Much like my shrinking arteries these days, China Wind Bookstore is small and narrow. There is literally only room for 1 or 2 customers at a time … which seems to be just fine since it exclusively serves Chinese speaking clientele visiting the Fubonn Shopping Center on 82nd Ave. Since my in-laws are from Shanghai China and need customer service, reading materials, phone cards, and shipping services in Chinese, we use China Wind Bookstore frequently. The customer service is totally a-ok and we get what’s needed when it’s needed. Selection is limited, but they couldn’t jam anything else into the tight space. If you are seeking Chinese service, Chinese magazines, Chinese newspapers, Chinese books, or small Chinese gifts in Portland, there aren’t a lot of options, so, no matter how small it is, I’m thankful China Wind Bookstore fills its niche.

Growing up, I remember China Wind bookstores to be much larger than this Fubonn version(clearly I’m thinking of the old location on Powell, which is now a China Wind RESTAURANT instead( ). And though it’s hardly a Barnes & Nobles, it’s the closest thing for Chinese only readers(#1). This store is always pretty empty and I can’t help but wonder how much paper they have to go through to replenish the daily variety magazines and nearly daily newspaper output. There are also books ranging from all sorts of subjects along the shelves on the walls, but I’m not expecting much variety beyond cooking, travel, and history. The service has always been pretty good here. They do answer their phone(whew) and can help hold books ahead of time. Prices are also going to be on the cheaper side, but then again, how many Chinese bookstores do they really have to compete with?(#2) __________ (#1) Feeling left out? At least there are daily copies of the Asian Reporter( ) for the rest of us. (#2) If you can count and name more than 5 other stores that are within a 2 mile radius, you get an almond cookie.
