We meet again Mr. Minotaur. I finally had the opportunity to explore their meat selection while shopping for some grilling options and dinner ingredients. Five NY Strips for around $ 60 seemed pretty fair and these steaks were not for the faint of heart… at least an inch thick and nicely marbled without being grisly. Honestly, everything behind the glass looked fantastic! The London Broil selection was impressive for a small market, rest assured. I also picked up some of their sausages… a couple cheddar brats and a couple everything brats. They cooked up nice and had some good flavor. They have a decent amount of necessities like potatoes, onions, grill marinades, sour cream, cream, etc. in case you didn’t feel like going onto town but you’ll pay a little more here. The staff was really friendly and helpful and I was happy to part with my money for what I received here.

Walt’s is the go-to place when we’re up in the Caseville /Port Austin area. It’s walking distance from the cottage, so we frequent this place more than most. It’s a good place to stop and pick up the essentials. Usually the«essentials» mean ice and beer, but it is what it is. I’ve been wanting to stop in and purchase a steak for quite some time and I finally had the opportunity to do so last weekend. I got the sirloin. It was a bit pricey at around $ 10/lb. but it was excellent. The cut was gigantic and about 2″ thick. The whole thing weighed about 2.25 lbs so I had to have them cut it in half, which they actually suggested when I commented on how big the cut was. Anyway, brought it home, grilled it, and ate the leftovers for breakfast. It’s good stuff. At first I thought the slogan«Nobody Beats Walt’s Meat» was just a gimmick with a little innuendo, but I’m a firm believer now that nobody truly does beat Walt’s Meat… except maybe Walt when the wifey is out of town. Solid selection. Excellent quality. Worth paying a little extra to come here over the grocery store. You won’t be disappointed. They do have some extras here, but this isn’t a place where you’re going to do major grocery shopping. Meats/Deli, they have what you need. Snack food, there are some options, but it’s not extensive. Basically, you’re looking at meat/deli, snacks, beverages(sans liquor), and some of those bare essentials that you might find at a gas station — first aid, bug spray, toothpaste, etc.

If your already a summer resident of the greater Thumb Key North area then I’ll bet you already know where to pick up high quality choice meat for your grill and deli items to round off your table… you go see Rick and Lynn. It’s a given… end of story. We have seen this couple take a former sleepy butcher shop and transform it into gourmet grocery with the Chutzpah that can match a big city meat markets.(Just a little smaller) The staff is friendly(and typically family!) and these folks know what they’re doing. The«Nobody Can Beat Walt’s Meat» sign greets you has you pull in the parking lot just outside of Oak Beach about 7 miles north of Caseville. Sometimes you have to wait to find a space but that’s OK because this is meat nirvana. Standing Rib? Filet Mignon? Please. How about regular chuck hamburger that never, and I mean never! flames up on the grill because its so lean. Bacon Sausage. OMG…its so good the Florida snowbirds order it to-go cryo packed on their way back down I-75. It’s the only place we know north of Imlay city where you can get a hot Panini sandwich to go. The quality is scary good. Rick and Lynn take this business extremely serious and it shows. Because of their uncompromising quality and level of service deems Walt’s Meat Market the«Best Gourmet Grocery in the Thumb». P. S. As a side note, listen for Lynn around the noon hour on WLEW for the Walts ad. Lynn did her time in radio in the Grand Rapids area and she has kept her voice in top notch shape.
