First off, one thing to know about Metro PCS in DFW — they now operate as a MVNO(mobile virtual network operator) selling service on the T-Mobile network. This is slowly being rolled out nationwide, now that they’re owned by T-Mobile. They no longer sell phones that operate on their own CDMA network in DFW(and the few other markets where they sell«Bring Your Own GSM Device» service), and they’ve promised to shut down their CDMA network by 2015. I’m fine with this; in my opinion GSM is a better technology, and tends to get the newest phones first(and you can buy unlocked phones — something you can’t do with CDMA). You can bring your own phone(either unlocked GSM, or locked to T-Mobile), which is awesome. They’re also really, really cheap — as of right now, $ 60/mo gets you unlimited everything, including 4G data. Nobody else can beat that. Since they’re now putting new customer’s on T-Mobile’s GSM network, coverage, at least in DFW, is fantastic — it’s identical to what you would get if you were a T-Mobile customer. With that out of the way, I’ll begin my story. I went to this store today to port my number from T-Mobile to Metro PCS, to save a bit of money. Yeah, I know, I’ll still be on the T-Mobile network, but Metro has more attractive rate plans. I figured I’d walk in, buy a SIM card, they’d do some paperwork to port my number, and I’d be gone. 15 minutes, right? No. When I walked in, the 3 employees behind the counter were chatting about a party they’d gone to. No biggie, I’ve worked plenty of retail, it was a slow time. Except every time they had to interact with me, they’d continue chatting about their weekend, and what they were going to do this weekend. I stood there trying to hand them money for several minutes(after they’d told me how much the SIM card would be) before the one helping me finally said«oh, are you ready to pay?». They did get my number ported, and got incoming and outgoing calls working before I left(something that can often take a day or two when porting). But she handed me the phone and said I’d need to wait 72 hours for data to start working. I picked up the phone and it showed a strong signal including data, but sure enough, nothing. Turns out she didn’t bother changing any of the data settings; they all still pointed to T-Mobile’s proxy servers. Which, even though I’m technically on T-Mobile’s towers, since I’m on Metro, I need the Metro PCS data settings(specifically, the APN settings). Overall, not happy at all with the staff in the store. Just glad I won’t ever have to deal with them again.
