Best seafood in Portland. The cod fish and chips, are the best ive had in ALL of Oregon(including the coast). Everything is cut by hand, breaded by hand, and made with lots of love! Fries are always fresh, and everything comes out steaming hot! The crab pepper cheese soup, is to DIE for, and they sell it at New Seasons Markets now!!! My better half, usually gets salmon, or catfish, and its always amazing. The service is superb too! It was a super busy night, with only 3 people on the floor. They all seemed to be pouring drinks, and serving, and filling waters. I was incredibly impress with how this crew works as a team, and helps each other out. I am incredibly picky when it comes to good food, and good service, this place has it all.

BEST. SWEETPOTATO. FRIES. EVER. And the whole facility is gluten-free with the exception of some beers. Def my favorite place in Portland so far! Been here a week and already stopped in three times.

Even though this is a gluten free fish house you would never know it. Really good fish n chips. Only thing that was not so good, onion rings were flavorless. Will be back

I have been back a few times now. I needed to update my review because I absolutely love this place. My favorite is the clam strips and the clam chowder. I crave it all the time. This restaurant has become one of my favorite«go to» places.

Very disappointing visit. Our server was very tired(I know this because she told us) and when asked about one of the sauces said she wasn’t sure how to describe it, but it was really good. We chose this place because it was the only restaurant we could find with fried cheese curds on the menu that wasn’t located downtown.(We didn’t want to go downtown.) The cheese curds had almost no cheese in them, more like cheese remnants. We mentioned this to the other server(ours had disappeared) and she told the manager. He gave them to us for half price, which was appreciated, but they were $ 10 for a very small amount of cheese-less cheese curds and it seemed like too small a gesture.

Based on a newspaper or magazine article, stating that the calm chowder here is among Oregon best, I decided to stop by to sample theirs. I’m disappointed to report that I was underwhelmed with my bowl. It was very bland even when I added some Tabasco sause and salt. It tasted as if it had been thickened with corn starch instead of potatoes. Some bacon pieces would have helped quite a bit. The only bread they offer is gluten free. I was disappointed that they didn’t have a couple of other options like sordough or a hearty whole grain. Not every one in this neighborhood is into gluten free. For those that are, it’s great to have the option available. But for the rest of us, it would be nice to have the other choices available. I didn’t order any of the fish dishes this time. And, it’s been several years since I did. Since it’s in the neighborhood, I may decide to return another time to give the fish a 2nd try. It seems that I wasn’t all that impressed by what I had the last time, but since I am unable to recall why maybe it’s worth one more chance.

Don’t get 3 stars. This place is a solid 4 star. Had the crab pepper cheese soup– out of this world. Had the prawns in original coating– perfection. The cocktail sauce is heavily laced with horseradish. Take the top of your head off sauce. It’s clear they care about the food the serve. Everything is gluten free, and amazingly tasty. In town on business, been here twice now, will try to make it three in a row tomorrow. It’s just that good.

When the best thing about your dining experience is the friendly cat(«Grover») hanging out in the patio, it’s not a place I can recommend. The early evening crowd was pretty loud(kids, not drinkers). There was a pretty good happy hour food selection – $ 5 cod and chips(half size), cheese curds, Caesar salad, several other things – and some drink discounts. The server was very nice, though service was a bit slow during the rush. Where things really fell apart was in the execution. The drink I ordered was served with an ant in it, twice. It seems like something you should check for the second time around. When I ordered a beer instead, that didn’t arrive until after our food(but it was comped). As for the food, for me the highlight was the fries, nice and crispy(but Grover wouldn’t touch them). The fish just ok. The tartar sauce looked like it had been sitting out a while – so did all of the vinegar, which had condensation in the bottles. The Caesar salad was wilted and soggy with too much dressing. The cheese curds disappointed – mostly breading and very little curd(but Grover did like those). Overall, nice patio, cute cat, friendly service, lousy food, questionable sanitation.

As a fish place I’d say this is a solid B. Some of the non-fish options like the chicken strips were a bit of a disappointment… But it’s a fish place. As a gluten free destination it’s awesome. I miss fish and chips and this scratched that itch very well. If gluten doesn’t matter to you maybe take a star off my review.

All gluten free so super way for our friend with allergies to eat freely. The crab soup is amazing and rich! Friendly service and in my family they vote these guys as having the best fish and chips in town. Plays Blazers games, family friendly, and yummy food.

Walked out. Waited 20 minutes for a cup of soup that looked like a 4 year old dished it out and was COLD. Calamari was battered and apparently fried for under 1 second. Horrible service.

I’m from California(not moving here! :o) and visiting a friend for a few weeks. I had the best fried prawns in beer batter that I’ve ever had. Fresh fish with great flavor. Can’t wait to go back! Also, excellent customer service.

The fish& chips are very tasty! My favorite fish is the walleye with the sweet potato fries. Everything their is gluten free. Try the crab pepper soup it’s yummy! Carrot cake for desert. It can get busy there especially if there’s a packer game. Service is good, friendly staff.

Holy snaps! Came here New Years Day hoping for clam chowder. I used to live like 4 blocks from here and never went even once. We both had clam chowder and it was pretty tasty but what really surprised me were the fish tacos. I had one Southwest and one Spicy. Dayummmmmmmmm soonnnnnnnnnnnnn. Those were tasty tacos. They are huge. Like sandwich size, not like street taco size. I also sampled one of my friend’s tacos… It was sweet and not spicy. Yum. Those were some outstanding tacos. Bummers? There were only 5 tables full or so and the service was really slow. Great food though. Just not expedient.

The Radio Ad drew us here. Yes Advertising works. But the fish in chips sampler was not that great. I suppose I’m not on board with their style of ultra thin batter, but prefer a tempura style coating. The portions weren’t generous for this sort of casual dinning and nothing stood out. Well, hard to hide anything on fish and chips. You gotta have great fish and great chips if that’s all you do. As reference, I love Red Robin’s fish and chips, both the fish and chips w/any sort of dipping sauce you want and unlimited fries and drinks and other loyalty perks :) points off for value, taste, and comfort/convenience

The blackened cod that I had was really good. I did have to ask for it to be re-done as «real» blackened because the first time it was brought out to me, it was quite plain. When it came back, it was awesome! But I have to tell on myself and apologize to the polite waiter who dealt with me asking for the cod to be fixed, then I spilled a full glass of water. If there was a Unilocal review for customers, I’d get 2 stars, but I tipped well. Hopefully that made up for the tumult I created. Overall, it was a decent experience at Hawthorne Fish House.

There is such a huge variety of seafood to pick from at this place! It’s not just fish and chips — there is so many types: pacific cod, Alaska halibut, chile-fried catfish from Mississippi, yellow perch, Alaska Salmon, Manitoba walleye, shrimp, oysters, scallops, clams. I opted for the standard pacific cod. I really enjoyed it, especially the jalapeño tartar it comes with. There is a lot of food, especially because it comes with a bunch of fries too. The batter is gluten-free, so you really taste the uniqueness in the fried fish. It’s not overwhelmingly greasy, and the batter isn’t completely overpowering the actual seafood. It’s also a really friendly establishment. Service was great.

Remember in the movie Elf when Buddy blindfolds Jovie and takes her to get«the world’s best cup of coffee» and she responds with«this tastes like a crappy cup of coffee» despite the sign out front? Well that’s the exact reaction I had to «the best fish and chips in Portland.» There is nothing good about the fish and chips. I got the cod and my boyfriend got clam strips. Neither were local, and definitely tasted like something straight out of a freezer. And this is not a cheap meal. We also ordered the cheese crab soup fries… those were okay at best. Some hole in the wall places end up being hidden gems. This is not one of them.

Three star food. Four star service. We really enjoyed this little fish house. We were waited on by several different staff members…2 smiling young girls and one smiling young guy. That is a plus because it is hard to find. The chowder is very good. Could be a little more hot temperature wise. I’m kind of picky that way though. Good flavor and consistency. The ceviche was pretty good even though it was just bay shrimp that were most likely cooked prior to the citrus soak. It also had jalapeños, tomatoes, onion, and avocado. Served with chips on the daily special for $ 5.95. I would order it again. My beer was really good too. Hefeweizen always a top notch choice. Intermission…waiting for crab pepper cheese soup. Voted best soup in Portland at some point in time… Verdict in… Crab pepper cheese soup is flavorful and I liked it a lot. My opinion is that it is would definitely be better served as a dip. It is thick like a dip and rich with creamy flavor. Dipped some of my boyfriend’s fries in it. Nice combo. Clam chowder was my favorite choice of the evening. We will definitely be back to have more clam chowder. Give this place a try. It’s a little spendy for portion size and the fish could be better seasoned but the service makes it a four star experience.
