Poor excuse for Italian food, but it is very cheap. If you’re looking for authentic Italian this is not the place, but it has some decent things on the menu.

Good food but not worth the 1 hour wait. Nothing spectacular. I still can’t believe I was charged for plastic forks and knives with my order. This is a first for me and the $ 0.40 charge is a joke.

The gondola was to die for, fresh bread very good portions. Salad was amazing. Must try this place of in Peoria.

Upon walking in, this place kind of reminded me of a nice diner as opposed to a fancy pants Italian restaurant. The complimentary bread which came with the meal lived up to the hype– it was hot, fresh, soft, and a little bit sweet. My friend and I split the appetizer sampler, buffalo chicken wrap, and the fish sandwich(the latter two were priced ridiculously well considering their size — under $ 5 each). I especially like the fish sandwich. We had leftovers to take home. I’d probably recommend ordering something with a little more greenery; I felt like I was carb loading. They do have several options that include a side salad.

Gondola subs — the only thing I have ever eaten from Avanti’s. Very simple sandwich served on fresh sweet bread. Not sure what it is but I love these sandwiches! Whenever I’m in Peoria and Bloomington I always grab a bag of these subs!

Another eatery that is popular with the BU students. The bread sometimes come piping hot, and a great amount of butter on it is pretty good. Soft and a little chewy. I always get their Chicken Parmigiana, and the chicken is juicy, covered with crunchy breadcrumbs, topped over spaghetti noodles with marinara sauce, and baked in the oven. Great portion, and fills your Italian food cravings. I’ve also had their mozzarella sticks, fried mushrooms(juicy and delicious), and their Gondola meat sandwiches(great slathered with mayo and mustard, and long enough to eat for 2 meals, at least). Free refills, friendly service, and a very simple and a casual Italian place in Peoria. +Chicken Parmigiana +Gondola meat subs

We used their delivery service. Although the pizza was good, it was not worth the 1 hour and 20 minute wait!

I was not very impressed with the food from here. Despite the fact this restaurant was recommended to me, it was less than a satisfactory experience. I would say this restaurant was mediocre at best and while the service was relatively fast it was not up to the standards I expected as was suggested in the recommendation.

This place serves your basic Italian dishes, ravioli, chicken parmesan, spaghetti/meatballs, etc… I tried the chicken parmesan. This dish is more along the lines of spaghetti and meatballs, where the protein accents the pasta. The chicken was over powered by the amount of pasta on the plate. The sauce was mediocre. The service was very good.

I used to hit Avanti’s in the early 80s, when I lived in Peoria. Famous for their sweet bread on the Gondola sandwich! They had fantastic food then, and they’re still around so, I guess that says something.

I don’t understand the rabid love that Peorians seem to have for Avanti’s. Even with my expectations set low, this missed the bar. My distaste for the sweet bread aside, I found the salami in my sandwich less than unappetizing. The wings were soggy. The pasta sauce is incredibly, disgustingly sweet, which is maybe the key to its popularity. Eat frosting out of the can on a regular basis? This place is for you! Don’t trust any place that sells pasta and sauce by volume.

They have good garlic bread and gondolas. Pretty much anything could be improved by Avanti’s bread. The lasagna and thin crust pizza are pretty good, too. I try to steer clear of trying new things here. It’s just SO cheap that I keep coming back. I may be artificially giving this 5 stars because I can’t believe no one else had. How can you beat something that tastes pretty darn good for as little as you pay for Avanti’s?

No, this is not fine Italian dining. The prices are great, service is decent, their Asiago cheese ravioli is good and their pizza is pretty tasty, too. Lots of people rave about the sweet bread. I can take it or leave it. I did get to try the bruschetta at the Knoxville Ave. location and it was surprisingly good. If you’re looking for quick Italian fare at a steal, this is your place.

Avanti’s gondolas are a Peoria institution unto themselves. I don’t have as high an opinion for their Italian fare, but their gondolas are one-of-a-kind, perfect for large gatherings or solo meals, and, in my family, frequently requested by out-of-town relatives. I especially love to take advantage of their combo deals, which give you the option of sampling a half of a gondola, chips and a drink for $ 5 – 7 bucks. Not bad, not bad at all.

Avantis Italian Restaurant is the world famous haunt located in Peoria, Illinois. What is it known for? Its super yummy Gondola sandwiches… Who else could take the simple«ham and cheese» and turn it into a watery delicious masterpiece for your taste buds? The bread is what makes the Avanti sandwich a faaaaaar step above the rest! The restaurant offers a full range of Italian delicacies for your over eager tummies, but the ONLY product you should focus on is the world famous Avanti Gondola. HOWEVER… the ONLY Avanti establishment you should visit is the original establishment located on Main Street(right across the street from Bradley University) in the lovely city of Peoria.

Many of us when thinking about«drunk food» think of burritos, pizza, beer nuggets(if you go to NIU), Pokey Stix, tater tots… the list goes on. But when visiting friends at ISU or Bradley, I think GONDOLA! The Gondola is such a simple and satisfying sandwich on a long loaf of Italian bread with only ham, salami, cheese and lettuce, What better way to soak up all that alcohol after a long night of drinking? If you’re not into the«simple sandwich» thing, Avanti’s also has other alcohol-soaking and meatier sandwiches like Italian Beef, Meatball or for the vegetarian drunk, the grilled cheese(get two; you’ll thank me!). If you’re not into the sandwich thing at all, there’s pizza and other Italian fare. When I think of Gondola, I not think boat in Venice. I think sandwich!
