I really, really wanted to like this place. I got the steak and cheese sandwich with vegan cheese, and it was so overwhelmed with sauce that it was like soup in a breadbowl. I powered through three bites and threw it away. Maybe it’s better if you order it dry??? Two stars because the sandwich is enormous, and because the seitan is good(a piece had fallen out of the bread and escaped the flood of sauce, so I was able to taste it). So disappointed.

This was a bomb-diggity brekkie sammie! Not a lot of places make these, so it made me very happy! Awesome housemade sausage, and love the fact that they have Chao cheese and not just Daiya! Looking forward to trying lunch there, too!

Oh the breakfast sandwiches. Oh the cheeseburgers. I ate here every damn day whilst enjoying Portland. Sure, it was only a block from my hotel, but I would have scaled a mountain to get here. The service was fast and hella friendly, they have the chao cheese, and all of the items I jammed in my mouth were well priced and so very delicious. I still eat the breakfast sandwiches in my dreams.

This is my favorite food cart. Period. I’ve gotten several things off their menu and I’ve never had something i didn’t like. Very fairly priced for vegan food with large portions. The only disappointment is the grilled cheese. i wish it was bigger, but i guess thats why its like 4 bucks.

Came to the area to get sonny’s on a Monday but they were closed, LUCKILY!!! I do meatless Monday and saw this stall was vegetarian. Holy smokes, so good! New Monday joint for me. I got the blt with avacado, pepper jack cheese and rye bread. This may even have been better then the real deal. I’m so over eating like a rabbit on Mondays. Go and you will not be disappointed! Andddd a plus to the cart, other then their food, the staff was super friendly!

Who knew the best sandwich I’ve had in Portland happens to be meatless. The sandwich was amazing. I’m really disappointed that I’ve eaten here five or six times and it’s the first time I’ve ordered the sub. I usually get the blt but wow, the sub is delicious! I got real cheese and added avocado and banana peppers. Loved it!

The breakfast sandwiches were a delightful way to start my days while i was in Portland. I wish I could take the cart with me back to the vegan-unfriendly hinterlands of upstate New York.

Great friendly service. Ordered the bacon cheese burger and it was by far the best vegan burger I’ve ever had! We split sandwiches to try and paired it with the Philly cheese steak. The sandwich was huge. So much food! Great overall experience

I finally got an afternoon off that I could get to the cart in their weird hours, and all I can say is incredible food and service. I got the vegan steak and cheese sandwich. Plus very reasonably priced for vegan food in the area as well. Highly recommended.

I was in Portland for 24 hours and ate here twice. I literally had the best vegan sandwiches I may have ever eaten here! I don’t remember the menu items, but I got the italian-style cold sandwich for lunch one day and a breakfast sandwich the next morning. The ingredients were quality, plentiful and just the right amount of each. Really good portion sizes. Friendly people. You just can’t go wrong with DC Vegetarian Cart. I can’t wait to fly across the country one day and eat here again!

Great vegetarian+vegan comfort food, lovingly prepared. A bit on the heavy side but when that’s exactly what you’re craving, don’t hesitate. Not far from the waterfront if you’re looking for a nice place to sit down. Individual menu items I’ve tried: 1) Italian sub — really solid, fresh & filling. Five stars. 2) BLT on wheat(with avocado — do it!) — fantastic, with great veggie bacon and lovely nutty flavor. Five stars. 3) Bacon cheeseburger — decent, but didn’t love the cartmade patty. Four stars. [*] 4) Chicken salad — ginormous but a bit bland(basically just a huge amount of soy curls). Maybe try it with some extras. Three stars as-is. [*] There are veggie patties and then there are«fake meat» patties. This one falls more on the veggie side. I’m personally more a fan of patties that come closer to meat-like flavors & texture without the dead animals(e.g., Beyond Meat’s Beast Burger patties). YMMV.

Solid food! The portion size was absolutely perfect for the cost. Above all, it’s delicious! We had the tempeh bacon and the sausage breakfast sandwiches. The anise seed flavor really came through in the sausage and the tofu was really nicely marinaded as well. Definitely would want to go back to them before we leave Portland.

Yummy vegan comfort food and umami heaven! I just inhaled this savory sandwich: Grilled cheese on rye with Chao cheese, tempeh bacon, avocado and tomato. Rye bread gives it an extra special depth and Chao cheese is more creamy and I think has more flavor than Daiya. Also the people are super nice here too, and that really does make a difference when you can taste the love in your food, thank you!

Makes me hungry just thinking about DC Vegetarian. My favorite in the morning is their breakfast sandwich and in the afternoon is the Philly. I wish they were open more hours, but ever time I go downtown, I stop to eat first! Thanks for the good vegan food.

My boyfriend and I both had steak and cheese sandwiches. Both of us could only eat half because they were really big. So I wish they offered half sizes for less cost because it was $ 7.50 a sandwich and we had to throw half of each away(it didn’t seem like it would reheat well). He gave it a 5⁄5 for taste; he is vegetarian and doesn’t really watch what he eats. I eat very healthy and track all my food. I asked if they could stir fry the veggies without added oil and they said no. I was a little bummed they didn’t have a way to do that(I request this often when I go out and usually have no problems). But the sandwich was yummy! It just sat very heavy for me because I’m not used to the ‘meats’ and fats(which I only eat on rare occasions). They’re also open pretty limited hours; until 3pm M-F. Basically just lunch time. I bet we will be back to try another menu item but we will probably share it! I’m giving it a 3⁄5 because I feel it was good! It just didn’t blow my socks off.

I am new to ‘food carts’ and was a little skeptical about the quality of the food — DC Vegetarian has made me a believer! The cart is extremely clean and the quality of the food is really good! I have been sticking with the Seitan Cheese Steak Hoagie because it is so so so good! And, so so BIG! But, all the options look good — please try, U will be glad U did!

Oh my goodness. I didn’t have time to eat breakfast before heading in to work today and I noticed that I was starting to feel hangry(not good). I’ve been meaning to try out DC Vegetarian’s breakfast sandwiches for a while so today seemed like the perfect opportunity for me to do this. I was down at the cart around 9:30 and there was no line to wait in when I arrived. I ordered breakfast sandwich #2 which has the vegan sausage, eggless egg, chao cheese(I asked for the substitute) avocado and red pepper aioli on ciabatta bread for $ 5. AGH! It was delicious!!! Seriously, like heaven and there is no doubt in my mind, this sandwich is way better tasting than any real egg and sausage breakfast contender I’ve ever had. Sometimes the sandwiches at DC Veg are so big(i.e. the cheese steak) that they are challenging to consume but the breakfast #2 was half the size of their big sub roll and it was perfect. Maybe a little too perfect because my heart cried a tiny tear when the sandwich was gone. I’m totally looking forward to having this for breakfast again sometime soon.

This place was my favorite place ever, I work right next to it and I used to run down and get sandwiches from them all the time. But I don’t know what happened to there service, I waited what it felt close to 20 minutes, with 2 people ahead of me for a vegan grilled cheese sandwich with vegan bacon and avocado and they made my sandwich wrong, they put regular cheese instead of vegan cheese. And said sorry they would have to make me another one which would take them 6 minutes. I couldn’t take it and had to ask for my money back because my lunch brake was over… So I got no lunch… they didn’t even offer like a free sandwich or anything for the inconvenience, they really didn’t even say sorry…

Let’s begin with awesomeness. They have a grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwich that goes amazingly well with any cup of coffee. The ingredients used are perfectly proportioned to one another. Get this if you want a treat –like or a snack or a light breakfast. It won’t fill you up completely but will satisfy hunger in a better way than a snickers ever could. Now the alright. The vegan BLT on gluten free bread was just something to eat. I wouldn’t recommend. This sandwhich is one that could be made at home. There was definitely a lack of flavor. I feel they should put a homemade special sauce on the sandwich to make it stand out. I added avocado thinking would be enough but it still lacked flavor. It’s not worth 7.50. Overall, I had great experience and a dry one here. You win some you lose some. May try the burger one day. The grilled PB and jelly will be my favorite for now.

Oh DC Veg Cart, how I love thee. The Steak and cheese is massive and delicious and sure doesn’t FEEL like vegetarian eating. The italian sub is delicious(add fakin’ bacon!) and probably my favorite lunch-on-the-go. House made seitan. Hot seitan chili on a cold day. Kind people. Good breakfast sammies, even. Go there now and leave with a happy belly.

Italian sub on wheat add avocado. I couldn’t believe my tastebuds, I thought I was eating meat! So tasty, next time I’m in portland I will be back. There is a .50 cent charge for using a card FYI.

This is my first food cart experience while visiting Portland. The vegan chicken salad with tempeh bacon on gluten free bread is amazing. They were really friendly and the amount of food was very generous! Only three blocks to the river front which has shade, sun, view of the Willamette, breeze and amazing people watching!

Located amidst the many carts, trailers, etc on this corner of downtown Portland, you’ll find DC Vegetarian Cart. Not sure if it was just the day we were visiting or if it’s always this bustling as they were shooting for the TV show Grimm in the neighborhood. No fear as service was quick, but seating is pretty much non-existent. Unlike say Mississippi Marketplace, you’ll be eating on the sidewalk during lunch or taking it somewhere else. I try not to compare things from far away to other cities since this may be the best burger you’ll find in Portland? It’s probably a five star cart, on it’s own merit. However, No No Burger in the Bay Area has spoiled me to all other burger wannabes. It takes an awfully special burger to impress me. The Bac-non Cheeseburger was really quite good on it’s own standards. A thick chewy patty drenched in plenty of sauce so your hands get messy as you eat it, which is just the way I like my burgers. Then again, it isn’t my hands that are getting messy…(thank you baby!) The tempeh bacon wasn’t too bad considering I’m not a fan of tempeh bacon normally. That in itself is impressive to me. I order chili wherever I see it on the menu. The soup of the day just so happened to be Seitanic Chili. While it wasn’t as fiery as it’s name implies, it was pretty darn good with the correct ratio of chewy seitan pieces to beans and spices. I would have personally preferred it to be spicier. If my babygirl can handle the heat, then it’s not living up to it’s clever name. I know if I worked in the area, I would be here quite regularly working on a legit Dukedom…

A few years later and I still love this cart like I did on day one. It is so, so good. They are now doing breakfast sandwiches, too! Same top notch food, ingredients, service, ease or ordering, and quickness. I had a random weekday off last week, so I naturally jumped on a bus downtown, ordered up one of those bad boys(Steak and Cheese), and ate it unashamedly on a corner with some streetfolk, and walked away not only covered in its remains, but in the most glorious seitan coma that has ever happened. Can’t even tell you where I was or what I did for the next couple of hours, euphoria level was too high. It’s a must-try amongst the most solid of Portland foodcarts.
