I hired Mr. Alvey after learning he is a top-​rated workers’ compensation attorney who is highly-​regarded in the medical and legal community. His small, specialized office put me at ease. I was pleased that he remained sufficiently attentive regarding my case even after his term began as President of the Oregon Trial Lawyers’ Association. He was respectful, compassionate, generous and wise. The office was technologically up-​to-​date. He made efficient use of time. My questions were answered fairly quickly by e-​mail. He was a tactful leader and expert navigator through the system. He is a strong and practical advocate for workers. This role clearly aligns with his deeply held beliefs and experiences. He is confident, yet also kind, which allowed me to develop a comfort level in speaking with him about a difficult situation. Due to more than 35 medical appointments in which scar tissue was scraped from tendons, it became necessary to file a claim to cover medical bills, although I’ve continued to work full-​time. I was found to be permanently partially disabled, due to poor ergonomic conditions in an understaffed work environment, during the recession. Mr. Alvey and his motivated staff helped me deal with SAIF and the WC system, achieving the outcome he articulated as the goal. He responsibly balanced other obligations with my case and I, in turn, respected his time. Hiring him was an excellent decision. (Please note that I previously worked as a prosecutor in another state. As a current government employee, I do not engage in private practice, though I’m actively licensed in Oregon. I did not know Mr. Alvey or anyone in his firm personally or professionally before researching his credentials for this case and hiring him.)

I had done my research prior to retaining Martin Alvey and felt, at the start, confident in having him as my lawyer. I had understood that Mr. Alvey would be representing me in my workman’s compensation claim, keep in contact with me regarding my case and respond if I tried to contact him with new information. However, I was sadly disappointed and let down. My experience was that I was left in the dark regarding my case and he would not respond to me or offer any direction as I was trying to maneuver workman’s compensation. If I did speak with anyone from his office frequently, it was his receptionist because I was trying to get him to address my Workman’s Compensation challenges. My goal was to try and gain some input from a lawyer I had retained to (and I use this term loosely), «represent» me. To have him basically ignore me and my situation, during the majority of the time he was suppose to help me, was demeaning. Almost 2 months went by where he did not respond to my e-mail’s or phone calls and I had to finally schedule a phone consultation with him where he offered very little insight during that brief conversation. A short time later, because he did not want to be bothered by me (and possibly my case was not going to bring him too much money) he had his assistant, Michelle, inform me that I had to pay his office $ 200 so he would be able to talk with my WC doctor. I did not understand this because the case was on, of course, a contingency. I was appalled by the way in which Michelle, who is suppose to be a professional, spoke to me. This interaction only added to my growing feeling that Mr. Alvey, nor his assistant, cared about my case. In the end, I received a certified letter from his office (one week prior to a scheduled IME of which Mr. Alvey was aware of), informing me that he was too busy and would no longer be representing me in my WC claim. I was truly left hanging. Because of this, and more, I do not recommend Mr. Alvey. If he was too busy, he should not have agreed to represent me in the first place. And, because he did have a legal and signed agreement with me, he should have honored that agreement.

I would click zero stars if it were possible. This man is an egotistical jackass. Don’t be fooled by his website or whatever referral you were given. This man is a sorry excuse for an attorney and I wish I would have followed my instinct the moment I met him. Instead, I hired him to help with a workers compensation claim for my grandfather. He NEVER did anything and after two years, I finally fired him. I was forced to withdraw the entire claim because by that point, my grandfather needed surgery so bad that we couldn’t wait to hire another attorney at postpone the hearing once again. (Most doctors won’t perform surgery while workers comp claim in pending). I tried numerous times to get him or his office to respond and the only time they contacted me was when they wanted to delay the hearing — again and again — and never had a reason to other than he wasn’t doing ANYTHING on the case. I listened to the audio tape of the only deposition that was conducted in the TWO YEARS that he was supposedly working on the case — and he blew the entire depo with his arrogant attitude. Instead of cross examining the doctor and getting to the real truth that would help us – he walked out of the depo pissed off at the doctor because she had met with the opposing council without telling him. The last email I sent to him told him exactly what I thought — «you have failed us not only as an attorney, but as a fellow human being». This case should have went to a hearing and my grandfather should have had the surgery literally 1.5 years prior to the time I fired this incompetent person. Instead, his condition worsened as we waited and waited for this attorney to do his job. I won’t even go into the unprofessional attitude received from his office staff. PLEASE whatever you do — find some other attorney that will actually help you. With this arrogant man, you are nothing but a number and a paycheck. He has NO desire to help you.
