I’ve been searching for a yoga class where I don’t have to arrive 10 minutes early just to get my mat in a good spot. Alma offers the benefit of a community-minded atmosphere, a beautiful space with exposed brick and wood floors, and classes that are calm, small, and personalized. Right now their prenatal yoga classes are offered Tuesdays and Fridays from 10am-11am and they’ll be adding an afternoon class soon. Drop in rate is $ 12/session or 6/$ 60, on par with other studios minus the chaos of navigating full classes or readjusting your mat to accommodate latecomers(pet peeve!). During this gentle yoga class, the instructor Kiersten offered an explanation of the modifications I should expect and how to use the props(the bolsters are quite large cushions here). She let me know to avoid deep twists and bends as a pregnant person, especially in the third trimester. We also discussed breathing techniques to help both mom and baby become more centered. Most of the class was spent on the floor but we did some sun salutations and gentle bends. Nice long sevasana with different options offered. Class lasts about 60 minutes, and although we didn’t do any vigorous stretches my body felt balanced and invigorated after the session. I felt that it was a good balance to the back pain I have been experiencing in the morning after an uncomfortable night of sleep on our pillowtop mattress. This is NOT a class for someone who wants a more power-centered practice. This was slow, gentle, breath centered movement. Mats and props available to use in studio. Tea available in the back room, and a GORGEOUS bathroom. Other classes available: Group acupuncture clinic, Radicle Movement, Postnatal yoga, Birthing from Within, Hypnobirthing, Yoga Way to Birth, new mother groups… wellness classes include Vaccination Education, Postpartum Survival and Cloth Diapering, Cranio-Sacral Therapy and Hearing Screen, Breastfeeding Basics and Early Postpartum, Mama Acupuncture Group Clinic, Fertility Awareness, Tiny Talkers Baby Sign Workshop I’d highly recommend Alma to mothers-to-be… I just hope the classes don’t start to get too crowded! I am enjoying the small numbers.
