It was awful. Everything tasted like packaged food. Never again. Clearly its fat people food and those around can care less. But I care and you should too. But hey it’s new jersey.

I’ve been coming to this place for years! Although they do serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, I suggest you come here for the breakfast. I usually call ahead of time to avoid waiting in line. This place whips up the best omelettes in town. The home fries are tasty and all their meats like the sausage and bacon are very fresh. They are not cheap, but they are not expensive. Breakfast is going to run you about 8 bucks, but worth every penny. If you come here hungry you will not leave disappointed. The only gripe I have is that the staff is not the friendliest, but that’s probably because they are always so busy. I called the other day to order breakfast and after placing my order the waitress said«That’s it?» and hung up on me, as if I was wasting her time. The food is good enough here for me to keep dealing with the unhappy staff tho. Order a cheese omelette with sausage and home fries, you won’t regret it. Go Here!

This is a great place for chili dogs, something of a local secret. I’ve eaten their chili dogs for over a good 20 years now; as I recall from my childhood, there was once a larger«Coney Island» restaurant but I think it was destroyed in a fire. The dog itself is not all that different from Rut’s in terms of flavor and quality; it’s just cooked on a roller. But, their chili is really very nice! I do prefer it over Texas Weiner on Rt 22.

Furthering my quest for comfort food in the form of hot dogs, I had this place bookmarked and here I am. They have a nice amount of counter and table seating. Seems like a great place for standard eating in the neighborhood. One note, it’s metered street parking so bring some quarters. I ordered 2 Coney Dogs which have mustard, chopped onions and chili. They were cooked on rollers but they were nice and hot to the point they were splitting. Mild chili sauce but good. The dog itself was thick and the bun was steamed. Washed it all down with a can of grape soda. Ahhh. Solid dog, solid price($ 2.10 each), solid place. I’d like to try again and sit at the counter next time. Muy bueno!

Yesterday I was in Perth Amboy. I had heard about a place serving hot dogs called Coney Island something or other, so I looked for it. The place is called the New Coney Island Restaurant. It’s actually been around for years and was called the Coney Island Restaurant. New refers to either new owners or renovations that were done. I think it’s the latter although the place looks like it’s out of the 1940’s.
It’s an old time looking luncheonette with a long counter. When I saw hot dogs on a roller grill, I almost walked out. Since I was there, I figured I would stay for a few dogs. I’ve heard about this place years ago and from what I read somewhere they have a reputation for good chili.
The dogs are 8⁄1 skinless Thumann’s beef/pork grillers. Despite being prepared on the roller grill, they were hot and tasted good. The chili was excellent. Thick, and not as hot compared to the Plainfield area Texas Weiner joints that grill their dogs and serve a thick, spicy chili. The chili here is in the style of places I’ve been to in New York in and around Newburgh and the Hudson Valley. I’m sure it is like many in PA as well.
It was almost identical to the chili at the Coney Island Restaurant in Middletown, N.Y. which is one of my favorites. Also reminiscent of the chili homemade and given out by John Sagi of the Gourmet Chili Dog site at some of the Hot Dog Tours in the past. I love this chili but Middletown N.Y. is too far to travel to regularly. Now I can enjoy it when I’m up to travelling 15 miles.
The New Coney Island Restaurant is located at 192 Smith St. in Perth Amboy. While I would prefer a natural casing frank prepared on a griddle, these dogs were hot and tasted very good. Went well with the chili. The casing and char imparted from a griddle isn’t as significant if the dog has toppings. Regular dogs are $ 1.60. With mustard, chili, and onions(Coney) $ 2.10 which is good for an 8⁄1 served on a quality steamed bun. And they are generous with the amount of chili. I think there is a special of 2 Coneys with fries and a soda for $ 5.99. I’ll definitely be back.

Flavor, this place has it. Very good coffee too, in the coolest little cup with a hot dogs on it(see my pic)! Delicious dogs and curly seasoned cheese fries. Yum. You can sit at the counter in the front and watch the cooking on the big open grill or go in the back and sit in a booth. When you’re done take a stroll down Smith Street and stop in for some fun 99 cent shopping!
