I had an odd experience at Plum Garden. There were some good things that went along with the bad. Pros: The food is undeniably good. I ordered the filet mignon and scallop hibachi and everything was fresh and seasoned to perfection. The chef was also very friendly and entertaining. I ordered a drink called the Yokohama and I would’ve drank 2 more had I been given the time. This is where the cons come to light. Cons: The waitress was always in a hurry. As soon as we sat down she somehow expected us to know exactly what we wanted to order. As soon as the chef was done cooking, she handed us to-go containers. I’ve never experienced anything like this. She had zero patience and there was no excuse for it. There were plenty of open hibachi stations and no one waiting to be seated. Plum Garden is not a cheap place to eat, so I expect a great experience. Customers should never feel rushed. When defining a good dining experience, customers look at the quality of food and service. I will not be returning to Plum Garden.

Five Facts About Our Trip To Plum Garden: 1. If I had known sake bombs were that cheap, I would’ve taken 2 – 7 more. 2. Our hibachi chef looked exactly like Manny Pacquiao. 3. Even after I specifically asked her not to embarrass me, my wife STILL couldn’t catch a rice ball in her mouth. Right to the forehead, every time. 4. You better believe I got an onion volcano. 5. True to hibachi restaurant form, they use way too much salt and butter, and everything tastes good as a result. They also give you entirely too much food, which makes for excellent leftovers the next day.

Hibachi is fun, and pretty good. Come for the entertainment, chefs are all funny, friendly, and talented!

One of my favorite hibachi experiences! The restaurant itself was beautiful it had wall that was like an enclosed waterfall. The atmosphere was fun and upbeat. Our chef was very entertaining doing the standard onion Fire volcano and knife tricks. He threw shrimp into everyone’s mouths at the table super fun! The food was amazing as well I ordered the steak(the cheapest one on the menu) my boyfriend got the chicken. It was very good. Very big portions I was full even before I got my steak! Overall would recommend very good food and entertainment!

Please note, their website and door say they close at 9:30, but if you are there past 9 they start taking your food away and giving you the bill to pay so they can get home. The food was decent, our chef was nice but not super skilled, and they weren’t great at getting us drinks. Our chef also made a huge deal after one of my friends asked for water, apparently angry that someone would be so stupid to ask someone in his position for water. We will not be going back. There are many more hibachi places we can go to, with better waiters, better food, and less pushy staff.

Love this place! Good food, fair price and the service is okay. Always a great place for a group and fun. Food is always delish and enough to take home left overs.

One star for my average hibachi experience. Normally I get my sushi fix from Sakura Home. It’s pricey, but it’s always been good quality and it’s close enough to campus to drive to easily. This time I took a few of my friends from school to Plum Garden. I saw that it was a bit cheaper than Sakura Home, and it was just slightly closer to campus. The sushi was fucking atrocious. Our waitress demanded our orders after merely a minute of sitting down and getting our waters. It then proceeded to take about an hour for our rolls to come out. When they did come out, it was only the raw rolls we ordered(we had ordered 2 – 3 tempura fried rolls). When we asked when to expect our other rolls, we were told a few minutes, only to have them arrive 45 minutes later. What we received was beyond inedible. I wouldn’t feed this to my worst enemy. The tempura rolls were completely burnt. The salmon in the Plum Garden roll was so rotten smelling, I picked it out of the roll before eating some of it. The seaweed in the roll was so burnt, it stuck like tar to our teeth. We then had an extensive wait for our bill. According to another waitress, our waitress was unable to be found. Awful service, awful food. Eat at your own risk, it’s probably worth spending the extra money and going somewhere else.

A decent Japanese restaurant with a capacity to hold large groups of people. Quality of food isn’t all that bad either. Although I prefer another smaller restaurants in the town vs. Plum Garden, I would recommend Plum Garden if you have a large group with you. Make sure to make a reservation as this place gets packed during restaurant’s usual peak hours!

Food is good, service is very disappointing. 1st problem was getting seated: we waited at least 45 mins when we were told on the phone just before arriving that it would be 20 mins. There were several groups that arrived after us & were seated more quickly — we were a party of 4. I’ve done hibachi before & it’s always looked like a cat-herding type of business to me what with the staff trying to place enough people at a table for a single chef but getting passed over was really unfair. 2nd problem was drinks: dinner orders were taken, salad & soup were served quite a bit after. Drinks came about 5 mins after our soup & salad — should’ve been brought out first. 3rd problem was the wait for our chef — about another 45 mins. Over 90 mins before our food was even cooked for us after we’d 1st arrived. 4th, the chef seemed bored & unprepared — he had to leave at one point to get more chicken & wasn’t nearly as entertaining as other hibachi chefs I’ve had. Other tables seemed to be having a better time than ours. Food was good but I’ve had much better — other places are much easier on the soy/tamari sauce so what I had was very salty.

I have not been to Plum Garden in at least three years due to moving down South. I was looking forward to sushi with my family but we had to leave early because our sushi order was never made while one of our main dishes was served and done with. Never received our app but did receive our salads and drinks. Very disappointing when we would have spent a lot of money there. At least they forgave our bill.

I stopped by for lunch with my sisters, mom, niece and nephew after spending a few hours at color me mine. We were super hungry and didn’t want to go far so ended up here. I had a bento box which was pretty standard, and nothing to write home about. The tuna roll tasted a bit fishy so I was skeptical. The others mostly had bento boxes as well and thought they were okay. One sister had their sashimi and sushi lunch which I thought was well-priced for the amount of fish. The scallop and salmon sashimi stood out as being very good. Service was lackluster and everything seemed to take awhile. I’d say there are plenty of other spots to go to in the area, but it wasn’t terrible.

And I’m still finding rice in places that don’t belong. Plum is a fun atmosphere and actually a pretty decent place to break the ice. Great place to go with friends/family, but also a good spot to bring new faces. The catching of rice balls, onion volcano, and a variety of other tricks turns your dinning experience into a mini culinary show. The steak and lobster or scallops are always superb — but if your looking for the more traditional chicken and fried rice they have that too. You get a lot of food so come hungry, and enjoy :)

I was fairly excited to visit this restaurant. It’s in a nice plaza in Pittsford, NY. After sitting down, a good 5 minutes passed before our drink orders were taken. For starters we ordered the Kaki Fry which was delicious. I’ve had this appetizer many times around, but this was the best. Came in 3 very large breaded oysters. It comes with a tonkatsu sauce which wasn’t brought over. Sharing plates weren’t brought over either so we tried our best not to have the juices and crumbs fall on the table. I then ordered 3 rolls, the Dragon, Unagi Oshizushi, and Fujiyama along with nigiri; which were the Toro, Fluke, Salmon Roe, Tuna, Yellow-Tail, Scallop, and Mackerel. My partner ordered the Yosenabe. A good 10 minutes later her soup came, and then a good 22 minutes passed and all the sushi orders came together. I thought it was awkward for me to stare at my partner as she eats and then finally receive the sushi portion as she’s halfway done. When it comes to sushi, I’m very critical. The nigiri was nicely formed and the rolls as well. Having tried the first few pieces of nigiri the rice threw me off. It was slightly mushy. There wasn’t a distinct smell or anything, but it definitely had a bad texture. I happen to come into a night they had Toro which is a cut from the fatty part of the tuna. It came with a price, but definitely worth it. Again the rice beneath ruined it for me. I was better off ordering my nigiri as sashimi. I also want to point out the fluke was fishy and didn’t taste fresh. Other than that, I didn’t have a problem with the other nigiri. After finishing the sushi, I tried some of my partner’s Yosenabe. I asked her what she thought of it, and she said the salmon was dry which I agreed. It’s strange to have a piece of salmon which is swimming in broth to be dry but it was. The vegetables were also a bit too crunchy and needed to be cooked slightly longer. The broth itself is fantastic. Very aromatic and flavorful. I want to point out our Server(which I won’t name) never once checked up on us to see how everything was going. Didn’t refill our drinks either. To be fair, I will say she did come off as a kind person. As I’m looking around at the other tables, I can see other customers staring into space as their companions eat. If there’s one thing I can say I really did like, it’s the actual interior. I think it looks great, and nicely decorated and arranged. For the price, service, and overall food quality, I wouldn’t return.

Another five star experience at Plum Garden. Went again for Doug’s birthday — a party of six, and everybody enjoyed themselves! Joseph was hands down the best Hibachi Chef experience we have had and we will try to request him when we come back. Only thing — wish they would work on the décor a little more. The water feature in the waiting area is grimy and the seats in the waiting area have duct tape on them. I’m not a fan of the dishes, either… but I’m just being picky. Food is fantastic, we’ve been three or four times and have yet to be disappointed at all.

I don’t think Ive ever left a bad review on Unilocal but, here’s my first! The last time I was here was a year ago and everything was great on the normal dining half. I went this past weekend to the hibachi half and it was the complete opposite! Our reservation was at 830, we arrived at 815 and got some drinks at the bar up front. We were finally seated at 915 which was already ridiculous. We spent 15 minutes chatting with the people at our table before everyone started to become aware and annoyed because a server hadn’t come yet. I told the host and a serve came five minutes later only to rush us through the ordering process because we had been waiting… I already knew what I wanted so I didn’t mind but, not everyone at our table was ready. 20 minutes later and no food had come yet so my date and I left. It was disappointing to say the very least. I’ve never had such terrible service. We will not be back.

So my first Hibachi in Rochester, I have only been to some in California and was really skeptical towards trying one in Rochester. A good, pleasing Hibachi is hard to find! But I guess I have found one! We were a party of 7 and didn’t have to wait for other people to fill the table. Our waiter took orders shortly after we arrived. One problem was that while we were waiting for the chef to come and get started, they began cleaning the adjacent cooking area, smell of bleach was really bothersome. Based on other Unilocalers’ reviews, I decided to go with filet mignon and Chicken. Other people in our party picked filet mignon and lobster or shrimp. The chef was quite handy. We were amused with his performance. The fried rice was so good I could just have it as a separate meal. The filet mignon was awesome just as my Unilocaler friends had suggested. The one star I am taking away is mostly because of the attitude of the staff. They were just rushing and as a result I did not feel at ease, neither did the other people at our party. The food though was quite good.

Oooh… What a letdown! It will be a hot day in December before I venture in here again. First off, we were seated in an unheated area, which, upon observation, must’ve been their modus operandi since I noticed other patrons wearing winter coats. Odd, because they were sitting around hot hibachi cooktops. Food was a letdown… Fried rice was served waay before the vegetables, and my wife had to wait till our food was served till the chef realized that she had no food.

It’s been years since I’ve been here and I am pleased to see that it’s been remodeled with new décor. The bathroom is a big improvement from their old stalls and the stone walls add a nice touch. Next step would be to get new carpet or fully go with hardwood floors because there’s still a stench soaked in the carpet. We had the sushi lunch which came with six nigiri pieces of tuna, white fish, red snapper, salmon, crab, and shrimp. It also comes with a California or tuna roll, but we substituted for the spicy tuna roll at an additional cost. They didn’t skimp on the pieces of fish like some other Japanese restaurants do, but the fish didn’t knock me off my chair either. They have limited lunch selections and few specials. Also, they didn’t have white tuna, one of the best melt-in-your-mouth fish. Service was okay during our lunch hour. Our waitress was attentive at the beginning, but we had to ask another waitress to get our check. The table next to us had to ask for their waitress just to place their order. I think PG is one of the oldest Japanese restaurants in ROC. Nowadays, there seems to be a surplus of them. I think they are still one of the best when it comes to their hibachi shows and tricks.
