When i finally got around to following up on a doctor’s advice from a few years ago to get myself checked for an allergy to bee stings, i ended up seeing Dr. Montanaro at OHSU’s Allergy and Immunology Clinic. Dr. Montanaro is an Attending, so the first person i talked to was a Resident working for him. Much like the role a nurse often fills, i talked to her about why i was there, my medical history, and such. She took notes, went to discuss it with Dr. Montanaro, and a few minutes later they both came in. Dr. Montanaro and i talked for a few minutes to make sure he understood the scope of my prior allergic reaction, then he explained why he thought it would save everyone some time, money, and discomfort to skip actual allergy testing. He made it very clear that if i wanted to do the blood test, they’d be perfectly willing, but he was confident that i’m at very low risk for anaphylaxis(severe, life-threatening allergic reaction) and probably shouldn’t worry about it. He gave me advice on how to avoid future exposure, how to treat myself if i do get stung, and encouraged me to take a prescription for an epi-pen just in case things got out of hand(multiple stings, etc). After that, he even took a few minutes to discuss my two minor food allergies. He talked about how people with one allergy are at higher risk for the other, so it’s not coincidence that i have both, and so on. Really, i learned a staggering amount in my 30 minute appointment _and_didn’t have to get stabbed or scratched, so i’m pretty happy with it all. Dr. Montanaro is friendly, helpful, and willing to take the time to make sure you understand as much as you want to.
