Went here for my mother-in-law’s birthday. There were 13 of us– 4 kids and 9 adults. The service was pretty good! Despite all the reviews here, the server did a decent job and all the food was delivered at the same time(as it should). It was a bit odd that she didn’t ask us if we wanted to drink anything besides water. But we managed. For appetizers, the calamari was good. It doesn’t include any tentacles and the rings were tender, not rubbery. The bell peppers and onions with it were just right. They do include this vegetable dish thing that looks straight out of the 50s, or basically some ice dumped into a small ceramic vase you bought from a garage sale and figured–«hey I’ll put some vegetables in here with some dip.» The dip is awesome but the presentation might make you think otherwise. The hubby and I both got the prime rib. It only comes in 16 or 24 oz — it was gigantic. It came with veggies(tomatoes and green beans). The portion is the only thing that justifies the cost because it wasn’t the best I’ve ever had. A couple of people ordered the halibut and I wish I had ordered that instead. The total was around $ 220 for both of us. We skipped dessert since the cake was waiting at home, but I’d try some next time. Most likely I’ll return for another special occasion, but wouldn’t necessarily be my spot of choice.

Do not let the NEON shiny sign scare you away! the food is A MAZING! oh dear Lord! When I saw the neon sign I almost told my husband to turn around. I decided not to. He came here in the past, years ago and he did not remember the food. I figure it was another chef because the food we had last night he would remember for sure!

Hap’s is a nice classic steak and seafood house — a perfect place to celebrate a special occasion. We celebrated my hubby’s b’day here. We started off with a kale salad topped with beets, goat cheese and pecans. My hubby had the bone-in rib eye with brandy peppercon sauce, and I had Hap’s signature prime rib — both came with a side of green beans, red bell peppers & onions. We shared our beef entrees with our daughter and sides of mashed potatoes and macaroni & cheese. The steak and prime rib were cooked perfectly and tender. The sides complimented the steaks well. We were full from dinner, so no extra room for dessert. The service was friendly and attentive.

Local favorite steakhouse. Ribeye and prime rib are my go to choices. Big portions, OK sides and prices on higher end. Stars are for steak only.

Took my wife here for Valentine’s — we hate crowds so we always go before or after Valentine’s Day. I had been to Hap’s one time before and thought it a nice place to take my wife for a nice relaxing evening. I made a reservation and we were seated fairly quickly upon arrival. Since they had open booths it would have been nicer to sit there than next to a support pole. We ordered the a Cesar salad, bake potato, and 16 oz prime rib(med) for my wife. I had the wedge salad, bake potato, and 16 oz prime rib(med rare). Her Cesar salad was good, bake potato perfect, and prime rib cooked to perfection. Unfortunately the vegetables were under cooked on both our orders. My wedge salad was mostly the biter part of the lettuce which was a disappointment as I have had it before and the dressing watery. the prime rib was more on the rare side than med rare. Also, why are your servers taking the bread prior to the end of the meal. Ours came by took it and was gone before I could say that we weren’t done. Frustrating. When I am spending over $ 100 for a meal I expect good service as well as good food. I was generally disappointed and hope someone from Hap’s actually reads these. I wil think twice before going here again if I don’t here something back. One last thing was that we had the crème brûlée… it was excellent.

Best steak and prime rib that we have had in Bay Area. Eight of us went in a Tuesday night. Each person said best steak they have had in long time! For what we had prices very reasonable. Great wine list too. Best steak in Bay Area bar none!

My family and I have been coming to Hap’s for many years. The quality of food and service has historically been decent, but nothing stellar and certainly not at the level that a fine dining establishment requires. But more problematic, the prices have been creeping up noticeably and steadily. And now Hap’s, like everywhere else in the Bay Area, is straight-up gouging their customers. On my last visit to Hap’s I had the 7 ounce filet and lobster tail combo. The charge? $ 117 for the filet and lobster alone! Not including any drinks or appetizers! That is absurd, Hap’s should be ashamed of themselves, particularly considering the presentation and quality/taste of the food was nothing spectacular. I have been to many restaurants with much better food and even ocean views that don’t charge that much. Visit any chain steak restaurant, and you will get the same experience for half the price. I imagine Hap’s management aims to squeeze as much money out of this tech bubble as possible. That’s fine, you got me good on this meal. But no more, we will not be returning, not one more dime out of us, and I suggest the same for all my fellow Unilocalers. Peace.

Really bad, drive to walnut creek and spend your money there at any of the chain steakhouses. It is a disgrace how poorly trained the servers are. That is not there fault because it is management that dictates restaurant culture. Bad

Usually love this place. Tonight, not so much. The steak was cooked perfectly but the cut was just ok. The disappointments were in the offered Oscar Style option that tasted like it came out of a powdered packet mix and the sub Applebees service. My drink sat empty twice on the edge of the table for over 15 minutes and I wasn’t asked if the food was satisfactory for nearly 30 minutes after it was served. A bit useless to ask at that point don’t you think ? Utterly unacceptable for a 200 $+ meal for two in my view.

Unfortunately, average food and inattentive service would make me spend my money at another place. Steak houses should have pieces of meat that you can cut with a butter knife and seasoned perfectly — which mine was not. Green beans on plate were so tough, they were deemed inedible which is a huge bummer as they are my favorite vegetable. Our banana ice cream dessert was something that could be made at home and had three times too much ice cream on it then bananas and caramel. Server couldn’t remember the specials so when asked he would have to go ask the kitchen and then relay us the answer. Thank goodness we had a table by the kitchen as it was the only way to flag him down for additional beverages or other items. Attentiveness is a huge bummer when you are spending a chunk of change.

Overall, this restaurant is just not worth it. My experience started off well; I had a reservation for five people and the table was ready when we arrived. Hostesses were sweet and welcoming, ambiance in the front area seemed cute. We were escorted into the back space, which lacked some of the intimacy of the front dining room. The lighting was really bright on the tables, and it was all larger groups(although the restaurant was not even close to full on a Saturday night at 7pm). Our server was nice, but you can tell he took no time to understand the menu, or the specials. For the price of this steakhouse, I’m expecting a certain level of service, and this guy just did not hack it. He rarely showed up to check on us, mis-plated our meals for dinner service, didn’t know details about the menu when we had questions… it was fortunate that we were seated near the server station so we could ask others for some help when we needed it(i.e. sides, more wine, etc.) The food was just«fine.» Not good. Not great. Not memorable. The brussel sprouts tasted like the ones I make at home. The rib eye’s needed salt and seasoning. Prime rib was not flavorful. The salmon, which was $ 36, was farm raised. REALLY? It is clear that the quality of the product they are serving has no measure of importance to the chef. The deserts were very subpar. One of them was really two scoops of ice cream with half a banana and a cone with caramel on the bottom. I could get something more flavorful at a basin robbin’s for ¼ of the price. Looking for steak? Go somewhere else. I’m definitely looking for a high quality steak house in the area. Stay tuned…

Just returned to this restaurant after a few years. Sad to see that it has lost it’s «old-school» charm. Enviro seems sterile and lacks the ambience of yesteryear. Staff also seemed less hospitable. Sad to see the transformation. Ordered filet medallions as an app and was given one small slice of meat. Will not return. One good thing; Manhattan cocktail was good.

This is not the Hap’s of golden days! Grocery, not even close to it. The old Hap’s used to be a really serious watering hole with decent food. Now, they have become a very pricey steakhouse. In fact, I’ve been told it’s the most expensive place in town as such, we were expecting a terrific steak dinner. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. My wife and I had a reservation and we were warmly greeted and seated promptly and everything looked like it was going well. Our server, Shane, was extremely cordial, knew this menu well and was very professional. We started by splitting a Caesar salad and they split the salad in the kitchen for us and put the anchovy on the side because I like it and she doesn’t. It was a nice version of this classic salad. The anchovy was a very high-grade product. It didn’t have the salty-harsh taste of the cheaper products. I had a cup(served in a large shallow bowl) of lobster bisque, one of the soups of the day on the menu. It was very rich and it was okay — but not outstanding. It would’ve benefited from being a little bit hotter. I felt it was a bit tepid. After a reasonable wait our entrees came. I had a medium-well, bone-in, 22 oz. Ribeye Steak. She had the seafood special of the day, Grilled Sea-bass with a fancy, strawberry/Beurre Blanc Sauce, served on the side. My steak was excellent! But, I had onion rings that were very greasy and when I tried to eat them, the coating fell right off of the onion and it turned out to be very messy and difficult task to eat. My steak came with green beans, carrots, and white onion that were supposed to be sauteed. But all the vegetables were still raw and tough. What a disappointment! My wife’s Sea bass was pretty good-sized portion and it was nicely grilled and seasoned perfectly. It had a nice flaky, firm-flesh texture and moist. We also ordered a side of Potatoes au Gratin and a Mac & Cheese. The mac & cheese came nice and bubbly hot. The, potatoes, however were somewhat tepid — so cool, that the cheese on top had congealed — another disappointment. We finished by splitting a Cranberry/Apple Crisp with ice cream(double scoop) and coffee. Imagine our surprise when we discovered that the apple chunks were way under cooked in the crisp. We left all of that and just ate the ice cream, the sauce, crust and the cranberries. We brought with us a nice bottle of Malbec. The corkage fee was $ 20. For the kind of prices they charge, I should have sent the underdone and cold items back to the kitchen but then we would have ended up waiting for them and the rhythm of the meal would have been interrupted several times. Besides, it was Saturday night, the night before Valentine’s Day! So, we let it go. Clearly, the best parts of our meal was the salad and our main entrées. Everything else was far from being good or right. We were disappointed to say the least. Our bill, before tip, came to $ 160 for the two of us. The only reason I give this three stars was the service. It was excellent. Shane and the staff were really good. So, come for the steaks and enjoy the service and forget the rest. Jim

Hap’s is the best! First, the food is consistently good. This is one of those places where you can order anything on the menu and be confident that it will taste perfect! Second, the quality is amazing. When you go to Hap’s you know that your meal will be of the best quality available. Finally, the staff is always friendly. Part of the reason that I enjoy eating at Hap’s so much is that there is such a good vibe in the restaurant. It is just a happy place full of nice people. If you are going out for a nice dinner, this place will not disappoint.

My date and I recently came to this beautiful restaurant for my birthday last night. When we arrived; we were seated immediately. The food given to us was veggie platter with bread and butter; those are delicious. I wonder what the sauce is for the veggies. Maybe secret recipe! We ordered the New England Lump Crab Cakes for appetizer;those are so delicious; definite recommend. My date ordered the Garlic Scampi Prawns with mashed potatoes and macaroni n cheese! I ordered the roasted plank king salmon with mashed potatoes and green beans. Both of these entrees were so delicious. Everything was perfect! My alcohol beverage Peach Bellini was very delicious; I had two of them. After our entrees were done; our waiter surprised me with a birthday cake; OMG; phenomenonal chocolate cake. Worth every single bite! It is definitely a romantic restaurant with a touch of elegance. I would recommend it to those who want a birthday, romantic evening or just enjoy good food with great company. P. S. Our waiter gave us five star service; I forgot his name too! OMG!

Old school service. This place beats every steak house from RC to Harris Ranch. My BaBa and I go here at least once a month just to luxuriate in great food and old fashioned white-napkin service. Whether you’re dressed to the nines or have less than a dime in your pocket – these folks treat all people well. Sides are great, steak cooked perfectly at your preference, expansive wine list and baby – don’t even THINK about going in there and not trying that«scrimp» cocktail. It’s better than The Ritz In Tahoe. So the next time you feel like you want to invest some time and good eating for yourself, by yourself or with someone else – gone on down to Haps – it’s short for happy times!

This is the place to get a good ribeye steak. Meat is perfectly cooked, flavorful, so moist. It comes with sautéed vegetable. Delicious! We had other items on the menu, the food is absolutely fabulous. French onion soup very good. And not to forget, yummy dessert too! Nice atmosphere with elegant touch and not a typical noisy steak house. Good wine selection. The service is good, very pleasant hosts. Location: Pleasanton downtown We will be back soon!

Hap’s. Oh Hap’s. How I wish I could come here more often. Sadly I can only come when I travel for work, which really isn’t fun travel. But it’s wonderful to have such a good place to come after a grueling day of conference room imprisonment. Start with a sidecar the moment you come in. They’re fantastic. Savor the first few sips before you even look at the menu for your dinner. Just relax. The restaurant is comforting and inviting. Even when full it’s pretty quiet. Not starving and just want a snack or a small bit to eat? I’d go with the Four Onion Soup au Gratin. Absolutely smashing. Broth is rich, the onions are perfection and it’s the perfect amount. Need a little more than soup, but not starving? The mac-and-cheese is where it’s at. This isn’t Kraft Dinner, this is cheese heaven in a bowl. Get it. Take the rest home. Still hungry? Of course there is amazing steak. Cooked to your exact temperature. Tender and full of flavor. The center cut filet mignon has never failed me. Ask your server to bring a wonderful wine with any of the food you order, they will bring some that pairs deliciously(their wine list is huge, if you know wine, then I’m sure you’ll find something you want. I like to try new things and be surprised, so I leave it up to them). Sadly I’ve never made it to dessert. I just eat more mac and cheese. Maybe next time!

We were in town for business and downtown Pleasanton is always a great place to grab some dinner. I’ve walked by Hap’s countless times but never had the opportunity to dine here so I was happy to finally be able to eat here. Food: There were two of us for dinner. we started with the Oysers on the Half Shell and the Lump Crab Cakes. The oysters were fresh, smaller variety(the waiter didn’t mention what type of oysters they were), excellent to start with. The crab cakes were meaty, not oily, crispy exterior, and perfect on the inside. On to the main course. I went with the 16 oz Prime Rib, it didn’t occur to me until I was half way through my meal that I realized that 16 oz of beef is quite large! I powered through though since every bite was tender, juicy and delicious. We skipped dessert though as neither of us had any room left! Service: Classic steak house service, very attentive, always checking on our table to see if we needed anything or to clear dishes. Food came out quickly, every course came out as ordered and served at just the right time. Atmosphere: Larger interior than what appears on the outside, the atmosphere is not the typical old time, dark, all wood, steakhouse. Classy, elegant, but friendly and approachable. We felt comfortable, well taken care off, and able to dine at our own pace. Value: Pricey but not overly so. I find this to be right in line with other establishments of this quality. Overall: Great steaks, good appetizers, great wine selections. I’d return in the future if I’m back in town!
