one of them.
