Our little old ’89 Honda Accord LXi with 252K+ miles on it lost it’s door handle on the drivers side a while back and we were getting all flustered crawling through the passengers side to open the driver’s side door. The window stopped working too, so it was time for a repair. I took it to my regular mechanic (Broadway Imports, and they rock as well!) and he said they didn’t do body work but recommended Dan at Atomic Auto Body.
So, Monday we had an appointment to get the work done (replace the door with a $ 50 craigslist door) and went in. Well, once Dan got into the door, he found that the regulator (thing that moves the window up and down) was missing teeth and he would not be able to put that in my cheapo CL door. «How much?» I inquired. «$ 175 for a used one.» — «Damn» I mumbled under my breath, «Okay, go ahead and do it.»
So later that week, we went out to pick up the car and I was totally expecting the charges to be over $ 300, since the original estimate was for $ 120 and then the regulator added in for $ 175, plus the additional labor. But I was floored when he told me it was only $ 242 since he found a less expensive used regulator. How many times does your final bill come in less than the estimate? No many in my lifetime.
Dan was a consummate professional, a pleasure to chat with, and did a bang up job (forgive the pun!)
