Donated a mattress to this charity organization. Every other place you try to donate to will charge you to pick it up and a lot of places will recycle them and charge you for that as well. Contact Peter to donate furniture and beds when the business you bought the item from won’t take it back, but often times will reimburse you completely if you demonstrate that the furniture was donated to charity. Thank you Catholic Charities!

Wow, it’s hella crazy that this place ONLY helps single females and immigrants. I didn’t even think they would turn away a family of 5 with small children. but they did, and what they said is they only help single females, and immigrants. WOW … This place is supporting immigrants over locals… How is that Catholic ?? How are they even funded???

There must be 5 Catholic Charities already listed on Unilocal. But I’m pretty sure none(maybe one) of them are still in existence… at least at those addresses. The one on Powell and 28th is DEFINITELY there. I don’t know exactly what CC does. But if you go to the website, you’ll see a bunch of services listed. I have been spending Wednesday afternoons teaching art/craft class to kids for over 6 months now. The housing development — Caritas Housing Develoment — is run and funded by Catholic Charities. There are at least 50 families living at this development — folks from all over, I believe Somalia is the largest country of origin. This is a place for families in transition(although some have been there a long time). Some may have just come from another country, some are just in need of assistance. I may be wrong about this, but as far as I can tell, there is only one full-time employee at this location. Elisabeth is a little powerhouse who makes everything happen! They partner with different organizations to provide services for their resident. In additon to the craft class(through Hands-On Portland), they offer a homewrok club for kids of all ages, a knitting group, as well as more salient servives(finiancial planning…) which may or may not take place at this location. The housing development is kept fairly well, it’s great that the kids have a big courtyrd in the middle where they can play sports and run around, while still be under the watchful eye of mom and dad. The residents are pretty freindly(save some teenage boys… big surprise). In summer time, there is summer school and that a big deal. I found the structure of summer school to be way too lacking for me — but I’m pretty sure it’s ALL volunteers, so it’s hard to create that structure and have it last past a summer. If I knew more about the organization and services — maybe this would be a 4 star review, or maybe a 2-star… But it’s a great notion, and for Elisabeth and her efforts — a definite 4 star! For everything else, 3 for now.
