My husband and I drove from Portland to have Ed take us on a moose safari via canoe. We didn’t get to see enough moose on our Alaska trip last summer, so were really hoping for moose sightings in the moosehead lake area. Our safari was a success and we were up close to two moose while in the canoe! Ed is a great guide — highly recommend him over some of the corporate outfits in the area. He was very accommodating by driving the last 2 hours from his place to the canoe launch & the conversations just flowed. Would definitely hire Ed for any future adventures in that area of Maine — he also does waterfall tours, ice caves, various wildlife, etc.

On my birthday I had to wake up at 5AM to be ready for my present: an 8 hour moose safari and waterfall hike. Owner and tour guide Ed Mathieu picked us up at our hotel in Greenville and off we went into the middle of nowhere. The day was amazing! We first stopped at a pond where we crawled into a canoe and paddled around for about 3 hours looking for moose(mooses? meeses? moosi?). Straight away we saw one breakfasting in the pond on some delicious water plants. We got so ridiculously close to her I thought she was going to charge us. Then we glided across the water and around a corner where we saw a male moose promenading along the bank of the pond. All in all we spotted 4 that morning, and all the while Ed was explaining their lifestyles, mating rituals, growth patterns and various local information to us. It was SO cool. On our way to Moxie Falls we stopped at a massive beaver dam, which also blew my mind because it was 30 feet long and looked like it could have been made by man. crazy. The ride to the hike was a long one, but worth the wait. The hike was really easy and the views of the waterfalls were amazing, especially since it was raging after such a rainy spring and summer. Ed provided us with breakfast muffins and coffee, sandwiches, raisins, apples and water for lunch, and an all around great breadth of knowledge about the area. He’s also lived and given tours in Arizona which was cool so we talked about my new home town a little too. A perfect birthday adventure. I highly recommend Ed’s services if you are in the market for moose safaris!
