Hoeckele Bakery

Stopped in to get a box of goodies before a recent business meeting. Of course, I had to sample something myself! They have an enormous selection of baked goods at a very reasonable price. I had a pastry that was quite tasty! The atmosphere isn’t anything to brag about. I would probably return if I were in the area again.

Let’s begin with a classification. Deli, I don’t think so but they do have pickles. Sandwich shop ok I’ll give them that. Not very good sandwiches but technically it was a sandwich. Jimmy Johns does it better and compared to this place any Subway is a gourmet sandwich shop. Bakery, ok but not much selection and what selection they have is doughnuts! Décor Army Mess Hall circa 1955. You go up to the counter and there is a large and varied menu with pictures of sandwiches just not the sandwich you actually get. We ordered the special staff seemed friendly and helpful. Once your order is in you pick a table think Army 1955 and a short wait later our sandwich was delivered in a cloud of green funk. Apparently locals don’t use deodorant or bath that often. The sandwich was a miniature representation of the picture on the wall. Microscopic portion on a fresh but tasteless bun. There are tables covered with repackaged snack mix and peanut brittle. The snack mix must have come with the army furniture it was as stale as a Donald Trump speech. You have been warned.

So far I’ve always been happy with everything I’ve gotten from here. I’ve had breakfast sandwiches that were filling. Donuts that were the closest thing I get to my hometown donut shop. And I’ve ordered 3 cakes from here that were reasonably priced and beautiful. In fact I’m getting another one on Saturday. Love me some Hoeckeles!!!

I’m one for second chances, which is why I came back in for the peanut coffee cake on the way back from my trip. It was super cheap at $ 1.80 for a least six servings. Cutting it up, I noticed that the amount of yeasty coffee cake was super thick with a thin layer of frosting on top, and the peanuts were scarce. The best comparison of eating this coffee cake was like eating a dry yeast donut and wishing you had another layer of frosting. Of the two parts of the coffee cake – cake and frosting – the frosting was more tasty, but I didn’t get enough of it!
Sorry, Hoeckele: I gave you a fair shot… but I still like your huge cupcake sign out front.

Great deli and outstanding bakery. They have chocolate covered bacon for goodness sake. Staff is very helpful. Will be back again.
