I had the most wonderful experience adopting my Sasha. The information on the website was informative. The adoption process was very complete and I have learned a lot about what this wonderful organization does for these wonderful animals. The day I visited, was the most wonderful experience for me and my Rizzo. We were warmly greeted and our visit with Sasha was warm and friendly. The volunteers are loving and knowledgeable and work to match the right animal with their new forever family.

Sasha quickly adapted to our family life and she is so loving and sweet. When I think about how the puppy mills treat these precious animals, it makes me very sad.

I have recommended NMDR to my friends. I would love to add more babies to our family, but at this it is not possible. Keep up the great and wonderful work you do!!!

My husband and I had a heartwarming, soul-​touching experience while visiting National Mill this past weekend. From the VERY beginning of the process, it was so smooth, yet thorough, and everyone has been so kind! We received an immediate response from our adoption counselor, Ann, which was so comforting and refreshing. She is the absolute best! When walking into the rescue, we were immediately greeted! We were given a tour by the lovely Cheryl. She was so informative, gentle and passionate. My heart melted. All of the dogs are so well taken care of and loved. National Mill is the epitome of what rescue should be. We will be back to adopt! I will recommend this rescue with confidence and passion. If only I lived closer so I could become a volunteer! I bow down to you all and thank you from the bottom of my heart.

We had such a positive experience even just applying to adopt with NMDR that we traveled over 2 hours to go see their dogs! We are from Boulder County and tried some dog-​rescue organizations closer to home but they proved much more difficult to work with. After our application was received by NMDR, we were promptly contacted, given literature, and told next steps to find our new adoptee. (Still waiting on word back from Farfel’s, grrr.)
The kennel was clean and positive-​feeling with many pleasant workers and volunteers. The dogs were even bathed and groomed (for the most part). We were given lots of time to meet and play with all the potential adoptees and so felt like we were never rushed and therefore encouraged to find the «right» one.
After we adopted, we were given a prompt follow-​up from them asking if everything went well in the first day and if we had any issues or questions. We were also given further information on behavioral specialists should we need it for the future.
Overall, we were VERY pleased with this experience. We will recommend NMDR to others who are looking to adopt. Thank you!

True heroes, in my book! this organization rescues former breeding dogs from puppy mills. Many of these dogs have lived their entire lives in small cages, only to be discarded when they get too old or too sick to produce puppies any longer. Once they are rescued, they will get vet care and grooming, rehabilitation, socialization, and love! They find homes for the dogs, and even provide access to an animal behaviorist to help with any issues. They have rescued thousands of dogs from puppy mills, who otherwise would have been discarded without ever knowing what it is to be a beloved pet.

NMDR fights the uphill battle of rescuing mill dogs — those used for breeding, puppies from them, education about puppy mills — and re-​homing those dogs so they can live the rest of their lives in freedom. Many of the dogs they rescue have never walked on anything except a wire cage.
National Mill Dog Rescue was founded by Theresa Strader after she rescued Lily, a Greyhound used for puppy mill breeding and so neglected that half her mouth was rotted by disease. Read her story before you head to a pet store or un-​investigated breeder. Reputable breeders exist, but take some looking to find.
No review I can write does this place justice. Please look at their website for more information on what puppy mills are, and why you should never buy a dog (cat or bird, for that matter) from a pet store. They look cute as puppies, but they more often than not have health issues, or are doomed to a slow and painful death if they become ill. Don’t create the demand for these dogs.
