Another store on Burnside street in Oregon actually originated from Seattle, WA. Blackbird, may be a familiar name Ballard residents in Seattle(or any properly dressed person) may have heard of. It is a selective boutique carrying clothes from brands and designers such as Rick Owens, Obey, A.P.C., Comme Des Garçons, and Alexandre Plokhov to name a few. Blackbird Portland may be an off-branched store but it still carries quality products over quantity.

Hey you poorly dressed hipster dudes sporting lumberjack shirts and skinny jeans. There is a fine little boutique that can help you: Blackbird. Please grab your wallet and GOSHOPPING! As for me, I am deeply in love with the French perfumes for women by L’Artisan Parfumer. In particular, Fou d’Absinthe and Méchant Loup are just dreamy. Those are my two favorites in case anyone out there wants to buy an expensive present for me. There is a fine selection of dreamy perfumes for men of course as well… so you hippy dudes do not have smell like patchouli.

Ever been to the Blackbird in Seattle? That place is a men’s clothing and accessories Mecca. Seriously: no drippy D&G sunglasses passed off as ‘stylish accessories’ there. Just really good stuff at reasonable prices. And, it keeps getting better. The store just added Rick Owens and Inaisce to its roster of already fantastic designers, making it an even more tempting(if bankrupting) place to go. It’s nice to see that the company successfully replicated the Seattle store in Portland. It’s clear that this location is the ‘little brother’: it’s a much smaller space with a much more limited selection. But, still, each and every piece hanging on the racks or displayed is meticulously chosen, cleverly designed, and expertly manufactured. Some examples of great finds: A Robert Geller leather bomber for $ 500(fits like a glove) A Pria scarf for less than $ 100. And on, and on. And the sales people are incredibly helpful without the snotty, judgmental attitude we’ve all experienced at other high-end boutiques. Excellent, excellent.

«We want people to come and hang out. It just so happens that we sell clothes here.» That’s a philosophy I can get behind. Their Portland store is but a shoebox-sized reminder of their larger SEA haunts, but they’ve curated some great pieces that make them worth visiting. It just so happened that I caught them while they were airing out a few racks of their remaining Fall/Winter merch and even spotted some reasonably priced finds. My eyes were darting here and there that it wasn’t until I hit the dressing room that I noticed the«door» was no more than two full-sized parachutes hanging down from the ceiling. I like your style, Blackbird.

One of the only spots in town that wont turn you into a turn of the century lumber baron or a hand me down syndrome victim. The merch is well presented with the cheaper staple brands occupying one side, and the more conceptual/artisan brands on the other. The staff is helpful, engaging and knows their product. One less plaid.

Men’s clothing that thinks in Portland is a rare breed. Culture here promotes thrift and sloth, a studied indifference. Most travel to SEA, SFO, LAX, JFK, LHR, NRT, even KHH and find thinking clothes there. Blackbird is an iconoclastic Ballard outpost serving clothes in Portland. They have refined sport jackets to pieced casual jackets, pants and other. There are less than 10 decent men’s clothing spots in little, but design-oriented Portland, and this is one.
