My mother and I have been to the Morning Star Mercantile & Café several times. The building is quite charming especially the back room overlooking the gardens. It’s a very nice place that we always visit after visiting another favorite location called The Farm. We always enjoy looking at the beautiful items that are for sale in the General Store that is located in the café. We usually really enjoy going to the café. They have a beautiful fireplace that would have been wonderful to have a small fire in it on a rainy day… they had one small token candle burning in it today. Oh well… Today we had a sampling of two soups of the day cream of broccoli and another special of the day. My mother’s was pretty tasty however I wasn’t impressed by mine. I had the smoked turkey with provolone on a Kaiser roll with mustard and mayo. Not impressive… the turkey seemed if it was from a package… I may be picky but the mayo and mustard was in a package that I had to put on… and the whole affair was served in Styrofoam. The high point of the sandwich was the fresh tomato and the good bread. My mother had the BBQ beef on the Kaiser Roll. She really liked her sandwich. She also ordered apple spice cake and took it home to enjoy later. Overall, this wasn’t as good as an experience today as usual. I think the reason was the waiter that was out front with the public. We came in a bit later and the overall feeling was that he wanted to get out of there. We also overheard his conversation about«making money». I also am irritated that he referred repeatedly to his female customers as «girls»…All of the ladies in the restaurant were well beyond the ages where he should have been calling us girls. I spoke with the staff about the situation with eating off foam and they said it was due to the septic system in the town… so be it. They said I could ask for dishes the next time… I’m not able to take my mother to lunch often and I really like it to be special when we go somewhere… when I’m back out this way again I may try this place again… let’s hope I can remember to ask for the«real» plates…
