Petland Pittsburgh Village of East Side

I got my dog here as a puppy. I was so happy knowing that he was a rescue and I was thrilled to be able to give him a good home. My only regret was that I couldn’t take all of his brothers and sisters too!

Just received rude and unprofessional service from staff here. A manager yelled at my daughter, accused her of ignoring our dog’s poop (my daughter hadn’t seen it, was busy trying to pull the barking dogs away from the other dogs). Stormed out and yelled at her. When my daughter explained that she hadn’t seen the poop, manager tells her she saw him dragging the dog away. Then walks away while my daughter tried to explain. And when I confronted her, she accused my daughter of lying!

So let me preface this by saying that I actually like this pet store for buying supplies. I have a cockatiel, and this Petland offers a variety of different products that are high-​quality and hard to find at the «big box» pet stores.
However, they really don’t understand smaller critters. We wanted to get pet rats, and were hoping to get a pair of females. When we called in, they said they had female pet rats, so we came over to take a look. They had a boy rat (caged alone) and a girl «rat» (also caged alone). They took us in back to show us the feeder rats, too, but they’d been caging the boys and girls together and we didn’t want to take the risk of getting a whole lot more rats than we have space for. But we didn’t like seeing the rats caged alone (they’re social critters), so we bought the little girl «rat» without getting a super-​great look at her (she’s small — they told us she was a baby). When we got her home, it was pretty obvious that she’s a mouse. We called back and talked to the other employee, who says he «thought» she was a mouse, but that he might have been wrong.
I don’t understand what they thought was going to happen with them? Either somebody would have bought her, thinking that she can be kept alone (not true) or would have put her in a HUGE oversized cage with improper bar spacing (like we did at first, though thankfully we had a setup with better bar spacing). She’s adorable, for a mouse, but she’s definitely a mouse.
So, to recap: they failed to correctly identify the species of the animal we purchased, which we purchased in part because we felt bad about the conditions it was being kept under. If that isn’t the basis for a one-​star review, nothing is.

This is my preferred pet store when I’m not buying anything heavy (I walk everywhere so I have to get my litter and food from Big Box stores). Petland has comparable or better prices for cat supplies compared to the Big Box stores. Anytime I had a question or needed help finding something, the staff was accessible and knowledgeable – I like that I didn’t have to search very far for a staff member or have to poke around looking for the correct supplements.

Being the crazy-​dog mom that I am, it’s about time I write a review on what I can undoubtedly say is the best pet store within the city limits. The staff are pet-​owners themselves, very knowledgeable, and super-​friendly.
They carry products that I haven’t been able to find at the Big Box pet stores, such as Blue dog food and Zuke’s treats. I’ve also found their prices to be comparable and sometimes lower than the Big Box stores. I always get great coupons to use there in the Clipper Magazine, making it even more affordable.
Petland is chain, but locally owned and operated. All the animals housed there are from area shelters, which is great! If you are a ‘Burgh Pet Mom or Dad, check out Petland for sure!

This is an OK pet store. The only real reason I went there was because it is near Trader Joe’s. It was convenient to pick up cat food after going to get groceries.
This is a small store with not as many products to choose from, when compared to Petco or PetSmart. The prices are higher than those stores as well. It’s in a good area, so the convenience factor is high. I imagine that they could special order food for you, but at that point you should just order it off Amazon.
The staff is usually fairly friendly. If you have any questions, they are typically helpful.
The best aspect of this store is that they have dogs and cats from the animal shelter that are up for adoption. This store used to carry dogs from puppy mills, and after frequent community protests against this store, they changed their ways. They discontinued buying and selling puppy mill animals, and began adopting out the shelter animals. So cool! Apparently this has been very successful for them as well. They’ve gotten a lot of good press for this positive change as well. I refused to shop at Petland before they made this change.

I received excellent customer service from this particular Petland. I was approached by a friendly and knowledgeable salesperson who asked if I needed assistance, which I did. I was looking for a particular cat food brand which they didn’t carry but he offered to order it for me. I opted instead to ask about other brands; he offered up what he used for his cats and told me about some others, as well (and I subsequently purchased). He even gave me samples of a premium brand to try. You can’t ask for any more service that what he gave. Top notch in my book!
