La Playita Market

I had a horrible experience with the shop keeper at this small neighborhood market. On my way into work, I realized I needed to stop into a shop for some urgently needed feminine products. I stopped in and saw nothing in terms of personal care on display in the main shop. The only personal care items available were behind the counter and under the glass display at the register. I approached the woman behind the counter and asked if they sold any tampons. She told me they sell individual tampons and pulled a very large (40 – 60 pack) box of Playtex tampons out from underneath the counter. I asked her how much and she informed me they were $ 1. I was quite surprised considering, being a woman, I know exactly how much she is making off that massive box. I told her and somewhat jesting tone, «Well looks like you’ve got yourself a $ 60 box of tampons there, don’t you?» Her reaction was unbelievable. She proceeded to snatch the single tampon off the counter which I was pulling out my debit card to pay for, threw it back into the box, and slammed the box back out of sight. She then began flinging her arms about and speaking very aggressively in Spanish telling me to «[go somewhere else, then!]» I was so taken off guard and repulsed that I had to basically beg this woman to sell me a tampon quick before I was late for work for an outrageously overpriced sum (because who begs for a tampon unless they really, really, really need it). I said to her, «I am the nicest person and I don’t know how I just got into a fight with you! Por favor, I still want to buy it, please!» She then grabbed the tampon out of the box and told me they charge a 50 cent credit card transaction fee… I know for a fact that with the primitive cash handling system that they use the 50 cent charge is completely unnecessary for a VISA card. Even after the unreasonable interaction we had with one another, she still felt she should charge me $ 1.50 for a single tampon. I just can’t even believe that this happened. I understand I made a small quip about the price but things escalated so quickly and spitefully, I can say with 100% certainty that I will never go back to this shop. I encourage you to do the same.
