Marquis Mt Tabor

Never had the pleasure of staying in an aftercare facility. And if I ever need the services of one ever again, my LAST choice would be Marquis Mt Tabor. This is basically a storage facility for older folks and some like I, who live in 2 story dwellings but because of injury, they’re not able to maneuver stairs. Better prepare for a long wait if you need, God forbid, to go to bathroom. An even longer wait for meds. If you weren’t miserable before arriving… you will be when you’re lucky enough to escape this hell hole. Oh and one of best ways to wake up at 4am is be greeted by a woman with so much gum in her mouth she can barely speak. And the food? Got here at just before noon, lunch already in progress. Asked for some broth… nurse says ‘I can see if we can get you something more…’ never saw her again. Dinner time rolls around… they bring a big hotdog w/​chili cheese, uncooked fries and dressing-​less salad. ‘Who ordered that?’ I ask. Crickets. Well, I’m a vegetarian. Sorry, that’s all that’s left. If this is what I have to look forward to in my Sr years… take me now!

We selected the Marquis post-​surgical rehabilitation center for my 80-​yr-​old mom after she broke her hip and had replacement surgery. I’m torn about a rating to give for this place. The facility is clean and modern with all the necessary physical therapy equipment, and the staff is cheerful, attentive and well-​trained. The Marquis as an organization, however, seems to be administratively challenged.
Communication is poor between different caregiver functions, with one saying the other will take care of something, but then it never happens. The response time when pushing the «help» button is usually 20 – 30 minutes, and medication delivery is always ½ hour or more late. (A real issue when the patient is in pain!) The caregivers are always busy, so perhaps they’re understaffed?
The worst problem was the house Doctor, who refused to give Mom the medication that her OWN primary care physician prescribed for a pre-​existing chronic pain condition. My Mom was in agony for a WEEK before she was given something else for the pain, and that only happened after I asked if I needed to take legal action to get her relief… The so-​called «Social Worker» was of absolutely no use either. Her role should be that of patient advocate, but instead she is only a mouthpiece for the organization. It took her 3 days to return my call, and then still did nothing to assist when she should have stepped in.
Meanwhile, Mom was flat on her back, in too much pain to get out of bed for a whole week, when she should have been up & using her leg. This set back her recovery, yet she was still released before she had regained her strength, balance and confidence.
If you use this facility, just make sure you are on top of your loved one’s needs 24/​7, because you will need to be their advocate. The caregivers write reports and make calls in response to the patients’ needs, but the administrators & Doctor don’t take action. As one of the caregivers suggested, «You have to be the squeaky wheel to get anything done around here!»
