I spotted this tiny BBQ restaurant on my way home one day but couldn’t stop. 5 days later, I’m going past again and saw a sign out«BBQ Today» and I had to stop. I’d had a sandwich just a couple of hours previously, but I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to try a new BBQ joint — figured I could always bring some home for my fiancée(who likes a good BBQ, too). Man, I’m glad I stopped. Ruby’s has only about 10 tables(and a couple outside, as well) but they do a good takeout business. Their specialty is barbeque — they’re closed on Mondays and Tuesdays(they do their smoking on Tuesday) and serve Wednesday through Sunday. The traditional trinity is available there — spare ribs, pulled pork and brisket. Their platters are served with good sized helpings of potato salad and coleslaw, ALL made from the owners’ family recipes. They have other things on the menu, but I’m afraid I only had eyes for the BBQ. If I had to sum it up in one word, that word would be either«Yum!» or «MORE!» It was all delicious. The ribs were meaty, big, smokey and flavorful. The meat was falling off of the bone. The potato salad was made with egg and celery, and though I don’t normally like potato salad, I found myself finishing half of it. The coleslaw was good, too. Colleen, the owner(Ruby is their pup!), had no problem wrapping up the leftovers for me(my fiancée was appreciative of it when she got home, too!). When I mentioned that I was going to be coming back with my fiancée, she told me that if I wanted to be sure they didn’t run out of anything before Saturday night to call her and let her know beforehand. I made my call the next morning and I’m glad I did — mine were the last ribs in the place on Saturday night! Our housemate had the brisket on Saturday night, and I tried a bite of it. Most places manage to make brisket way too dry to be palatable — NOT Ruby’s. It was wonderful, and next time I’m there I’m going to have the brisket sandwich. Comes with sauteed onions on top of it and it was great. We also split a basket of the hand-cut French fries — I’m running out of superlatives here, but they were great, too. It’s a 50 minute drive each way to get here for me, but it is SO worth it. If you like BBQ and you’re near Pittsford, VT, stop in. You won’t regret it. Oh — nearly forgot. They also cater — we may have them do our wedding next spring. Yeah, they’re THAT good.
