Mike’s Barber Shop is pretty much the only game in town(Port Townsend, or anywhere else around here) when it comes to men’s haircuts, it seems. He’s an actual barber, which just means he knows how to cut a guy’s hair well. It’s not his side job, and it’s not just something he does every now and then. He’s a pro. I tried calling before walking in, just to make sure he was open, but got voicemail, so I drove from PT to his shop anyway. There were 3 older(in their 70’s) men in front of me, and since I’m in my late 30’s I was a little concerned that he’d be able to do my style, even if it’s not that complicated. I didn’t want to end up with a combover and some eyebrow trimmings. ;) Thankfully, I wasn’t disappointed. The shop is pretty basic. A bunch of chairs, mostly folding with a couple more comfy ones available, all facing the center of the room where the barber chair is. Apparently he used to cut in the little side room next to that, but his wife now does women’s hair on appointment and she needed the sink. So, he moved his chair out. It actually makes the time there a little more entertaining as you get to hear and talk with everyone there if you want. I wasn’t feeling super talkative, so I brought a book to read. Nobody bugged me when I was reading while I waited, but everyone was kind when I popped a joke in every now and then. In the end, Mike listens to his patrons, both about life, and about the cut and style they want. it’s not the fastest haircut I’ve had, but around here, that shouldn’t be a concern anyway. And he doesn’t use styling product from what I could see. But the cut was perfect. Exactly what I wanted done. If you want a place for guys, this is it. If you want to experience a legit barber, Mike’s the one. If you don’t want to pay a lot, but still get a great cut, I don’t think you’re going to find a place in this county that will beat Mike’s Barber Shop.

What can I say? Mike has been giving great haircuts for more years than I know, and I’m always totally happy except for one thing… He charges too little! His shop is walk-in first-come-first-served, which sometimes gives me time to read his collection of newspapers or humorous books(some written by his father!) Mike is old-school, which in my book means Quality and Value.
