Jocelyn Brown, CPM, LDM at Borealis Birth provides midwifery and doula services in and around Portland, OR.

Licensed midwifery care covers comprehensive out-​of-​hospital prentatal care, birth, and mother-​baby postpartum care for up to 8 weeks after your birth. We accept some private insurance as well as Oregon Health Plan. Borealis is happy to verify your benefits free of charge.

Doula and monitrice services are offered for women planning births both in-​hospital and out.

Care can happen in-​home or at Sunnyside Collaborative Care.

History

Established in 2012.

The name «Borealis» is taken from the Latin «Aurora Borealis» (the northern lights), as well as from Boreal Forest, an ecosystem in northern Minnesota where Jocelyn grew up. Borealis represents the communion of Earth and Sky, grounding and lightness.

Jocelyn Brown, CPM, LDM has been attending births since 2007. Borealis Birth has been a part of the Mt. Tabor business community since 2012.

I feel equally comfortable with birth at home and in the hospital, and I’m grateful that women in Portland have so many options. My yoga and meditation practices inform my midwifery practice every day. I approach birth from the viewpoint of the mindfulness tradition, which means supporting normal birth just as it is and helping my clients make informed, intuitive decisions within their present circumstances. I live on Mt. Tabor and I like to read, sleep, travel, spend time with my people and my dog, and feed my addiction to fashion and design blogs.

We hired Jocelyn to be our birth doula for a November 2013 hospital delivery, and are so thankful that we did! Jocelyn is professional, capable, and passionate about her field. She is informed and up to date about pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. She is easy to be around and we found that we could depend on her: she was never more than a text or phone call away, and remained at my side throughout labor and delivery.
There were several key points during labor where Jocelyn was invaluable. She provided a birthing tub, which got us through several hours of contractions. When labor stalled out, Jocelyn was hands-​on, leveraging natural methods to help reposition our baby. Her knowledge and input helped us navigate the medical options available to us so that we could make decisions about interventions. She provided lots of psychological support and reassurance, particularly during transition and pushing.
For us as first time parents, Jocelyn’s post partum visits were extremely helpful as a check in for where we were and sharing of information and resources. She was skilled at handling our newborn and taught us ways to hold, comfort and burp him.
Having Borealis on our team helped us have the natural, non-​medicated birth that we wanted. We recommend them highly!

Towards the end of my pregnancy, we hired Jocelyn as monitrice, after not feeling confident with our initial doula. After our first meeting with her, it was obvious she was exactly what we were wanting. Throughout all of our visits, phone calls, texts, & emails, we felt 100% comfortable and had complete confidence with her by our side. She has great knowledge, experience, tips & advice that I don’t think we could have gotten anywhere else. She was an amazingly calm presence throughout labor and birth, always there with calming & reassuring words and techniques to help get my focus back where it needed to be in a positive way. My husband was able to be at the birth as a man becoming a dad and a support to me without the stress of having to solely be my coach, he was able to relax and be more present in welcoming his son. Having Jocelyn at our birth was the best decision we could have made. After birth, she was a great help with breastfeeding and a go-​to trustworthy person as first time parents with a question or concern. Even when she has been technically ‘off duty’, she has always offered help/​advice or pointed us in the direction of someone/​where that would have the help we were looking for. I have complete confidence in Jocelyn and refer her to all expectant parents we come across, friends or not! I know Jocelyn will be at our side for out next birth and any others after that… maybe as our midwife at a home birth instead next time! I trust her implicitly.

Hiring Jocelyn was the single best decision my husband and I made during our pregnancy. I had a typical Ob/​Gyn whose approach was to get me in and out of the door as soon as possible at each visit. Jocelyn was available to answer questions, make referrals and offer reassurance when the doctor fell down on her job.
During labor, Jocelyn was a calming presence who worked wonderfully with the nurses. We never asked her to, but she grabbed the camera as our daughter arrived and snapped several photos of the big event. We were so thankful she had the presence of mind to do that because we weren’t thinking about photos at the time!
Most importantly, Jocelyn helped me breastfeed seemingly within minutes of having given birth. My daughter and I have had no breastfeeding hiccups — she’s 11 months old as I submit this — and I think Jocelyn’s early support played a crucial role in establishing that relationship. This was our first pregnancy and we got the natural childbirth we wanted!

During labor, Jocelyn was hands-​on, helping alleviate the intense pain with massages, compresses, and gentle but firm coaching on effective positions. She helped my husband to get through moments of despair during the labor; she helped me get through my own low points by directing my attention to different approaches to the contractions. After the birth of my son, at his 24-​hour check-​up it was great to experience Jocelyn’s positive energy and see her skill in handling newborns.
She continued to give me advice on natural remedies to help heal during our postpartum visits, and actively followed up with us to make sure we were on track for visits and that everything was going well. I highly recommend Jocelyn for any woman seeking an intelligent, skilled, no-​nonsense, compassionate midwife.
