The owner of Marin Sun Farms, David Evans, was our tour guide, which was a really great way to learn about the farm! He covered everything — from their process raising and feeding their animals to their business model. You can tell that David and his team are passionate about sustainability and it’s very eye-opening to hear it from the owner himself. Over two hours, we saw ducklings, chickens in various stages, pigs, horses, cattle and the hen coop. We ended the tour by ordering burgers from their café(about 5 minutes away from Roger’s Ranch) — gotta admit that the tour made us pretty hungry and wanting to try out their grass-fed meat! The burgers hit the spot. You need to schedule a tour in advance from their website(group size averages around 15 or so) and they only give tours on Wednesdays from 10am-12pm. Their tours take roughly the entire 2 hours and you walk through the farm, so wear comfy shoes and dress in layers — the farm is 3 miles away from the ocean, so it can get cold with the constant wind!

We went on this tour a few years ago. It was interesting, but I think reading The Omnivore’s Dilemma will give you a vivid picture of a well run, grass fed farm with happy chickens scampering about. We were promised a lunch at the end of the tour. I was expecting fabulous meat on the grill. .. what we got were sandwiches. And there were not enough to go around. He’d gotten more people signed up a few days before the tour and supposedly there was not enough time to order enough sandwiches. What ended up happening was that people were not entitled to one got one. I shared mine with my companion — with no partial refund. And the were about as exciting as a vending machine sandwich. The tour guide does an excessive amount of talking — it was becoming tedious.
