The wines here are alright. Great customer service! The guy who poured our wines told us a about the history of the winery, which was pretty interesting. I forgot the name of the cat, but he/she is so adorable. I was looking forward to taste the sparkling raspberry but they ran out of stock :/hopefully when I come back they would have it.

Stopped in as part of a limo tour/bachelorette party. Hostess was slow to warm up to our group but we enjoyed the wines here. After a full tasting, the group consensus was that the California champagne was the best and we left happily with more than a few bottles.

They have a wonderful Primitivo and Old Vine Zinfindel as well as probably one of the top Barberas in the area. My first experience visiting was over the top fantastic and I’ve been suggesting it as a must stop for all friends visiting the area. However, they have been less than thrilled with the experience at the tasting room and the last two times I’ve been there with friends I have also had a less than wonderful experience. I have felt largely ignored and even when me and my party have been the only ones at the tasting bar. So I give the wine 4 stars and the experience 2 stars.

Excellent wine but they are a very small winery. I think some people are judging them too harshly on their service. They are doing the best they can do with the size of the room they have and the staff they have on hand. If you want faster service, don’t go on the weekends. However, if you like good wine and are a little patient, it is worth the stop. The 5-star rating is based solely on wine quality. ;)

First time staying in a B&B so it was a new experience for us and I must say, the pictures on the website really don’t do the accommodations justice. Our room was lovely, appointed with antique furniture, luxurious linens, and most importantly, a bathroom with 2 sinks, and a huge shower with more than enough room for 2. I can’t imagine how Pam and Jerry managed to do so much with their B&B guests and 2 days catering to the droves of attendees of the annual«Big Crush». Nine Gables is in close proximity to Taste, a 5 star quality restaurant with the most amazing Foie Gras and famous«mushroom cigars» not to mention some fabulous California wines. We enjoyed our time at Nine Gables, and would recommend to family and friends. Thanks Pam and Jerry, hope you guys, get some much needed rest, and more importantly no rain.

The wine is good, but the service was lackluster. The lady pouring seemed annoyed at having customers(and there weren’t very many people there). Upon arrival, guests are presented with a «check list» reminiscent of a sushi restaurant. No descriptions, no notes, just the name of the wine and a line next to it. When asked if there was another sheet with descriptions of the wines, our host responded with a simple, «Nope. You’ll have to hear those from me.» Okay… but she never provided any commentary on the wines she poured. There was more talk amongst the guests. Overall the wines were fairly good, but we won’t be going back. Cheers!

Crowded on the Sunday, nothing really stood out for me and I didn’t by anything. Nice location and a nice winery dog. Wine hostess was nice but not very attentive. Shrug. I wouldn’t come back.

Monday morning, off to bad start. The owner was on computer when we arrived. Got the impresion he was not ready for guests. Continued finishing without saying anything to us… Butt heads in conversation over the wines. Husband says give him the benefit of doubt, maybe he was up early harvesting grapes. Everyone has a day like that sometimes. Nice selection of wines to taste. Bought 2 fun wine glasses. Observation after visiting many wineries over the years, but really about any place of business, the front line people can make or break you with their attitude.

We came here to check this place out for a wedding. Wine was eh, ok I guess. Wine hostess was not especially friendly. I wouldn’t come back or bring people here.

This is another favorite of mine… The Zin here is fantastic. The last time I went wine tasting here with friends we left with almost 2 cases of wine. The husband/wife who work here are very friendly and will take the time to answer all of your questions. Their labels are pretty cool — they have their weimaraner Hannah on it. When we went tasting our dog was in the back of the truck and they said we can take her off the leash and play a bit and run around in the vineyards while we had a picnic lunch. This is a great winery that is off the beaten path — usually you are the only people tasting at the time so it makes it more personable.

After«always try the guide’s second choice first,» «going off the beaten path» is a sure way to find something interesting and different. After numerous recommendations from the Rt. 88 wineries, I detoured through the Shenadoah Valley to see what was up, and to perhaps stock up until the next ski season. And, it’s indeed a beautiful place. More rural and less exurban than the drainages to the north and south, it captures quintessential wine country ambience but with a titled geography and rougher climate than the North Bay tourist sights. It’s also more popular than I would have guessed, despite being a dead-end in terms of major through-routes. Several of the wineries are quite large, with restaurants, event pavilions, and packed parking lots full of tipsy folks driving large vehicles. But I looked for small buildings surrounded by mature, working vineyards and other agriculture – the least-beaten paths off the beaten path. The first place I found was Nine Gables. A small tasting hut next to a larger(nine gabled?) home, it’s cozy, earth, and genuine. The tasting staff was friendly and knowledgable, and clearly had years of experience making wine and not just running a tourist destination. The tasting was free and extensive. I stuck with reds, working my way through a Mission wine(unique to the area), good Zins, excellent Syrahs, and a few interesting secondary varietals. Prices were in the teens through the $ 20s. The spicy Mission and the older Syrah had really unique flavors and stood out the most, and unlike many small wineries in the area, the quality was consistently good across many styles.
