Kevin and his staff are the best. Food is excellent — recommend the chicken soup

Sugarcane is consistently delicious, never a question about the quality or taste! We eat here or order takeout at least once to twice per month, if not more. The owner Kevin is friendly, the bartender makes the best drinks(go for a mai tai or lychee martini), and the servers David and Nick are super attentive and quick. You really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu! For appetizers, I suggest the chicken lettuce wraps, fresh rolls, scallion pancakes, beef teriyaki, and shumai. The egg drop soup, tomato egg drop soup, wonton soup and hot and sour soup are also delicious. For entrees, you can’t go wrong with the make your own dish, where you choose your protein, vegetables and sauce. I also recommend the Crispy Aromatic Beef, Triple Delight, General Gao’s Chicken, fried rice, lo mein, and I could keep listing. Definitely some of the best Chinese food on the north shore!

Decent vietnamese food. Good Phở and vietnamese shrimp salad. A good replacement for Phở Lynn which closed down :(Did not try the chinese food. Place is clean inside with good décor. Service was a little slow. Will go to again.

Before we leave for SF, we were looking for a place that sells phở. But the phở here is nothing like the Vietnamese phở we were expecting. The soup wasn’t right and the bowl is extremely small for the price.

Ok. I’ll start with the good. The food is phenomenal. The dining room has absolutely zero soundproofing. It’s loud. Compound that with crying children, and it amounts to us leaving. On a tangent, if you have children, stay home, find a sitter, or keep them quiet. As an adult paying full price at restaurants, I don’t want to hear or see your children. Got it? I ordered a Mandarin Mai Tai. This was awful. Our waiter was like the Micro Machines guy. Everything was a hurry in some bastardized version of English. I asked him to slow down, this provided the opposite result as I wished it would. We had our order boxed up and are now enjoying it on our couch. Overall, a very unpleasant experience

I’m not sure how this place have a really high rating? I think the different taste buds between Asians and Caucasians are extremely different. Reading through the reviews, I’m noticing that the bad reviews are from Asians and the good is from all other. Growing up in an ethnic household, I’ve had the best of home made cooking and also experience at a Global Perspective, Chinese, Vietnamese and Japanese Food. This place claims to be the best of both worlds. WRONG. Their Shumai’s taste it like it just came out the microwave from H-Mart and their vegetables tasted like it was expired and rotten. Their fried rice was okay, bland, not worth the $ 15 dollars. Their customer service was great, but that was about it. Not recommended for those who have had real Asian food.

Don’t let all the 4 and 5 star reviews fool you. Sugar cane is just run of the mill mediocre Chinese food. First off, the soups are terrible. On top of that the main dishes really leave something to be desired. I’ve had a couple of the chicken dishes and they always have random pieces of tough or chewy chicken. A true sign that they are not using high quality meat. The vegetables mixed in with the various dishes are often undesirable as well. I guess the bar in Peabody is not set too high, because much better Chinese food can be had just a short drive away. Mandarin in Reading puts this place to shame on every single level.
