We recently discovered this campground through a friend who goes here often. The campground is well taken care of by the camp-host. The camp-ground is small and is a dry camp area, although there is water spigots available(just not for filling of RV units). There is also outhouses available. The small camping ground that provides camping for both tents and RV’s, yet the area is appealing as it is located right next to the river… nothing better then being soothed to sleep as you listen to the water rushing over the rocks. The camp-host by the name of Jean and George are fantastic caring people! Although they leave you to have your privacy for camping, they are very caring and nice people. We had encountered some problem with our vehicle and Jean and George offered us advice and help. They were very compassionate and understanding people. My husband and I would love to be able to spend our whole summer at this lovely little camp-ground if we could. Not just for the beauty of the camp-ground but also because the camp-hosts truly love what they do and care for people.

It’s a good alternative camp ground for a short stay before you head somewhere else. It is low-demanded(i.e. available spots) and on the way to Tahoe(20 – 30 min before). Pros; Close by the road(Lincoln Highway) Availability of spots($ 18 per night) Relatively well maintained by the manager Nice location with a beautiful creek and immersed within tall pines and other trees. Cons; You hear the traffic. The folks are BBQ-Beer stereotypes, so expect some smell and noise. The toilets had a strong smell, too, so make sure your spot is away.

I was expecting to camp at China Flat off of Silver Fork Road last weekend but it was closed. Even the the NFS office said it was open. So I either had to find another campground or camp in the forest. Since I didn’t have a fire permit I had to find a campground. I drove past Sand Flat but the sign also said closed. However, I could see tents and trailers down by the river so I took a chance. Yep, the campground was officially closed, but you could still stay. For FREE. However, there was no water or garbage service. Oh No! How tragic is that! So I selected a spot, which was right on the South Fork of the American River, and made camp. The site, while on the main loop, is private since there is a bridge between it and other sites on one side. the number will stay my secret. Maybe when you go you’ll find it based on my description. There are plenty of water spigots, for when water is running, and a few pit toilets available. As usual, no reservations, pets are allowed, and they sell firewood at the camp host. Right down the street is Kyburz where you can get gas and groceries. Some of the sites would be awesome in the hot summer as they back right up against the river. Although it may be dangerous when the river is running full. I’d love to come back here in the summer but it may need to be a mid-week visit as I would expect this place to fill up quick and early. Oh yeah, this is bear country but there are no bear boxes. Plan on storing your food in the car.
